There was a story I heard once from gentleman from Onondaga County, NY that was teaching my ICS300 class this time last year, Chris might know the story and gentleman better than I do. One night this gentleman, who was a deputy with the OCSO and also a chief of his local fire department got a call from his dispatcher telling him that an officer in his district had just called for back up and was being assaulted at a local bar, could he come in a provide back up. Obviously this person said yes, but then he told the dispatcher to dispatch his fire department to the scene and then he told the dispatcher to tell the department to use their siren the entire way from the station to the scene, as would the chief. He said he wanted his guys to sound like cops and then look intimidates with axes, haligans and roof hooks as they got near and to the scene. From what I am told, it worked and the officer recovered, however he told us this story to remind us that we are all on the same side and that you never know when you are going to need back up. We all may wear different uniforms and perform different tasks, but when in your uniform, your best friend is another person in uniform.

I stand corrected, thank you for the information.

Are these values total or just for Fire/EMS/PD? I am willing to bet that your increased taxes are more due to your local school district than your local VFD squandering your tax dollars. I am willing to bet you are more comfortable with the quality of the education your kid is getting at a suburban high school than the one they would have gotten back in Yonkers.

They forgot to add the pre-employment test on maple syrup and fall foliage as well as the mandatory requirement to like Phish.

No worries, the week after vacation can be especially difficult, especially with 10 extra pounds of turkey and all the fixen's to lug around... Here is the info you wanted. I didn't specially read anything that says a non-resident can't carry... http://www.atg.state.vt.us/issues/gun-laws.php From the NRA: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=6&ved=0CFYQFjAF&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nraila.org%2Fstatelawpdfs%2FVTSL.pdf&ei=poTVToqCBaHV0QHxnO2fAg&usg=AFQjCNH379Ug5Y1legCKkHTav7pksLF4gg&sig2=dxrIYyDZ3Vp9z118Ye5fqA And as for as the constables...I think they are more like Sheriffs here, they handle the more civic side of LE, court orders, filings, service etc... And considering how warm it is this week, it doesn't look that good for a snowy winter, regardless Killington is still open and I too hope to see you on the slopes...or maybe that long trail brewing co. they speak so highly of.

My statement was an attempt at a humorous outlook on LE in VT. Simply put VSP is a very difficult job, I am not being negative, simply pointing out some of the extreme differences between VT and the tri-state area. Unline NY, provided I am not violating any federal gun laws, one can conceal and carry. Snow falling and on the ground from September to early May. This is the first year in 4 I have not hit the ski slopes by October and for the past 3 years my last day of the season is late April. Thats ignoring the fact that I have had minimum recorded temperatures in the biggest city right on the lake of -25F not including windchill and thats not even the central portion of the state that is snowier and colder. I love this state, and as it stands the odds I will be leaving anytime soon are very small, however, as I said above, this is a very different pace of life and a very different style of living. http://news.yahoo.com/video/burlingtonwptz-18190896/shumlin-tells-cops-to-look-the-other-way-on-illegals-26629760.html The Governor has been very clear that illegal immigrants are vital for the economy and agriculture of Vermont. A l ot of people, including many officers I know do not like that aspect, but remember, the 10th Amendment protects each states rights. Unlike NYSP which operate out of 2 man cars contractually during 7pm-7am, VSP operates out of 1 man cars and is responsible for patrolling the entire state. As you pointed out, there are town and city PDs but they are stretched very thin and are not everywhere. Additionally, many will greatly reduce manning or even shut during night time hours leaving only VSP and maybe county Sheriffs as the only LE in the area. As a VSP trooper you have to be prepared for the fact that there might not be any help for upwards of 30 minutes even in well traveled areas.

If you enjoy working in a state that has the half the population of Westchester County, no gun laws minus a few fish and wildlife regulations, snow 9 months of the year, being alone on patrol in desolate ares, being tolerant and accepting of illegal immigrants and not knowing exactly when your backup is going to reach you, then this is the job for you. However, since no one city or region has many resources, VSP are the primary HAZMAT, EOD, SWAT, Dive, Technical Rescue and CSI for the vast majority of the state.

One thing I guess I am failing to consider is that I maybe be playing part in a situation similar to recouping costs for rescue services. I do a lot of backcountry skiing in the Northeastern Vermont, this usually entails leaving groomed ski area trails or the ski areas themselves. Certain ski areas where rescuing lost skiers has become a problem have posted signs around the edge of the boundary of their ski mountain so when you ski out of bounds (which you are allowed to do since almost all ski areas are on government land and leased to operators for the use of the mountain as a ski resort) you are informed 1. You are leaving an area where rescue is possible 2. You are entering a dangerous and highly technical environment 3. Any attempt to rescue you will cost a minimum amount of money (between $500-2000) I attached an example of one of these signs, I think this one is from out West. I will post a picture of what I deal with when I get on the mountain.

What about driving in a snow storm during a declared state of emergency (Whether City, County or State) should someone who crashes be charged as well? I don't know, I am just asking... And the article includes some text about FEMA also paying for improved radio communication? Any more info on that?

The article says one rig was taken out of service? Which company was shut? "With the reduced manpower, Clampet says that the White Plains Fire Bureau recently started using only eight fire apparatuses instead of nine." "Callahan says that the City never has less than eight pieces on the road, and that having eight or nine varies from season to season."

If there is one thing that I KNOW about you friend, it is that brotherhood is above all else...with that in mind, I could not agree more.

my point exactly.

I disagree completely but we are all entitled to our own opinion. Lets just hope that we don't have to attend any LODD funerals or funerals in general to show you the difference between a LODD funeral and funeral with full department honors. Happy Thanksgiving and Stay Safe.
-
Why? Because he was an integral part of the department who was its head at one point. He was their leader and they wanted to honor him for that in death in one of the few truly meaningful ways they could. I guess you wouldn't have wanted to give Reagan or Ford the funeral they got either using your logic. Does it detract from a real LODD funeral? Thats not for me to decide...but in my opinion anyone who has ever worn their Class As to a LODD funeral verse an untimely death funeral can and will know the difference between the two and what it means.

Rest In Peace LT, we have the watch. I was remarking last night in the back of the engine on the way back to quarters exactly how big, bulky and heavy my bail-out gear is, once I finished the conversation, the Black Sunday radio transmissions popped right into my head. All I could hear, all I could remember, repeating over and over again was the frantic "mayday, mayday, mayday" you hear. It really made me think exactly why I wear this thing, exactly what can go wrong and exactly what I need to do to "bail" my a** out. While it is terribly sad that he has passed, I take some measure of solace in the fact that these firefighters are saving firefighter lives across the country for years, decades and generations to come.
