Has anyone had dealings with the "Super Glove"? It seems to be a main competitor of the Pro-tech 8 gloves and there's a fair bit of rivalry between the two.

There's an interesting article at http://wasteage.com/Waste_Safety/waste_playing_safe/, somewhat brought about by John Paul Rodrigues who fell off a Village of Ossining truck July 2005 and died from head injuries. The family were quite vocal about improving safety for these workers and initially sued the village. The family later withdrew the lawsuit when the village agreed to work on safety and hired a Village Safety Officer and looked to consider safety helpmets, and cameras on the back step. To be honest, I'm not sure what has happened recently in this respect though.

Nice quote - unfortunately, some of us here are no longer 'kids' (we might act like it, but that's a different story ), and there's very little chance for qualifications or previous experience to make any difference. Maybe when they perfect this time travel stuff, I'll know better next time around!

Hi Paratrooper, From the Canvass letters I received before, it's in the ball park. I think some were lower, some higher, although the mention of Rye at $41,290 is higher than any of the letters I previously received. As part of the canvass letter, you can send it back and decline and say you need at least $28,000 - or give another reason why you can't accept this one. Then you'll still be included on any further canvassing letters. If you do nothing, then you'll get taken off the list and wont hear of any other openings. Monty.

I think there's a NY state law (I thought it was 37), applies to PA, MTA cops as well as general municipalities. From previous posts here, it seems Connecticut doesn't have the same rules. I wish FDNY amng others didn't have age limits ... but that seems to be the way it is, and not like to change anytime soon

I received a canvas letter today from the Village of Larchmont, it says in anticipation of them making an appointment for a Fire Fighter position at a salary of $27,993. Responses to the canvas letter have to be received by December 12, 2007.

This seems to highlight the need for, and to know and follow Mayday procedures. Unfortunately, I know my department is severely lacking in this area.

It's been a while since I operated with a TL, but I believe our SOP was to wear a ladder belt, although I can't say that we all used it, all the time we were in the bucket. I hope FF Smith recovers fully in a very short amount of time.

I don't need it - but would be interested. Is it feasible to offer it over a weekend? Or a couple of weekends? As it's a 24 hour class, 7-11pm seems to be about the norm (personally I have difficulty with classes before 7pm, especially if it's a series) - so that's 6 nights of class. Maybe the problem is that they're evening classes and they're aimed at Senior Leadership - and they have all those other events they're committed to ..... Unlikely, but maybe some agencies are saying we don't get any grants, we'll never use NIMS, so why bother? Or they're just applying for grants and ignoring the fact they're not trained / certified.

It's good to see people being honest here - as some have said, an incident like the recent one will start to change people's minds. My department says it has a policy but there's no support from the top to enforce it. Personally I've almost made a crusade out of highlighting LODD's. I am seeing more people in my company wearing them, although it happens less when they are en-route to a call. I like the concept of Phoenix - another benefit I hear of is that it makes it easier for everyone to do a sizeup before they go to work.

Not sure what this says about society. I don't know if there are any EMS agencies in the US issuing stab vests / body armor as part of the standard equipment.

I didn't see the show, but from what I gather here, everything was good until they implied there was alcohol. Some sort of uniformity is good. Being out on the fire truck - fine. Dressed ready to respond - great. Drinking, while appearing to be 'on duty' - bad!

Looks like something out of a Chevy Chase movie or something Regarding the real topic at hand, my guess is that maybe they were scared. What if the 6 month trial turned out be a great success - then what??? Try and find money for it - more contract negotiations - more staffing. Maybe I'm just too much of a pessimist today .....

Apart form the interesting opinions and posting of interesting bits and pieces - I've been able to attend several training seminars / course that I probably wouldn't have heard about. It's also given me the chance to apply for a couple of jobs - not that they've gone anywhere to date. It's also let me vent once in a while too!

Just seen an announcement on the DES Website for the National FF1 and FF2 examination. I'm sure that this wont be for just Westchester residents. When I signed up for ti 2 years ago, there was not enough interest and it was cancelled. I'll be signing up for FF 2 this year. Hopefully there will be enough interest this year to run the two exams.
-
So, I guess I'm not too surprised - they've decided to cancel the FF1 & FF2 exams at Westchester for low enrollment. Although, I thought they might wait a few more weeks. If anyone knows of anywhere offering FF2 please let me know - other than Montour Falls. I guess I may just have to eat the 8+ hours travel for the 6 hour experience

My thoughts and prayers to all involved, especially to the driver who I am sure is going through hell at the moment.

Hello, I was curious if anyone had used a manifold / portable hydrant at a real job? I can see some potential benefits of such a device but I was really looking to see if anyone had actually used it for real. Or is this one of those specialty pieces that gets used once in a hundred years? Thanks.

Thanks, this gives me some good ideas for drilling - ironically one of the best uses seems to be tanker ops - but we don't have a tanker and we don't do mutual aid

Well, maybe the only chance I get to show off for a while. 3 points lower than 4 years ago - but I still ended up with 95% this time. I literally applied last minute - mailed it on the Sunday before the deadline for the postmark. Probably lost a few places in that so I'm ranked 15th. Realistically though, I don't see me getting on any department for a while - I'll need to win the lottery to live off the starting pay from a Westchester Dept, given my current family & financial situation ......
-
No, Yes, Good question - I don't know. We are strongly encouraged to take medicals, but nothing happens if you don't. The department has several hundred 'active' members - less than a hundred take the physical. My old dept upstate would take you 'offline' if you did not have your annual physical and other mandatory items (mainly OSHA refresher and infectious diseases refresher). Being offline, still meant that life active members were active (reflecting their previous service), however they couldn't attend a fire scene or do any training other than that required to be back 'online'.

RIP Brothers. Thoughts and prayers to all of those touched by this tragedy.

Also, using voip may impact the features of E-911. I have an internet phone company, I registered my address but I know the call does not go through to my local 911 answering center - I believe it goes to the NYSP. For this case, I bet most students were using cell phones and don't have a land line. As for the case, it sounds like the dispatchers did their job - and the supervisors are standing by them. Job well done.
