Pretty much across the board the answer is no. This question was discussed after the Tsunami in 2006. A Cat 5 hurricane would be bad enough for the tri state area.

Would would hope the ship's brigade wouild be able to supress a fire cause I don't see alot of assests coming to their aid in some of these ports.

I like how the article quotes a DC Fire Department spokesman. Niether airport is in DC (both are in Virginia, Arlinton Cty and Fairfax County respectfully) nor covered by the DC Fire Department (ARFF ia provided by the Metro Washington Airports Authority).

What ever works for the local teams. I've been a tactical paramedic since 1990 for both a multi jurisdictional county team and a unit within the State Police. We train with both teams on a regular basis and dress in the same fashion as the team, with level III armor. Both teams are unarmed as far as the medics go. Nevertheless with are very familar with all the weapons, basicall to render them safe should an officer go down. We do shoot at the range and I as well as the medics all feel alittle odd when we shot better then the armed weapons. Like I said it all depends on what works for the local departments.

I suspect you are affilated with an EMS organization that is try to install a line officer with no medical training. If that is the case, run away, runaway and don't look back. If an organization is numb enough to try to do this I can only image other wackey ideas thy have. I question there professionalism if they want this to fly. It would be like macking a physician in charge who had never gone to medical school, a nurse without nursing school, a fire chief who never graduated Firefighter 1.

If I'm thinking of the same vehicle the scene support truck (Big box truck with a tailift assembly?) carries a number of tent shelters, HVAC and generators provided by a company called Western Shelter. This same company provides tents for the Federal USAR teams, DMATs, and FEMA as a whole. Its the same system we use in NJ. If this is the same truck you will not see it on the road everyday. These tents are usually used for the BIG ONE. A building collapse, mass pandemic or hospital failure, large scale flooding, etc.

Here in NJ what have several special resources obtained thru our UASI group. The Regional Catastrophic Planning Group is a separate has a much wider view and includes NYC, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Pike County, PA, and several counties in Conn hugging the NYS line. They do more planning then money providing. One of the projects in a evacuation of NYC, hence Pike County, PA (Rt 80). The NJ UASI has provided seven counties in NJ with specialized resources for police, fire, EMS, public health, haz mat, and hospitals. This includes the formation of rapid deployment forces for each county, SWAT vehicles, and specialized training for law enforcement; the fire service has several career departments that are equipped with large rescue trucks as part of the Metro USAR Strike Force, foam tenders, 12 inch hose and Neptune pumping systems, fire boats for Jersey City, Newark, and Perth Amboy, and training. For EMS they have provided seven Mass Casualty Response Units, staging trailers, MCI trailers, ASAP mini ambulances, logistics units, and planners for certain regions. We are currently having 9 medical ambulance buses built for the region. All these resources are used on every day events. Even though the resources are known about there are several departments that will not call for them, thinking they can do everything on their own or be put into the position of having to call for help.

There are at least two fundamental requirements for emergency services, get there fast and be competent. If you can't do either one I have no problem calling them on it but you better make sure your own house is in order.

If you live close to NJ you can try some of the bigger operations such as Jersey City Medical Center EMS, University Hospital EMS, Robert Wood Johnson EMS, MONOC, Hackensack Medical Center Paramedics. You would have apply, get hired and then the department would work with NY and NJ to get yout NJ medic cert.

I've been to six church fires in my career in once it gets into the main body of the building its time to break out the hot dog winies because that is pretty much all you can do, plus some exposure protection. All of them ended looking like that You Tube video.

I've said it before and I'll say it again....don't expect OSHA (or a State OSHA) to come in like a knight to strike fear in the hearts of fire chiefs or local governments. $5000 for two guys, please. Chump change to a City like Bridgeport.

This is a local issue. My town has career PD, FD, and EMS. Police do not respond to EMS incidents unless there is a shooting, stabbing, or domestic violence. FD responds to MVAs with injuries, cardiac arrests, if EMS is delayed, and to all EMS requests in a certain area of town because if it's remote distance and highway delays. And of course EMS responds to everything. EMS will usually respond by themselves to life assists. EMS will call additional resources as needed.

It would appear from what I read and seen over the last several months that cab seats with the SCBA mounted in the backrest are falling out of favor. Believe me if the new style of SCBA catches on the apparatus and equipment manufactures will develope of new storage system just to secure that corner of the market, would doubt they already have something cooked up.

Funny how the same law enforcement agencies that worry about keeping the traffic flowing have no problem closed down a road for hours doing an AI. Recently one highway was shut down near me for 6 (yes thats Six) hours for an AI. I mean what are you doing scrapping the blacktop for DNA? I'm not a LEO so I could care less how many hours the road is shutdown but lets all get on board with the same program and play well in the sandbox together.

General answer to your question: You might be the best EMT in thw world, you might even know more then your instructors but remember it is the FDNY EMS Academt so keep your mouth shut. Don't even mention that you are an EMT. Stay low, do not given people a reason to single you out. Nowadays I see alot of new EMTs comeon the job and they want swift acceptance andtreated like a 20 year veteran. Screw that, buy your time like every one elses does.

343 reflects the number of FDNY employees that were killed, not just firefighters. This includes the two paramedics, Father Judge, FM Ron Bucca, and First Deputy Commissioner William M. Feehan, who I think is technical a civilain position. Keith Roma was employeed by the NY Board of Fire Underwriters. I tend to think if people had clearer thoughts in the days after the WTC they would have included him. There are plenty of FDNY Firefighters who would disgustingly argue that the medics should not be counted but it is hard to make the arguement but keep Father Judge included in the 343.

I know several guys who work in Camden and basically Camden should just fold its door. The City can barely provide essential services, half the PD was laid off along with 30% of the firefighting resources. The closed two libraries and gave the third to the County. Not even the Battle Ship New Jersey could say the City. The Garden Staten Acquarium nor a concert venue can bring enough people in. The lost the distinction as the most dengerous city in the US to St Louis last year, I guess they will win back that distinction this year. Many of elected position have been jailed on official misconduct or corruption over the last several years. The PD layoffs effected guys with 13 years on the job.

I read this once and realized I would have to sit down again and really pay attention. Somewhere there has to be a happy medium between securing the scene and SECURING THE SCENE. No one from the public is going to be able to rationalize why emergency responders (EMS and Fire) are going to stage away from the scene. Hindsight being 20/20 the scene was secured before the first 9-1-1 call was placed with the civilians tackled the nut job and secured the weapon. I've never heard EMS crews held back with Law enforcement searched for a second gunman. I don't know the point of the article. Was anyone complaining about an ambulance delay? The article seems to discount any allegations about scene mismangement. I suspect if this happened in my area our Comm Center would have heard the police radio traffic indicated multiple victims and would have begun sending additional resources. Clue in the responders it sounded like an MCI. Seems like a lot to do about nothing. Although there seemed to be enough ambulance plus the helicopters used when the trauma center apparently was only 10-15 minutes ground time away.

Photos taken by the local media outlet of flashover conditions in a second story apartment over a commerical outlet. Firefighter Jason Fazio of the Asbury Park Fire Departmnt , seriously burned in a midmorning fire on Main Street, was in critical condition at the St. Barnabas Burn Center in Livingston Monday afternoon. Firefighter Fazio was caught in the flashover and dove out the second floor. http://www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/gallery?Avis=B3&Dato=20110110&Kategori=MULTIMEDIA02&Lopenr=101100801&Ref=PH
