The lines were very long today, over an hour wait to board the ships. My friend and I went on the intrepid and we were able to see at least the Kearsage better there, then from anywhere else. Many of the other ships were in SI im assuming.

I was thinking like how there was a stand down day for highway safety maybe some program could come and discuss miscalenous hazards.. just a thought.

There has to be a better way to alert people to air conditioners in windows. Something that grabs your attention from the lower ground floor or maybe a sign needs to be invented. From all the training ive taken A/C units are mentioned but I dont believe anywhere near enough. Just seems with everything going on in an emergency scene an A/c unit is the last on your mind. Maybe the fire service as a whole should push to increase awarness to hazards like these...

Izzy is correct with his info. We are all certified to the same basic level some even with more specialiazed training just like career FFD members. If there is a need the two units can be placed "in service" at any time day or night, ie for working fire/ natural disaster. When we are in service usually nights, both units respond along with Fairfield FD apparatus under FFD command 95% of the time. There are occasions where vol. units take command of scenes and situations as needed. I can speak on Stratfields behalf since I am a member and for the most part there is a strong working relationship with the Stratfield FD and Fairfield FD. Southport I am sure is probably along the same lines. Also just to clarify the above, there is usually no home response unless the units are out of service due to lack of crew or daytime. When they are in service nights, the units are staffed for a said time period and the crew stays at the station until that time is up, much like vol. ems crews in the area, how they work a "shift" or have an on call crew.

I use that same radioshack scanner antenna for my home and car scanners. In my car i have it under the bedrail so it doesnt stick up, and it still works like a charm.

Used them many a time, the stacked tips really give a nice wallop. Very easy to control and set up. Allthough i dont think they outfit them with a dual 2.5 inch inlet, that i think is the only drawback. Where as a portable deckgun persay usually has the siamese.

You have to remember too the capabilities of the responding depts don't match what a Arff dept can do in these types of situations, we merely support their activities and aid as best we can. Plus if you think about it what is the chances of a plane emergency landing at the airport? We've seen in the past year that a true crash has a better chance occurinig outside the grounds. And if they're any farthur away they can land elsewhere im assuming(im not a pilot) We get notified if they're 15 miles out if something is wrong if were lucky, then what? We have a 10 min travel time at least, we cant compare to a plane who is going to touchdown, who is covering that distance doing 90-150 mph....Even if we had shorter distance to travel. A full time FD there would def. help, but is it logistically feesible? The county gov't has that to decide. It is great to see however that we are trying to work out the best plan possible given what circumstances we are now delt. Nothing wrong with trying to improve in my book.

I know it is supposed to warn people behind to leave the rig enough room in case they have to make a sudden stop or perhaps make numerous stops looking for streets, fire hydrants or house addresses. Obviously the signs don't work. You still get the jerks who follow behind because they can now go around the traffic just as fast as you can.

After coming by today I can only say I wish I had more time to spend there. I can not wait to see the look on their faces when they get back. Just knowing you were a very small part of those smiles will be worth all the money in the world. I wish them the best with this new house, just wish i could be there for some more.
