Speaking on "Suburban Firefighting," Chief Jim Silvernail of the City of Kirkwood, Missouri Fire Dept, captivated the audience of approximately 400 firefighters, at yesterday's 17th Annual Lt. Andy Fredericks. Our thanks to all those firefighters who attended and especially those who regularly support our seminar, as well as Chief Silvernail for a great presentation. Proceeds of each seminar are given to four designated charities: the Lt. Andy Fredericks Scholarship Fund, the Lt. Tyler Rush Scholarship Fund, the New York State Firemen's Home and Burncare Everywhere. Andy's company, FDNY Squad Co. 18, was on hand, as always, to sell T-shirts and support the cause. Also in attendance was FDNY Battalion 19, Engine Co. 75 and Ladder Co. 33 to sell memorial T-shirts for Deputy Chief Michael Fahy, recently killed in the line of duty; proceeds going to Chief Fahy's family. Elmsford FD designations: Dept = 211 2110 = Deputy Chief 2111 = Chief 2112 = 1st Asst. Chief 2113 = 2nd Asst. Chief 2114 = Captain, Ladder Co. 2115 = Captain, Engine Co. 2116 = 1st. Lieut, Ladder Co. 2117 = 1st. Lieut, Engine Co. 2118 = 2nd. Lieut, Ladder Co. 2119 = 2nd. Lieut, Engine Co. 58-12 = EMS Lieut, Ladder Co. 58-13 = EMS Lieut, Engine Co.

Elmsford PD is our primary dispatch. 60-Control is our secondary dispatch. The PD desk officer sounds the recall "3" which really isn't used as often as it was in the past. Recall "3" on the horn indicates that the incident is complete and all units are back in service. Obviously a throw back to the pre-radio days. The chief could open a box and use the morse key to sound it. Tarrytown did operate in the same manner. I'm not sure if they still do.

While no longer having actual pull boxes, Tarrytown and Elmsford still use audible signal codes (box numbers) for intersections and some specific locations like schools, hotels, etc. Elmsford does have two working pull boxes, one on each of our two firehouses. One audible round of 3 indicates that the call is complete and units are back in service.
