    Thanks for posting this Seth.
As I sit here reading this post there is a lot going through my head, but there is one point that stands out in the forefront. Here we have a firefighter who gave us a life lesson or a "it happened to me" lesson. A firsthand account of what happened to him and there are only two comments and 272 views of this thread. Yet we have a three minute video clip posted to the forums less than a day prior that has 20 comments and 1,069 views that may look bad, but is full of "power-hour", "save-the-fire service" Monday morning quarterbacking.
I'm disheartened to see that the fire service hasn't changed in numerous aspects. We hate it when the media, press and the public grab a hold of a short clip of a larger incident and lambaste us, but yet we still do it to ourselves day in and day out. Whether it's at our coffee table or through the keyboard warrior society, we continue to do it. That 3 minute clip may very well paint the whole picture, but unless your boots were on the ground you don't know that. Here, firefighter Dorner told us his story, from his boots. Learn from him and his crew, leave the criticism to the media. If that video really does portray the entire incident, save your time on the forums. Go find a member of the department, ask them what happened and why they did what they did. Then give them a story like this and ask them if they're okay with their Chief knocking on their wife's door.
Be the change you want, if it falls on deaf ears then you can go to bed at night knowing that you did what you could to teach a lesson.

Join a VAC first and get through probation. While you're doing that you can pick up some practical experience which helps when taking the EMT-B course. Usually the VAC will then pay for the course, providing you pass.

    Hello Christopher,
It may not feel like it now, because we all know that you are hurting and in pain, but guess what? You actually have a great advantage over other kids your age! You will grow up to be a stronger person, and it will help you as you pursue your goal of being a firefighter! Yes that's right.
You see, when you are tested like this, it builds courage and strength that few other people possess. Chris, most people don't have the advantage of being so strong in character at such a young age. We know you may not feel that way right now, and we want you to know that all of us here; the firefighters, the paramedics, the police, the emergency technicians, the dispatchers, all of us are pulling for you as you get through the tough fight you have been fighting. We also know you are going to make it! And your dreams of being a firefighter can come true in one way or another.
Guys like you are a shining example of what a good firefighter is made of. Guys like you never cease to amaze me.
    Strength.
    Honor.
    Duty.
All of these qualities you already possess, and we support you and your goals when you get through what you have to do.
Stay strong Christopher as you get through this difficult time. I really look forward to hearing how things are going for you. You're going to be just fine buddy.
    Respectfully yours,
    Captain George Glover (retired)

Don't try too hard to follow his logic. First off, it's difficult for anyone who appreciates the rules of grammar and literacy, and second off, it's all plagiarized. So basically, all of his "thoughts" are stolen. That makes him a thief. There no lower creature in academia than he who passes off others work as his own. I just picked three random sentences in that post, and they are all, verbatim, off the internet.

If anyone wants to have an honest discussion about the pros and cons of organized labor, please step up, but if all you can do is steal others thoughts and pass them off as your own, your making yourself look like a fool.
(Besides, doesn't plagiarism violate forum rules? If not, it should.)

Walkers recall election has nothing to do with unions and the private sector, which is the topic of your thread.

OK everyone, the original post was whether FDNY can ride for free, which has been more than sufficiently answered by more than one person. It wasn't a thread to compare EMT qualifications, length of time as one, et al. Let's all put the rulers away - it's short, shriveled, and hangs to the left anyway.

FD/PD/EMS Ride NYC transit for free while on duty and in uniform. PD is officially extended this courtesy while riding Metro-North under the guise that they'll provide assistance in the event of an emergency. That's it, end of discussion. Any other talk of professional courtesy is not for a public forum, it doesn't read well to the uninformed general public. I for one always carry a ticket with me on Metro-North.

I honestly don't even understand why we are discussing this topic. I didn't join the fire service to get a "free ride" anywhere and I sure as hell hope that others don't either. But we all know that somewhere down the line someone will be nice enough to not take no thanks as an answer, when that happens x129K said it best.

My apologies if this has been posted before but I just came across it today on one of the fire service blogs I read daily, Excessive Leather Accessories for Firefighters;http://elaffhq.com/. The video was also posted on STATer911.com While this video can be portrayed in a few different ways, I'm posting it for a laugh.

The Video shows a volunteer member from Long Island running from his vehicle to the station to get on the engine. Enjoy!

In an effort to turn a very sad tragic situation into something positive, Fairview Firefighters in cooperation with other agencies are conducting a door to door visitation to homes in neighborhoods near the location of this fire. Their message is to promote fire safety and give smoke detectors to homes that are in need of them. It is unbelievable that in this day of smart phones, etc. that some residents are still lacking such basic life saving devices as a properly located, functioning smoke detector and or CO detector. Kudos to them!
