WPFD does not normally respond to EMS calls. In the event WP's EMS provider, Transcare, is tied up, the FD will respond and provide care until an ambulance arrives. WP has 3 ambulances in the city that run out of Station 2.

WPFD does not overlap tours (cops work shifts, FF's work tours LOL) Like stated in earlier posts, "minimum" staffing is 26 men per tour, in the event there is 27 or 28 men working,they will put a 4th man on the Trucks or Rescue - DC's call. If manpower is 29, then L34 will be put in service. Manpower changes all the time depending on vacations, comp time, sick leave, line of duty injury, or personal time.

WPFD currently runs with 8 companies - (5) Engines Companies - 65,66,67,70,71. (2) Truck Companies - 32 is a Stick and Tower Ladder 6. (1) Rescue Company 88. Ladder 34 (the 9th Company) is BROWNED out due to budget cuts. WPFD went from 170 men to 150 men when the economy went south. L34 is staffed when the manpower allows. WPFD rides with 3 men per company, when manpower allows they put a 4th man L32, TL6, and R88. Current staffing is: 8 Companies x 3 per Co.= 24 men + Car 2512 (which is the Deputy Chief and the Aide) 2 men= 26 men per tour. (If/when L34 is in service that would add 3 men to the total, it would be 29) I LOVE HOW ALL THE EXPERTS CAN COMMENT ON THINGS THEY HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT!!!!

WHERE IS THE BRASS FROM THE THE CAREER FIRE DEPTS AND UNION REPS FROM THOSE SAME JOBS. COPS AND VOLLIES WHERE WELL REPRESENTED BUT NOT THE PAID JOBS, LAST TIME I CHECKED WE WHERE THE ONES TRAINING WITH FDNY, WE WOULD BE THE ONES RESPONDING INTO NYC MANNING THE FIRE HOUSES, AND WE WOULD BE THE ONES HANDLING HAZ MAT SITUATIONS IN OUR OWN CITIES.

Like everything else in our line of work it comes down to two important issues, manpower and funding. While some feel this in not the case let me ashore you those two components go hand and hand, not just for a terrorist threat or attack but for the the firefighters and cops who perform their job 24/7/365.

WPFD runs with a minimum of 3 per company and a max of 4. For a report of a fire we send,the DC (car 2512) 3 engines 1 truck and the rescue, the DC will usually call for an additional engine to come in as FAST while responding if its a confirmed fire. Once on scene and depending on situation a 2nd alarm would be 1 and 1 with the 3rd truck we have (if in service) relocating to HQ or the scene, we are done after that and mutual aid is called to cover the city. .

The population is about 60,000 BUT during the the day it jumps to about 250,000 and now that WP is a 24 hour city with BOOMING night life that 60,000 really isn't 60,000 anymore. WP is 10 sq miles. WPFD has 9 companies- 5 engines, 3 trucks, and a rescue. The only time WPFD runs ems is if all the bus' are tied up, occasionally they respond on an assist.

And yes we are a FIRE DEPARTMENT. Even at 169 it's not enough, the dynamics of the city has changed and the manpower has decreased.

Th company placed OOS is Ladder 34 out of station 7 in the south end of the city. Rescue is manned 24/7/365, it was browned out after the layoffs in May of 2010, for a short time due to manpower issues.
