Today I received a letter from the NYSDMV and inside was a new and improved NY State driver's license. This struck me as odd because my current license had not expired yet. I further read the letter enclosed and it stated that NY State issued new licenses that looked slightly different than the original licenses to all drivers under the age of 25. NY State's reasoning behind this change was to crack down on underage drinking and the creation of false identification. They referred to it as "Operation Prevent." Do you think it will work? Has anyone else under 25 received a new license?

I agree with the article. Firefighting is not a sexy job, however the PEOPLE performing the job may be "sexy." It seems that today's society has confused a "sexy" job with WHO performs the job as being "sexy." Firefighting is a life-threatening job at times, but can also be very heroic. One may also perceive heroic as "sexy." Hollywood also pumps up the image of firefighters with movies such as "Backdraft," "Ladder 49, etc. If all plumbers had physiques of bodybuilders, then that job would most likely be perceived as "sexy" too.

Has anyone participated or is familiar with the Firefighter Combat Challenge? I've seen it on ESPN a couple of times but don't know of anyone in the New York metropolitan/Westchester area who has participated. Any info? Here's the link: http://new.firefighterchallenge.com/index.htm

it appears that towns and villages with volunteer departments are less likely than cities with career departments to use horns and/or sirens. the fact that even during a parade an apparatus would be pulled from a parade to respond to a call may influence the use or non use of sirens and horns seems reasonable. if in this event, wouldn't it be sensible for the mc or grand marshall of the parade to make an announcement or have police direct or halt the parade briefly for an apparatus to exit in the event of a call? there are always police blocking off road ways or participating in parades to assist in this. the convenience of career departments is that they can have off-duty members and apparatus participate in parades while all other stations are adequately manned and still has enough apparatus for any response. parades are supposed to be fun and entertaining for children of all ages. i highly doubt that anyone who hears a siren or horn in a parade would automatically think they are responding to a call. even with sirens and horns, it's not like they are on throughout the entire duration of the parade. every few minutes, a rig would beep out a little siren wail or horn. never constantly.

my best friend lives in Bethel, CT and I frequently visit. I always see state trooper cars up there and the appearance of the cars is very nonchalant, almost incognito. there are no indications that the vehicle is a state trooper car other than a small sign in the middle of the light bar with "state trooper" inscribed on it along with tiny single blue and red lights at opposing ends of the light bar during highway cruising. it is as if the state took a bone stock police interceptor fresh off the lot in a non threatening color and threw a light bar on top and no vehicle stickers. being from NY, I am accustomed to the dark blue and yellow striping on state trooper vehicles. especially the Camaros!

I was just wondering what the FDNY work schedule was like. White Plains is 3 days on, 2 off, 3 on, 4 off. I was wondering if FDNY's is similar in any way
-
White Plains works like this: You work three consecutive 10 hour morning days from around 8am to around 6pm Then you have 2 consecutive days off You work three consecutive 14 hour night shifts from 6pm to 8am Then you have 4 consecutive days off Then the cycyle repeats itself thereafter
