WHAT DID YOU SAY?!

I forgot to mention that it was a BLS run so our ALS run was already clear. Our PD really can't be running to the ER for that - only 2 cars on duty. I took into consideration the ADA, and as a matter of safety for all of us on the rig I made the decision that I did. I don't beleive an ambulance falls under public transportation, simply because it is an emergency vehicle. Any law dogs out there that can shed some light here? As for 2051, he was working babe, I was on vacation.

That's just plain stupid.

It takes many, many months to get test results. If memory serves, if you score above a certain point you get called to do the agility test. From there I have no idea what happens, never been there...

HQ is where E247, E245 (soon to be a Ladder), MA10 & R36 currently cram in to, right? From what I can tell it is very, VERY tight, and I can only imagine it will be tougher with the addition of a Ladder Truck. I haven't been to Millwood HQ in about a year, but I can tell you this. When we were walking around and checking the place out, the floor seemed to be sagging on the 2nd floor. This is unacceptable for ANY PUBLIC OR PRIVATE BUILDING! We also noticed that the overall condition of the building is fairly deteriorated, and I can honestly say that it is time for a new Millwood FD HQ. Based on the sizes of some firehouses around, 19,000 sq. ft. really doesn't seem that excessive. Knowing the Millwood guys fairly well, I highly doubt that anything they are pursuing is overkill by any means. Best of luck guys!

Found their van at the Specialty Warning Systems site:

On Tuesday 5/29 the CFD Fire Council approved to make this happen. At the Village Board meeting on 6/4, they acknowledged the Fire Department's proposal and will begin all the "paperwork." I haven't heard a set date to start, but I do know applications for membership are now available.

My thoughts on this are like most of yours. But here is one I haven't seen mentioned. Would any of you consider "hanging from the sill" then dropping to the ground had there been no ladder there? Unless I am missing something, it looks to be a 2nd floor window, so the window sill would roughly be 10 - 15 feet from the ground, figure the average height from your hands at the sill to your feet is abour 6' - you'd only be "falling" about 4-11 feet. Thoughts? Glad to see they got outta there - and even happier knowing that the ladder escape was an option, too often at fire scenes the ground ladders aren't thrown nearly as much as they should be.

Nice post Stat! But you left out the whole "answer calls" thing. Cutting grass and doing yard work is not the role of the FD. If I lived in a town where the career FD was out all day doing landscaping I would be pissed. There are far too many responsiblities that need to be handled, that is why you pay them! Inspections, alarm responses, rig upkeep, etc. etc. If you're that worried about the bushes and grass then go to the High School, tell the kids that there is "a great community service oppurtunity" for them if they cut the City grass. It's free labor to get your stuff done PLUS it will help keep kids out of trouble and even improve their college resumes. I think, and of course I am only kidding, that if EMS really wants to "piety" then they should put a few weed whackers and lawn mowers in their "bus" and help the city out....

If he's so great, how come Peter Griffin "out-did" him?! I don't care for most of those in Hollywood and movieland. But I do enjoy watching things to try and see them thru others' eyes. Ain't nothing wrong with a little awareness, even if you can't stomach the guy making it. Heck, I don't care for Al Gore, but I did like watching his stuff on global warming.

We recently received a "Wisconsin born" apparatus which came in at a price of around $480K. Bells and whistles? Not really. To be honest, nothing on the rig was put there without good consideration. I will make this comment - I'm not a huge fan of the FRC gauges, the flowmeters rarely seem to work / work right. That's an item I could live without in the end. What we got was a rig with all stainless construction that should last us almost 30 years. It has a Waterous 1500 gpm pump, 750 gallon tank, 10KW hydraulic generator, 4000 watts of floodlights and a hydraulic ladder rack. Other then that, nothing spectacular. The rig is solid, dependable and most importantly, perfect for our needs. Personally I can't believe how much this stuff costs - I know of an ambulance being bought for over $160K!!! I think it is getting to a point that between the NFPA recommendations, DOT compliances and materials costs it won't be long until a simple pumper/engine is going to cost $500K with almost nothing on it.

Nice photos Tim! Is it me or does that Pirsch have a striking resemblance to Maxim rigs? Either way it's nice looking.

$15 in an SUV?! What's the point? If I was that guy I would of made her fill my tank then buy me a snack and a soft drink...

On confirmation of a working fire in our non-hydrant area we generally will do the following. 1st Engine for suppression. 2nd Engine for relaying (usually a long stretch) and if not needed for this, it will draft from the portable ponds. 3rd Engine to draft from portable ponds or to establish a fill site, depending on the need. 4th Engine (if needed) to create a fill site if the other three are already being used. A total of four tankers on the assignment, more if needed. The last fire we had where we had no hydrants was an abandoned mansion that was close to 1000 feet up a hill. 1st arriving laid up the hill about 1/3 of the way up, 2nd Engine finished the lay and relayed to the first. The 3rd Engine drafted from the portable ponds, and a 4th (Mutual Aid) Engine established a fill site. A total of 6 tankers were shuttling water for several hours.

Local Cops are hit or miss and so are State Troopers. I think LEOs from either SP or Local PDs are all humans (except the K-9s) and have days when they're crabby and days when they aren't. I would think that their profession, just like any other, has the usual problems like poor management, etc. that in some places is worst then others. A crappy boss makes the rest of those working that job miserable. Knowing those I do in various PD agencies, I can tell who STILL likes going to work everyday and who those are that would rather not.

Best....comment.......ever. I love you Partyrock!!!!!!

We've discussed this often in our FD. The answer we have come up with is this - no two incidents are the same. HOWEVER, no matter who the person is should hold no weight and make no influence in the decision. If Joe FF does something wrong and Johnny Do-Good makes the same mistake, we should be fair with the punishments of both. We use a disciplinary form which helps guide Company Officers with each situation to avoid missing things. Is it perfect - no. Is anything? I don't believe so. The hardest thing in our end of the world (volly-land) is that we generally are friends with our peers (or related to them in many cases) and having to change the "friend" hat to the "officer" hat is tough. I had to suspend one of my best friends when I was Captain. What he did was something I had done in the past, but since it was a concrete rule NOW and it was violated after both a written and verbal reprimand, I had no choice. I gave the most minor suspension I could and hated doing it. But I chose to be an Officer, and as an Officer we have to lead. I strongly encourage anyone thinking of being an Officer or already one to take the Intro to Fire Officer and Fire Officer I courses at least. I learned a lot about personnel management in these courses, and am sure others have too.
