  1. Today, June 22nd, marks 10 Years since that horrible day. Your death was not in vain, Uncle Mike. We still remember and we still miss you! RIP "Satch 585"
  2. Thank you Seth and everyone else for your support and kind words!!! I took the job here because I was tired of working crap jobs and wanted something with a pension and benefits. I AM GLAD I DID IT! I have been at 60 Control for over 5 years and have enjoyed it abot 97% of the time. (The other 3% I'll leave out). The people here are great to work with and together we all do our best for the County. On the subject of retirement, here is a link to a petition to Governor Spitzer to offer 911 Dispatchers a 25 year retirement instead of our current 30 year one. http://webmail2k3/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?UR...ispatchers.html Thanks everyone, it's nice to hear an "atta-boy" once in a while! -642K
  3. The agencies we dispatch thru 60 Control are notified when they call enroute to an ER if that ER is closed or on diversion. At home, where we get dispatched by PD, we sometimes are told that the destination we're heading to is on diversion, however most of the time they don't say a thing and we get to the ER only to be bitched at.
  4. Don't you mean "642?" I think all of my colleages do a great job. The FNGs (655 & 656) are transitioning well and can work for me any time! RWC - how much did 656 pay you? For double that will you write my resume?
  5. The WMC made me SHARE A BED with someone having an asthma attack on a nebulizer while I was on oxygen myself! GREAT HOSPITAL! They also put me into hyperbarics not for my own condition but to promote their "new" hyperbaric unit. Just look in the Journal News (or whatever it was called) around 12/29/99. Me and my buddy were barely into the damn things and their photographer was setting up a tripod!
  6. I hate people. Period. End of story. But I still help them, because I know deep down inside that everyone appreciates us and wants to shower us with praise, gifts and tons of money. It's one of those "deep, DEEP down" feelings that people seem to have a hard time finding. I'll hang in there to see it, should be worth the wait. [/sarcasm] I love being a member of my FD, even though many, MANY times when I go on either a fire or EMS call, people call us names, tell us we're pretend firefighters, etc., etc., etc. It's the nice people that say thanks periodically that make it worth it.
  7. I'm of the "two pumps to any fire" mentality myself. Whether a car fire, brush, etc. I would feel better knowing two pieces with pumps and a booster tank were coming for the simple reason that "crap happens." I'd hate to see that engine pull up, stretch a line then the pump fails. PLUS - I would rather see two rigs with crews show up then one rig and a butt-load of POVs getting in the way.
  8. Why should the fire service or even the law enforcement community go out of it's way to try and recruit people of minority groups?! I don't see any benefit from this. If someone wants to pursue this career path they will. More taxpayer money is pissed away recruiting people who OBVIOUSLY have no real desire to do the job. If they did they wouldn't sit on their a** and wait for it to come to them. If you want to find good, solid people to take the test - advertise it but don't target it towards certain groups. People will hear about it and go for it IF THEY WANT IT! In Vollyland where I hail from, I don't care who it is knocking on our doors to join. If they have some common sense, a willingness to train and be open-minded with a dash of energy, WELCOME ABOARD. *Applicants approval dependent upon criminal and arson background checks. This ends this Public Service Announcement.
  9. Friday, August 3rd at 7pm.
  10. Currently... Hydrant Area: 1 Engine & Rescue Tanker Area: 1 Engine, Tanker, Rescue (Rescue does traffic / lighting) Highway: 2 Engines, Tanker, Rescue (Usually the 2nd Engine is cancelled, but two are suppost to be dispatched - one from the north and another from the south). Two Engines have 1000 gallon tanks and the third a 750. It is rare that we can't put out a car fire with an engine's tank - but we're better off safe then sorry.
  11. All this talk of carrying off-duty I thought you guys meant sneaking donuts into your pants pockets.... I had to do it......sorry! It's a good point that Stat brings up, NYS is so afraid to distribute firearms without a tedious and prolonged process, even though we have the right to bare arms. My question to all is this - why the need to carry when off-duty? It's not a prick comment, I just am curious because my friends who are Cops seem to stray away from carrying off-duty because they don't want to "advertise" what they do. Thanks!
  12. Batt 2 - was that the new L74 I saw working the all-hands the other day? Good luck with the new Rescue, looks like a solid rig.
  13. I guess I'm not the only one with that album. I got it last year when it came out, as a loyal LP fan I figured it would be good, and it was. I just wish I didn't leave it at the firehouse where it walked....
  14. This is the best of my recollection. Best Overall - Rombout Best Regulation - Ossining Best Non-Regulation - Putnam Valley Best Engine - Buchanan Best Ladder - Ossining Best Tanker - Putnam Valley Best Rescue - Croton Best Chief's Car - Ossining Best Specialty Vehicle - Montrose VA (HM 3) Best Police Car - Westchester County PD Best Ambulance Corps - Cortlandt Best Ambulance - Pleasantville Best Firematic Color Guard - Rombout (?) Best Non-Firematic Color Guard - Cortlandt VAC AND THERE WAS NO RAIN DURING THE PARADE!!!!! It tried though!
  15. It's not in the fly-car still I hope... WREMAC replied to my e-mail. Basically, the DOH has no set protocol for this kind of thing, and they are working on it. Basically, in accordance to ADA regulations, I was in the wrong, but since it is a gray area for the most part, I can keep being an EMT another day.... (yay?!)
  16. I'm with you Tommy, I like resting my leg against the LDH to feel it out. Most of our MPOs do the same thing, which was one of the reasons we didn't get a top-mount. We spec'd our engine out to accept 5" on all four sides. The front suction and two side intakes are 6" piping which we have setup for 5" connections. The rear is a 3 1/2" pipe with a 5" stortz which also reduces to a 2 1/2" in the event we have a feed of 2 1/2" or 3". (Rare, but we didn't want to run around the rig for adapters.) Our theory was simple, even though the majority of our 5" hook-up come to the driver's side, we didn't want to be limited to where we could get it from. We live in a district that is 1/2 hydrants and 1/2 tanker ops. We sometimes run into situations where we must get our water in from the passenger side or rear. Good topic, good feedback.
  17. I appreciate all the help, and I wish I was right in this case. I think I will drop by the house this week and apologize, sighting the fact I have never had any real education on this type of situation. I was, for the record, considering that if the call went ALS, I would of put Rover in the Fly Car. But it was B(L)S and we released the Medic. And, since it wasn't a life-threatening emergency, no lights or sirens were used, per usual. I love dogs too - but I really wasn't willing to bring him along because the one EMT is REALLY allergic and started sneezing and getting teary-eyed at the house. Again, I truly appreciate the input. As soon as I get the word from WREMAC I will share it with everyone just to see what the "official" word is.
  18. Answer: Where do you test 29,300 people at once? Question: What is a VW Bus, Alex?
  19. I just want to beat this kid.... I know it's wrong, but.... Spelling Bee Winner(?)
  20. I don't think I was that skinny. Plus I never faired well at spelling bees, but I did make it to the semi-finals in a geography bee once!
  21. I sent an e-mail to DOH as well as WREMAC. I'll post my findings as soon as I get them. Thanks everyone!
  22. Soooo.........what happened? Oil change?
  23. Good stuff Rob! I know I enjoyed it!
  24. Glad to hear everyone is OK.
