  1. If FD is dispatched it is a minor alarm - Engine, Ladder, Rescue. If it is in the Tanker area it is two Engines, Tanker & Rescue. One of our more recent outside smoke investigations revealed a working house fire roughly 3 or 4 houses away from PD HQ. I don't get why FD isn't dispatched to every outside smoke - a fire can double in size EVERY MINUTE. Start 'em out and if it's nothing send 'em back.
  2. Does anyone else hear the banjos playing in the background? What a JACKASS!
  3. I was there last night myself with the family. It was very, very cool. I can only imagine how long it takes to setup the whole thing. Kudos to the people behind this amazing display!
  4. I-300 right? I'd be interested assuming I can make it. I work the same tours as the guy that posted above me.
  5. That's assuming the ambulance actually gets out, right?
  6. ....I love them guys! Same ones grabbing the Gatorade and a wet towel at a job in the hot, humid weather even though all they've done is get there!
  7. I think the point he is making is that there are firefighters, not so much Instructors (at least in Westchester) that intentionally expose themselves to excessive heat to turn their helmets into make-shift trophies. I've been all over the place and met Instructors whose whole goal was to "toast the gear." Luckily, Westchester doesn't appear to have any of these yahoos working the Training Center.
  8. The only two apparatus of ours carrying boards is the Rescue and Fire Boat. They are stored in a tranverse compartment on R18 and it is a folding board located on M12.
  9. Two words: Chuck Knoblach
  10. Bummer, does this mean you're moving back to Croton? Anyone want my place?! Good luck Fart, hope it works out for you. PS I will help you with the "speeling."
  11. Tried going last year and couldn't get tickets. Did better this year and I am going this weekend. GOOD LUCK PARKING! I drive by every night either on the way to work or to the gym and it is a madhouse! CPD has got to love the O/T it's creating though!!! I wonder if they need any field communications....hmmm.....

  13. Tom Tom, Go here: http://www.totalfiregroup.com Kore Kooler Reahb Chairs by Morning Pride Actual product info: http://www.morningpride.com/Korekooler.aspx Great Site I came across a while ago: http://www.firerehab.com/ One suggestion I'd make that I did when I was 8812 and have tried with the FD to no avail - invest in a device to monitor a firefighter's carboxyhemoglobin levels. One of the best ones I have researched is the Masimo RAD-57 unit. Here is info on the Masimo RAD-57. http://www.masimo.com/rad-57/ Remember Tom, if you need anything from me just shoot me an e-mail or call me. I have SOGs we created for the FD and I worked on for the VAC. I'm always happy to help.
  14. My gripe is the "In service" traffic. If you are RESPONDING to a call, SAY IT. To me, "In service" means that you are available once again for the next one. As for the siren going when you are on location, that doesn't irk me as often as people that respond lights and sirens to NON-EMERGENCIES. That day when your rig hits a pedestrian and kills them because you went thru a red light for a BS call is going to change your life forever - TRUST ME. Be smart.
  15. THANK YOU! Can we PLEASE LOCK THIS THREAD before it gets dumber?!
  16. First of all, I really think this is going to turn into a pissing match soon. I am SHOCKED it is still allowed. With that said... The IAFF, as others have said, is a union that is there to lookout for it's members and it's future existence. Nothing different then the Teamsters, CSEA, CWA, PBA, etc. For them to shut down the volunteer fire service would be as difficult, if not more so, then if the Local 3 tried to stop every non-union shop from doing electrical work. For anyone to feel offended is naive, if you are a career FF and volunteer in your free time power to you and THANK YOU. The concerns of your health and well-being are legitimate concerns and I have seen first hand how quickly your insurance will turn your back on you if they can avoid paying for your problems if they can prove it happened "elsewhere." Let's face it, paid or volunteer not all of the "benefits" we are told that are there for us if we need them are there. Hometown Heroes Act ring a bell?! LODD benefits held up over red tape? The bottom line here is that there is no guarantee our loved ones will receive all of the things we are told are there God forbid we are hurt or killed. The concerns of your health and well-being are legitimate concerns and I have seen first hand how quickly your insurance will turn your back on you if they can avoid paying for your problems if they can prove it happened "elsewhere." It's a real shame, in my eyes, that all of the organizations "looking out for us" volunteers, the IAFF and all others created to represent us can't work together and see to it that our loved ones, as well as us, can rest a little easier knowing the risks we take don't go ignored.
  17. I have more to throw in later, but for now I will say this. I don't see why this thread is called "IAFF proposed Anti-Volunteering Bill." Seems like it isn't true so why keep it up like this?
  18. Funny...I don't smell any CO.....must be OK in here...
  19. Not to mention it will come in handy on I287 and I95 where you guys run.
  20. Captain Benz, Watching this a couple of things went thru my mind. 1. If the bars on the window are an obstruction, wouldn't cutting around the window frame eliminate that problem? (Assuming the exterior walls aren't too tough and time-consuming). 2. Assuming once again that the exterior wall is not to tough, breaching it below or even next to the window could be beneficial, no? We were lucky enough a year ago to drill on an old building in Mohegan, and one of our evolutions was to rescue members on the 2nd floor. We cut from the sill to the floor to make the opening not only larger, but easier to remove the brothers. At this same drill, me and a partner had to make entry on the ground floor. The windows were boarded up well so instead of wasting time forcing it off, we cut a doorway out of it and walked in. 3. If they were removing that FF into a TL bucket then it wasn't so bad. But if it is on to a ground ladder, perhaps setting up a belay line with another ladder or aerial as a high point might be better and safer? Thoughts? I like that prop, seems simple and could be used for a couple of different things. Good find Nutty.
  21. I subscribe to Fire Engineering and get Firehouse after others read it at the firehouse. Fire Engineering is much better in my opinion.
  22. Some of the people we take in are confused and perhaps lost soles - but how can we tell unless we get references, background checks and information from prior departments they may have been affiliated with. It's really a luck of the draw kind of thing with members - I estimate that every 6 members we get, usually 1 or 2 work out and are useful, the others fade off into the sunset. The individual that oswego was talking about is a friend of mine and I will defend him anytime, anyplace. He is a big-hearted guy that has been an amazing asset to our Department. He made a dumb mistake, but he took the fall and he has had to deal with that since. So many people stepped up and spoke on his behalf, that is why we took him in. Taking in members has to be more then filling out a form - get out there and ask around before you get your a** burned!
  23. I love Joe Torre, and I hope he sticks around. If he doesn't, I can think of 3 guys that would be good replacements. 1. Don Mattingly 2. Joe Gerardi 3. Remember585 I hope that Posada comes back at least for another year or two as well. He is a solid part of the team and is a stand-up guy all around. If A-Rod goes, poop happens, but time to cut some dead weight - start with CLEMENS.
  24. I have to work that night Mike, sorry. One question, will you be giving our Catnip?!
