Are there poles in those trailers FDMV is using?! Not sure how old it is, but our Grand Street firehouse was the original Croton Schoolhouse.... around the turn of the century I think... Maybe xchief2x knows when it was built and can chime in.

I like it, and wish the brothers of PVVFD the best of luck with it!

AMEN BROTHER! I grew up with both of my parents working. My Mom works as a Nurse, and when I was little she did 3-11 shifts. Dad was a Cop who worked around the clock. He also managed to make as many of our important things - like school stuff, sports, etc. - on top of being Fire Chief TWICE. Mom found the time to work as a nurse to join and do EMS in addition to all of our other "kid stuff." It's not about the parents not having enough time - it's about them FINDING TIME and putting other stuff ahead of themselves for a change. I sometimes go on an EMS call for an injured child, and the parents seem ANNOYED that they now have to go to the ER with Junior because he ran thru a plate glass door. Makes me want to give them an up close and personal on how that feels to their kid.... Another thing... We always talk in our firehouse about recruitment. The truth of the matter is that most of our GOOD members generally show up on their own, unprovoked. Those that we talk into joining usually don't pan out. Anyone else get this impression?

1. Don't put your old shirts in clothes drop bins! 2. Don't put "certification levels" on shirts and give them out. 3. Look on the internet, at some stores and on many boardwalks, they sell shirts that say "Lifeguard" in sizes up to 5X.... how many 5X Lifeguards are really out there?! I wear shirts from Fire Departments all over the place simply because I like them. I don't pretend to be a member of any of these places. On a side note, one of our jackets showed up somewhere and our guy (tanker10engr) got a pic of it.... (PS, this wasn't a joke)...

I can see it now... "60 Control to XVAC, 3rd request for an EMT and a Chaplain..."

Croton 2082, M12 & R18 were dispatched off of Croton Point Park for a vessel taking on water. The boat in question was actually on the other side of the river near the lighthouse. Rockland Sheriffs, Westchester County PD and Sea-Tow were also on location.

60 Control doesn't acknowledge Irvington FD because we aren't their dispatchers. BUT, if IFD is going to a call dispatched by us, then we acknowledge them. It's no different in Irvington then when they used 46.26 to "communicate" and got no answer from their PD. Now it's just on Fire 14. Most of the 14 Battalion is using the trunked system, whether it's for every run or whenever they need to communicate with others, including 60 Control. Departments like Ardsley, Hastings, Tarrytown, Sleepy, Elmsford, Hartsdale, etc. are using the trunked system to talk to 60 Control because they have their own frequencies, but they aren't monitored by 60 Control nor in most cases, do their neighbors monitor them. The trunked system is a great tool that we all can use, we just need to understand it more and get the hang of it.

SQUIRREL!!!! So, what tactics were used to contain the fire? Did anything other then normal firefighting strategies have to be used? This could be edumacational for all..... thanks.

It's the pic angle - if I remember from what I saw the other day.

I just want to know one thing. Do they teach that faux accent many from around here develop at the Rock or is that a self taught thing to make a new guy sound "cool?!" "Yeah bro, we cawt this workah the udder day..." Born and raised here in Westchester.... but all of a sudden they sound like they've been taught to sound like they're from south of here.... I've always like reading and listening to FDNY lingo, and seeing it try to make it's way into our neck of the woods (you know, "upstate" in Westchester). There's nothing wrong with it, but unless EVERYONE is on the same page and actually uses it RIGHT, then keep it in the City. Guys around here have a hard enough time understanding that the "trunked radios" aren't actually in the trunk.....

Went down and looked at it today, thanks Lt. Reilly for the tour. The key things about the rig that I liked were: Short OAL (Overall length) - 30'. Low hose bed. Hurst set up with two tools / pumps. Chevrons on back. Foam ready. Hydraulic generator. The bell which will come from the current E94 and it's predecessor. (Not a functional item, but I liked the nostalgic feel of it.) And..... AT LEAST THE DECK GUN IS RED.... Maybe the white is just a primer?! Best of luck to the BMFD with this well thought out rig. May it bring you many years of great service. One more thing - it should say "The Babe" on the front, not "The Bus" as a friendly nod to 2051 / 607!!!!

CBS 2 News is reporting hail in the size of TENNIS BALLS falling in the areas of Yonkers and east. BE CAREFUL out there guys!

Wow, nobody else to choose from?! Good for you Tom, keep up the good work. I always look forward to reading what you've got to post. Remember in the earlier times of EMTBravo we would go on, find a topic, and go back and forth throwing in our two cents?! Ahhh, memories of how we used to stay up at night at work during the down times! Congrats again JARHEAD!

Send the box. Why send less and open yourself up for major problems? In my eyes an Inside Electrical Problem would be more geared towards dim lights, a blown phase, etc. Sparks and smoke reported - the smoke wins and gets a box simply because that smoke could be a fire in the wall. In terms of apparatus positioning, I always think of it as "a job." Truck position, nearest water source, how long of a stretch, etc. are always accounted for. I'd put it in as a "STRU" in the CAD, then dispatch it as a possible electrical fire. The responding units would get the update "caller reports sparks and smoke coming from an outlet." PPE w/ SCBA (not donned yet), TIC, Water Can, Irons, Hook - the usual stuff. Burning electrical wires, the insulation and other crap in the walls can be nasty, so the SCBA is there should it be needed. If the juice is killed to the problem area, you can use the Water Can on it, the CO2 or a Dry-Chem. Like the Capt. said, Dry-chem makes a mess so I like to avoid it indoors as often as possible. Any reports of smoke, whether visible or an odor, gets the full assignment (3 Eng, 1 Truck, 1 Rescue, 1 Tanker where needed) in our district. Based on dispatch info, time of day, weather, updates, known building issues (CIDS, etc.) more may be added or less sent depending on the items mentioned. Most commonly, if it sounds like "something" in our tanker boxes, we'll start out a Tanker or two instead of waiting and getting caught with our pants down.

Most kids would have to look up from their laptop computers, I-phones, PS 3, Xbox, Sidekick phones, their bongs, designer drugs or whatever else it is they do OTHER then being a productive member of society to even realize someone is pitching recruitment their way. It's a "me me me" world where everyone wants something in return for their time. There is no future in the volunteer fire service or EMS and the future of career fire departments is screwed too - no sense of pride, brotherhood or plain old "doing the right thing" left. I blame it on the parents who don't discipline their kids, the schools for being too easy on them and the overall lack of respect all public safety professionals (especially cops who continually get crapped on) for how useless future generations will be. I say we round up the Guidance Counselers and get them involved with our worlds and maybe then we can get some of these skateboarding, pot smoking, LEXUS DRIVING (Grrrrr) punks a sense of how to give back - whether they do it for nothing or pursue a career as a firefighter, EMT, Medic or Cop. Stop pushing everyone into "corporate America" where they never have a sense of self-satisfaction and bury their miseries in a bottle....

Cool, with buckets of fried chicken and other bad foods, he is giving HIMSELF a death sentence.... It may be slow but in time it will take him out!

Yeah, and as scary as it was for you guys, it was THE WORST THING I EVER HEARD on my end of the radio. Especially knowing that my guys, specifically my Dad and my friend were in that rig and I had no idea how bad it was. If you don't wear your belts for you then do it for those with you, those on the road with you, those at home waiting for you and those who look up to you. That accident prompted my change in behavior too, and prevented me from serious injury in both of my accidents this past December. If I can find the photos from my Ambulance crash I will share them. It was minor, but I am more then confident if I wasn't wearing my belt it would of been worse for me. As for the accident in my POV (not a call, just driving) if I wasn't wearing it I more then likely would of been ejected or sent into the windshield. I would rather be the butt of everyone's jokes and criticism then in the ground rotting! WEAR IT, WEAR IT, WEAR IT. 'Nuff said...

Is this one of the trailers purchased by WCDES for MCIs? We have one now, sitting at Croton EMS HQ / FD Station 3. Hopefully we never need to use it, well, drills are OK.
