  2. Very sad to hear. May God look over you, your family and your brothers in the FDNY.
  3. Thanks for the kind words everyone. More importantly, thanks to the EMTBravo staff, especially Seth, for creating a forum for us all to learn from and to be an active part of the firefighting, EMS and law enforcement communities. This site has provided me with a lot of information, different perspectives on how things are done and more importantly, something to do when I am on the internet other then watching dumb videos on Youtube. Thanks for the recognition, and I am glad to be a member of the EMTBravo family. Never forget Lt. Mike Neuner - Brewster NY Fire Department #585 - LODD 6/22/97 We miss you Mike, and you're forever in our hearts!
  4. Reading this makes me proud to be in the same Battalion as them! Nicely done Buchanan, nicely done.
  5. Based on those numbers, that would put 1 ALS rig , 1 BLS rig and the Tri-Community Fly-Car on 24/7. That's great, but what's the fate of the volunteers going to be? Where do they fit in and what's the point of calling it OVAC anymore? I am in no way intending to start a fight or to flame anyone, it's a legitimate question of interest.
  6. GO TIGERS!!!! Croton-Harmon High School #76 Class of 1996 Yeah, I spent more time on the bench but whatever... LOL
  7. Whole story here: http://www.lohud.com/article/20081120/NEWS02/811200527 What is this guy and his wife thinking? I get it, he has a grudge, but come on...

  9. I think it's no so much going out to bid so much as it is going out to pasture...
  10. Steve, The utility-type vehicle you're talking about is probably the EMS Duty Car they were trying to get which has been put on hold. As 2084 said, 2082 is expecting an Expedition circa several weeks ago to replace his 2001 Explorer. 630 - Whaddya sayin'? My ride is pimp.....
  11. I'd say squatters and/or arson. Anyone want to make a wager? As for the volunteer / paid thing - I'll stay out of it - not my thing.
  12. Dave, 1. Circulate your pump to reduce the chance of it freezing up. 2. Keep your nozzles open a bit so water keeps flowing. This will cut down the chance of your lines freezing. 3. Occassionally extend/retract aerials and move them around to keep them from freezing up. Good question. Hope these responses help you.
  13. The email name means nothing. I know guys whose email addresses claim things they aren't - such as a Chief Car #, a Dr., a ninja, and in my case, a roundhead - which I really don't have. I agree I think some people are way too sensitive. Tommy's a good guy, I don't exactly see him spending time burning crosses or attending Klan meetings. As a matter of fact, I seem to recall a fire a couple years ago on Water Street where him and another FF went into a burning building and saved a black woman and her baby. Pretty sure pics are out there somewhere... Wait, I found it... Tommy's in the back carrying the baby, Matt Scarduzio from E96 has the mother.
  14. Maybe New Rochelle can put magnets on L12 since it's workload in Mount Vernon may be on the rise?
  15. Quick - what was the plate # on the Red Focus?
  16. Stay the F outta Westchester until 1900 AT LEAST! Let Group 3 deal with it!
  17. I see one thing with this rig I don't particularly care for, and I see it on more and more ambulances. STOP MOUNTING AIR HORNS ON THE CAB ROOF! The NFPA knew how damaging it is to your hearing to have speakers and airhorns overhead, and that's why they were moved to the front bumper. Ambulances can (and should) put their air horns (not that I think they are needed in most cases) in the front bumper, which will help the hearing of crew members over time. Other then that, a lot of neat concepts, good luck with the rig!
  18. Hey Eric, if you don't want it - I'LL GLADLY TAKE IT! Very cool and noble of him, not that I would expect anything less.
  19. We keep a piece of webbing on our Hydra-Ram with a slip knot on it to grab a door knob so the door doesn't get away from us. Some other thoughts... Wooden doors... Solid: Irons Hollow: Shove knife, screwdriver between door and jam. Or popping the pins out of the hinges. Metal doors... Outward: Irons Inward: Hydra-ram, then Irons. Also, if it is loaded with locks or other safety measures, and there is a legit emergency behind it - K12. Cut the skin and take a look, or if you know what is behind it and it makes sense to do so - make a pie cut around the latch and open that sucker up. Door control for us firefighter types is important too. Bring a hook, a piece of rope or webbing to control the door, so it doesn't fly open. Position the handline in the right spot and be ready to use that door as a shield from fire.
  20. Very sad to hear - God bless and rest in peace.
  21. Ewwwww.......BLUE fire gear?
  22. Everyone is in such a hurry to send people off to classes but these people know nothing abou their own Department! Years ago, most members were taken in and shown the ropes by the senior men in their firehouse. They would tell them the rules, then they would give them the unwritten rules of how things went. This helped them respect the way things go in their department, and helped them become better TEAM PLAYERS in their departments. Now, you send someone off to the training center for, say, Firefighter I. This newbie knows virtually nothing about the fire service, knows little about the equipment they will be wearing, knows close to nothing about actual firefighting startegies and tactics, but yet they come back to the FD telling everyone how things should be done because "That's what my Instructor said." I know of guys and gals not just in my Department but all around the lower Hudson Valley that say the same thing - there is no more team concept! It's all about the ideas drilled into their heads at their classes of how things "should be" and "on my job we do it this way" modes of teaching. Before you have a chance to mold a good firefighter and maybe a future officer, they've become brainwashed that everything has to be done the way their Instructor tells them because that's how he does it at his job or back at his FD. We all need to provide in house training on how the department operates, what is expected from each member and each officer and go over your SOPs with them BEFORE SENDING THEM TO CLASS! This is also true for Officers or wannabe officers. So often I run into someone who just completed IFO or FO 1 and they think they are qualified to lead, but still haven't put in their time nor have they even caught some work. Officer training is a must, I am not disagreeing, but we need to train our members FIRST and make it an ongoing process. What AFD does every day isn't the same as BFD and so on. Junior level officers should have basic FF training, AVET, HMFRO, TCO and other classes like this. As they move up the ranks, send them to the IFO and FO 1, FO 2 courses. If they're going to be the junior officer that is at the bottom of the chain of command, then make sure they are good firefighters, good team players and have a good "what's best for the Department" mentality. Don't elect or appoint them simply because they took Fire Officer classes. The other thing that drives me nuts is when I see someone that I know is fairly new, inexperienced and has yet to prove their worth wearing a white shield or different colored helmet that says Lieutenant or Captain. What are we, the damn vollies, doing? What ever happened to electing, picking, choosing or appointing people that can lead because they have the experience, knowledge and know how to do it? It makes me sad for the future of the volunteer fire service that as much as we pound our chests and brag that we are doing the best we can, we aren't doing so when it comes to officer selection. Sorry for the rant.
  23. Thanks Tim!
  24. BUMP! Enrollment is very, very low - mostly members of the CFD. Come on, none of us knows EVERYTHING about building construction... Class should be less then 3 hours, and yes, we're serving refreshments. Go to the FASNY website to sign up!
