  1. And use all of your fingers next time! Hey Chris, can that thing go across the river, pick up a Crave Case, and drop it on 4 Dana Road???
  2. I know the Quantam has been around for a few years now, and I may offend some of you.... But they are funny looking! Dare I say, ugly?!
  3. I will be, Mike, just as soon as I have all the info....
  4. I looked at the website and found nothing other then the training requirements. I'm looking for a breakdown of the actual practical stuff that needs to be done. The announcement I got from Dutchess doesn't say anything about it.
  5. I've heard that it was a fire alarm activation that brought the FD there. I also doubt any wrongdoing by the staff at PMH, it sounds like a freak accident.
  6. Good point, but most people in good ole' Westchester don't realize the difference between paid and volunteer firefighters and EMS, they see a cop at their door, and barely take notice of which agency they're from, and for the most part, people don't really acknowledge our existence until they need us or we somehow "impede" their lives. If you don't beleive me, look at the voter turnouts from the community when there's an issue regarding the local FD. The turnout is generally low, is made up of members, family members, friends of someone in the FD or EMS and the few older people who still beleive that voting is a responsibility and not just "something to do." I am a volunteer firefighter and I was an EMT. I have been called a professional fireman, a****** volunteer, hero, moron, paramedic, cop, officer, that kid down the street and even been the brother of that girl that used to play with my kids. Nobody REALLY knows, nor do most of them care.
  7. Sounds like a great idea, but I wouldn't count on Croton Point. That park is busy all Summer.
  8. We never really had this issue of Interior vs. Exterior because nobody ever took the time to notice the differences. Now, with all the liabilities of everything, it's more important then ever to make a clear distinction between the two. Some of the below is currently in effect, others are "coming soon." Active Exterior Personnel Completion of an annual Physical clearing them for "Exterior functions" Completion of Scene Support Ops or an equivalent Completion of Haz-Mat First Responder Ops & annual refresher Completion of Confined Space Awareness & Safety & annual refresher Completion of Initial OSHA 15 Hour Training and Annual "8" Completion of CPR training (including AED) Exterior Personnel have RED accountability tags. Exploration into possible different colored helmets is being looked into, or something similar. Active Interior Personnel Completion of an annual Physical clearing them for "Interior functions" Completion of Firefighter I or an equivalent Completion of Haz-Mat First Responder Ops & annual refresher Completion of Confined Space Awareness & Safety & annual refresher Completion of Initial OSHA 15 Hour Training and Annual "8" Completion of CPR training (including AED) Completion of Firefighter Survival Completion of Personal Escape training & annual refresher (once we settle on a system and get them) Interior Personnel have GREEN accountability tags. The tag colors are uniform within our Battalion which makes life easier when at an incident. Beginning last year, we started buying "generic" helmet fronts with orange inserts saying "Prob. Firefighter" to give members until they complete their required training. Of course, some have finished the training and still have them because money is a little tight, and some that need it are using "spares" because we're all out. It's new and it's got it's growing pains, but hopefully by the end of this year it will all be in place. As far as the training and "trial by fire" stuff goes - We've been lucky with our last dozen or so members. They either show great initiative and take all the training and come to drills and calls, or they just vanish and find themselves being dropped from the department. By lucky, I mean that it's either all or nothing and we're not sorting through the mess to figure out who is going to pan out and who is going to be a waste of our time. It would be nice to see Westchester County create a uniform standard requirements for Interior and Exterior, agree to an accountability system (colors, at the least) and even a "helmet code" where one color helmet in Department A means the same thing in Departments B, C, L, Z, etc. Rant over.... hope this info helps a little.
  9. Moooooooooooosssseeeeeee! Congrats and good luck to you and the rest of the YHFD!
  10. As awful as this is (and it IS AWFUL!) imagine what would of happened if the fire got worst. What if the firefighters got hurt or killed responding there or putting out the fire? I hope the person(s) involved get charged with arson, animal cruelty and anything else that could apply considering they lit a fire in a multi-family dwelling.
  11. 2273 posted it the other day, I remember reading it. Sorry Montrose, I'm stuck at work and can't make it. Hope it's a good one!
  12. Great photos. Excellent rig position. Sweet sweater!
  13. Members of the Croton FD completed the Passenger Train Rescue class given by Metro-North Fire today. Here's a couple of pictures. More info and pictures on our website www.crotonfd.com with a direct link here. Thanks to Assistant Chief Bob Stinson from Metro-North Fire & Safety and to those members of the CFD that made it to class this Easter weekend. Keep it up guys!
  14. TR54 - Thank you!
  15. Just keep in mind, while there are many EMD centers around, not many are actually "accredited."
  16. Croton FD as of 1/1/09 (2nd year of two year terms) Chief (2081): Art Roosa Jr. 1st Asst (2082): Phil Dinkler 2nd Asst (2083): John Munson
  17. Once again proving that no fire, no matter how small a fire or building, and no matter how big or busy a department is, should be taken for granted. God bless these two brave men, and may God look over the brothers in Houston.
  18. The PAIs of the EMD seem to change often to reflect the changes that EMTs can now do in the field. Off the top of my head I know we have the ability to tell a caller to "Do as the Doctor has instructed in these situations...." and "If they have a prescribed inhaler use it..." In the last protocol update, we are now able to give instructions that follow the line EMTs use to administer (assist) with aspirin. It still amazes me there's agencies that choose not to have this tool to better help those in need.
  19. LOL. That's what he gets for going to Home Depot in Hawthorne!
  20. Brother Spanky wasn't there this time.
  21. Two things. 1. My opinions are mine and mine alone, which do not reflect on any affiliations I have. 2. I am not talking about any specific incidents or organizations so nobody should take it personally. Last year we had an MVA in the south east part of our district in the Town of Cortlandt. I arrived first, finding a car split in half with one still in it. I requested STAT on standby pending medical evaluation. ALS arrived and asked for us to launch the bird. Her reasoning was that we were 5-8 minutes from any major roads, that it would take a total of 20-25 minutes to get to WMC and we had to do a bried disentanglement and extrication to get him out of the wreck. He was stable enough to go by ground, but because we already had them on Standby and were out of the way she felt it would be faster to fly him. Tommy, it isn't just traumas anymore. I've heard calls for a woman in labor that don't get covered. In one case I remember, the PD made a delivery and waited for the ambulance to show up. One other case I remember the Mutual Aid showed up and had the woman in the back of the rig, was heading off to the ED and she popped. We just split EMS from the FD less then a year ago. I haven't seen any issues yet. We've had guys at the call with FD that are members of EMS who "change hats" and assist EMS either as a driver or another EMT. Heck, one day we had an MVA and EMS was out the door responding, so I asked the EMS Lieutenant if he could drive our Rescue (which he is qualified on being a member of FD). We're all there for one reason - TO HELP THOSE IN NEED! If you've got an incident like you speak of and people show up with FD that are members of EMS and don't help out, then they should be ashamed of themselves! Go ahead and hate me people, but it's true. If your ego is too big to take off your turnout coat and drive an ambulance (assuming you're qualified to do so) then go home. WHO ARE YOU REALLY HELPING? We used to have the same problems here when FD did EMS. Guys would straight up refuse to help out the Ambulance because they were there with the FD. I probably said it once or twice myself. But in today's age of diminishing personnel and those with stopwatches & lawyers, we've got to use our heads! What if the patient DIES? I bet that story won't be on the department website and nobody will be wearing a shiny new Life Save award! You bring up a perfectly legitimate subject and one that is worth discussing. I think this subject can be discussed in depth without having to cite specific incidents, so let's see how it goes!
  22. Always fun up at The Point. Thanks Holly and gang for a good time!
  23. I'm sorry to hear of this tragedy. I don't know Officer White, but he sounds like a standup guy. God bless you, your family, the DFPD and DFFD on their loss.
  24. I'm off and the calendar is clear - see you there!
  25. I don't think we should make excuses, but I can see how this happens. I've been to a few fires where there's been so much crap in the building or apartment where you can't find the floor, doors, beds, etc. Even using a TIC you're not going to find a body if it is deeply covered by junk, in a closet hidden behind shelves or mirrors, etc. People always seem to find new and amazing way of storing their stuff, and people are even finding ways to fit people into places that shouldn't even be considered living spaces.
