  1. That's what many were saying!
  2. Why does the FASNY statement only say volunteer FD and EMS vehicles? We should be using blue and amber to the rear of all emergency vehicles and no more clear!
  3. Awesome photo Duddy!
  4. Is it me or does it seem like the number of drunk-driving incidents in general is rising? Also, isn't it obvious, no matter what language you speak, that white lines are on your right, yellow on your left in this country? Signs aren't to blame, drunks who don't know better then to not get behind the wheel ARE! In the last two days I dealt with two drunk driver incidents - ENOUGH IS ENOUGH - LOCK ALL OF THEM UP!!!!
  5. I might have to look into this. I break out in cold sweats whenever I can't get on and play Farkle...
  6. Good to see Dad working hard.... What's the blue helmet mean?
  7. It's probably a secret plan from the City of Mount Vernon. Buy enclosed cabs that can double as spare apparatus AND sleeping quarters...

  9. For the most part, most of the incentives offered seem to do more damage then good. Guys are skating by, racking up their points to qualify for the LOSAP system, yet they don't answer calls, make any drills or are of any REAL use when you need it. Every GOOD member I know, in my own and all the other departments I have friends in, do it out of the love they have for doing it. We have talked about it over and over again, and it seems that the harder we try to get people, the less the chances are that they'll be a true benefit. Those that want to do it for the RIGHT REASONS will come knocking on your door when they're ready to make the commitment. JFLYNN - I have applications and contact info for you when you're ready to join somewhere. Just shoot me a PM and I will help you out!
  10. God bless these firefighters, their families and their brothers in the BFD.
  11. We recently became "blessed" with Ethanol at one of the gas stations in our response area. Our primary foam is carried on Engine 118, which has a 100 gallon foam tank carrying 1% / 3% National Foam AR-AFFF. (I think) Our other two Engines carry 2-3 buckets of the same foam, and we are currently looking at other ways to carry foam, either on our Rescue or the Truck. It's a matter of space really. We keep a stash of extra foam in the stations, but moving it from there to an incident is a whole 'nother issue... We also cover the Metro-North Croton Harmon Yards, where they have a 200,000 gallon above ground diesel tank. Needless to say, a significant risk is on our hands and our foam supply, and that available to us, may not be sufficent. Do I think as a county we could use more - yes. Do I see it happening given the current times - nope. Ironically, we had a foam drill on Monday night with Engine 119 & Tanker 10, where we showed newer members how to set up the eductor, the differences between a foam nozzle and a fog nozzle, the differences in foam % and the three methods of application - roll on, bank down and rain down. If you don't have the foam to use, a pint of soap (we used Dawn) mixed with five gallons of water works OK.
  12. I hate potheads. They make lazy people like me look bad, not to mention they always seem to get the last taquito at 7-11 at 2AM when I'm hungry! And don't even get me started about how long it takes them to spit out their order at White Castle!!!!!!!!!!
  13. My guess would be that we only have one trailer so far due to the cost of it, and the amount of incidents it has been to. We all know that if cost wasn't a factor, we probably would see one of these in every firehouse. But given the few responses it's made in it's existence here, it's probably a hard sell to the county to get any more of them.
  14. There was a photo of my Grandpa putting out a fire in his own building many, many years ago, that always inspired me. He was in regular clothes helping push a line in from a fire escape. I remember thinking "I want to be like that!" He was active, still coming to meetings, Monday night rig checks and calls, up until he got cancer and passed away in October of 1996. My other memory that inspired me is one of my Dad. I don't remember the specifics, but there was a house fire, and he responded as a Chief. He and a Croton PD Officer grabbed a ladder, my father went up and rescued a handicapped man from his burning house. I was too young to be there, but I remember people telling me that the man was "dead weight" weighing like 250 pounds. They also told me the ladder was bent after they made it out safely. Hearing this story pretty much locked me into wanting to be a firefighter in Croton, just like my Dad, Grandpa and Great-grandfather (whom I never got to meet). I have so many other role models between cousins, Uncles and friends in not only my department, but all over the place. The best role models, in my opinion, are those that don't even have to tell you their stories, because their actions speak so much louder. I envy those that have been around 20, 30, 40, 50 and more years that still get up at night and answer calls. They're the ones I envy and respect the most, simply because they do it for no other reason then answering their duty. I hope that one day, perhaps, I can be a role model to not only my own kids, but all of my little cousins, neices and nephews. NFD - AWESOME STORY! Thanks for sharing it!!!
  15. Great photos! Nothing's better then looking at the old Macks!
  16. I remember that. Did you have any form of an SOP where it stated only one rig turned on the repeater and everyone else used that unit's? I know some places will put the first due's repeater on for all to use, as needed.
  17. Your profile says you're 14-17 - why would you be on a radio?!
  18. Have vehicle repeaters ever been explored for WCPD? Maybe UHF portables and a PAC-RT type repeater on their VHF system could be helpful, considering all of the buildings and odd terrains the WCPD has to deal with. Trunking, it would cost way too much for a safe, portable radio friendly system for the WCPD.
  19. It looks nice! Very respectful tribute to those lost.
  20. For the FDs and Empress, PD takes the 911 call and directs it to the appropriate service.
  21. I'd say Harrison is primarily volunteer...no?

  23. I'm sure Monty, SteveOFD or TR54 can better answer this but I'll take a stab at it. Ossining FD is dispatched by Ossining Village PD for all calls. During the daytime, they have part-time administrative assistants who take over as dispatchers once the call is toned out. All other times the OFD base is staffed by volunteers - all members of the OFD. Normally, you will hear OPD dispatch the OFD to a run, then their base takes over all communications with the Chiefs and apparatus. Their dispatch office is at their new HQ on State Street, home of L41 & R14.
