I recently got around to posting some pictures from our early years. So far, I have the old rigs page up. Please take a look and let me know what you think. http://www.engine119croton.org/main_subite...sid=101&ssid=19 If it doesn't work, go to www.engine119croton.org and take a look. Thanks!

The first T10 was a Mack. 1963 I believe. That went to Pocantico Hills. The 1962 Mack E119 went to an outfit in Indiana. I'll ask 2084 which one, he remembers where and how much we got for it. As for the Mack chasis on the current T10, it was discussed, but the cost would of went up nearly $100,000 I am told!!

Rarely, anywhere, do I see a 2nd line pulled.

"Father, father, come quick. It's a thanksgiving miracle!!!" It's about time they worked again. Now, if only my digital cable would work when I watched it.....

It's more of a matter of opinion. Kind of like "fire is doubtful." But everyone has to sound cool on the air. Technically speaking, if you have one line stretched and operating, you should (as a rule of thumb) have a 2nd stretched, as a means of egress. Of course, with rubbish, brush and vehicle fires, one line usually does the job, and pulling a second may take more time then its worth.

Nothing I can't already do with the webbing and beaners I already carry. Not to mention converting the SCBA into a "last-resort" harness. If one of my brothers or sisters go down, the last thing I would do is fuss around with some gadget.

I agree, theft from a firehouse is a low thing to do. But, most theft occurs indoors. I don't think there is a soul on this board who hasn't heard of or seen such pathetic actions in their own FD or VAC.

How does your dept respond to auto alarms, (does your oic tell you to 10-20, remain in quarters or does the apparatus make it to the call). We respond "Code one" or lights & sirens unless further information is provided. Generally, if info is given that it is a false alarm, the first due continues in "Code two" or no lights/ sirens. If there is a smoke condition, the assignment (Engine, Truck, Rescue) usually will continue in. If your apparatus arrives on scene does the crew get off the rig to investigate the alarm, or do they remain on the rig while someone else checks it out. This one is different each time. If a Chief arrives ahead of us, which is the case 90% of the time, they will talk to the homeowner / party on premise and hold the manpower outside. If it is a commercial alarm, especially at the 5-story nursing home we cover, a crew always goes in to check, while a Chief or someone else goes to reset the panel. Does the crew get off off of the rig prepared (tools/airpacks)? Ideally, the answer would be "yes, 100% of the time." However, we sometimes get told before we even respond that it is a false alarm and guys will "dress down." Otherwise, the other times we are suited up and ready to go. With my Engine, we always enter with the water can, set of irons, handlight, TIC and portable radios - even if it is false - so we are always in the habit of doing it. What does the oic/officer do if a dispatcher calls to inform the incomming units that there is one of the following. (food on the stove, workmen on location, steam from the shower ect.....) Again, this is a "case by case." Most of the time, a Chief and one rig will continue in to verify. IMO, I feel that we should let the whole assignment continue in, this way everyone gets an idea of places to position rigs, hydrants, new construction, etc. BUT - I'm not a white hat....... Good post!

Saw them THREE TIMES yesterday driving like maniacs. Route 9 North once. Route 9 South once. Albany Post Road / Route 9A north another time. All three times with lights and sirens. The time I saw them on 9 SB I was traveling along at 75 and got passed.... Is this good for the patient in the back, god forbid they crash?

If you are running the speakers directly from a scanner... Take your "positive" from the scanner into the "positive" on the first speaker. Then take the "negative" from speaker 1, hook it to the "positive" on speaker 2. Then take the "Negative" from #2 and hook it to the "positive" on #3. Then run the "negative" of #3 back to the "negative" on your scanner. This is how we ran the house alert speakers in our quarters. Our resident electricians had a technical name for this - but I haven't got a clue what it is.

Today is Sunday. I am at work, and I have a few questions bouncing around in my head I am hoping someone here can help me with. 1. What is the "OFD Annual Event" today? My guess is that they're playing Trivial Pursuit. 2. What exactly does "fire is doubtful" mean to you? Does it mean that the fire is a pesimist? (spelling) 3. Whats the point of radio identifiers when they're not always correct? Ex: 'engine 1" calls 60 control, and it is using the "Car 6" identifier? If you think about it, your radio is a liar, and it should be grounded. No TV after dinner tonight for your radio! 4. Why am I awake? If you can help with any of these questions, I would greatly appreciate it.

Anytime Seth. As for a crave run - only once a month, anymore and I will need constant medical care...

Back in 1997 when I took the ARFF course, we were told by both our Instructor and the Airport Ops people that we can call on them if needed for an emergency. I don't know if this is still true, but I will look into it for you all.

Wow - for once I can see what superwacker is saying! I hate that too! So many times over the years I have seen the Driver wearing gloves to assist the crew, then drive the rig to the ER with them on! Not to mention my other peeves about decon. How often does anyone decon the following? Clipboard Radios Stethoscopes BP Cuffs Monitors Pens / penlights Siren knobs Steering wheel Another thing that drives me nuts - when the O2 bags are stored on the cot!!! You just changed the linens, and now you are putting your dirty bags on them?? ](*,)

This is a constructive & educational forum. Those of us whom have been members here for a while enjoy visiting and learning something new. I don't think a single one of us looks forward to logging on and reading someone's immature rants and raves. If you really have something to say, do it in a constructive, not destructive, way. You will earn more respect from all of us.

Forgotten once again was Croton's Engine 118. Engine 118 carries 100 gallons of AFFF foam and 1000 gallons of water. This is the second rig for Chemical Engine Co. #1 to carry on-board foam. The old E118, a 1963 Maxim, also had a foam tank, although it was much smaller.

From Firehouse.com Off-Duty Upstate New York Firefighter Dies in House Blaze Fellow Members Pull Comrade from Burning Home The Associated Press CHITTENANGO, N.Y. (AP) -- An 18-year-old off-duty volunteer firefighter died today in an upstate house blaze. Authorities say Jeff Shetler was pulled from the burning home by fellow members of the Chittenango Fire Department. He was taken by ambulance to University Hospital in Syracuse where he died. Shetler was asleep in an upstairs bedroom when the fire began shortly after 8 a-m. Investigators say his parents had left for work and there was no smoke detector to wake him. Shetler graduated from firefighter training last month and recently joined the department. The cause is under investigation, but fire investigators believe an electrical problem on the first floor may be to blame. Chittenango is 14 miles east of Syracuse. This is especially sad, with the holidays fast approaching. Thoughts and prayers with his family and fellow firefighters.

April 16, 1988. I remember because it was only 3 hours after my Father's first term as Chief. The mother and 2 kids did perish. Matt, do you remember the assembly we had to go to at CET??

Calling the ER is a pain in the a$$!!! 90% of the time we do any transports to Phelps, we have to be within a mile to reach them via radio. Not to mention all the other traffic on 155.220 - we seem like we're in constant competition to make our transmissions. As far as cell service - not a bad idea, however I have been put on hold awaiting someone up until we've backed up to the ER doors! There is no easy solution to anything, but I am sure one will arise eventually.

The Croton/Cortlandt area is awful!! I was sitting in my living room the other day, and my other half was right next to me. We both had "full signal service" but when I keyed her up, I got the notorious "User not reachable A5" message. This went on for nearly a whole week calling people and with my incoming calls. If Nextel is reading this - "DO SOMETHING - YOUR SERVICE IS SUB-PAR AT BEST!"
