I agree with 648. I enjoyed what I learned in this class so much that I've taken it twice. Anything you can learn to save yourself or your brothers is worth taking. I took the original pilot class and I took it again in February 2003. The one thing I noticed that I really appreciated was the different approaches each Instructor takes. Like they always say, "there's more then one way to skin a chicken."

Common sense. Have it? Use it! My Fire Department does not respond lights & sirens to every fire call, BASED ON DISPATCH INFORMATION. For example, our SOG states that a "Code 2" response (no lights or sirens) is to be used for the following calls, unless other pertinent information is received. Carbon Monoxide Alarms with no Symptoms. Fluid Spills Rubbish (no value) fires And on automatic alarms only the first due responds "code 1" and the balance comes in "code 2." We also have a written SOG stating that Mutual Aid to scenes is "Code 1" and to relocate is only a "code 2." When responding, we generally receive updates like "setoff in error," or "smoke from cooking" and our units will continue in "Code 2" for investigation. Remember, lights and sirens don't put out the fires or save lives, the people on the rigs do. Get them there safe and alive.

The V&T law posted is pretty cut and dry....green lights are for VAC members only.

Not true. All of the 60 Control staff are EMD certified, and we utilize the ProQA software for all EMS calls per our protocols. The only reason your agency gets ALS and BLS response for everything is YOUR PROTOCOL, hence no FD response on certain types of calls. I think, and again this is MY OWN OPINION, your agency is one of the best in Westchester, and I don't recall any times where I had to send Mutual Aid into your jurisdiction. Keep up the good work! On a side note, I think that ALS abuse is a major issue. But what makes matters worse is when patient transport is drastically delayed awaiting Mutual Aid, and the Medic is ALREADY ON SCENE. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you,re already there, that patient is in fact under your care, right? Delaying the transport because of personal feelings on covering BLS calls is inappropriate. If you're there, and in some instances for 10-20 minutes awaiting Mutual Aid, and the local VAC has only a driver, why not take in the transport? More importantly, the local agencies have to resolve the staffing issue and stop relying on ALS Fly-Cars!!! Suck it up and pay someone if you have to - and think about your public, not your pride! How proud can you really be if you couldn't cover a call in sufficient time and the outcome is DEATH? THINK ABOUT IT!

First of all, the comment made that "we've all done it" is not true. I know that I can speak for many people, myself included, that have NEVER been drunk in a bar in public in uniform, let alone in a firehouse shirt. At a parade? Yes, a few years back before I came to my senses. Do I agree with drinking at a bar when in uniform - that's a tough one that I'd rather not touch. Bottom line, whatever you do, be smart about it. You represent yourself, your company and more importantly, your whole service when you wear that uniform. It's bad enough that there's always been a public perception that the fire service is made up from a bunch of lushes, do we really need to keep adding fuel to that fire?! Here's another question. Is it at all appropriate for a Fire Chief to take the Chief's car to a bar, or even to a grocery store to buy beer for themselves? My humble opinion is no. Reason - if you are driving that car, you are abusing the reason you have it. Leave it home, because you sure as hell better not be responding in it if you're tossing back a couple of tall ones. Someone said to me, "what if I am using it to bring some of the guys out." Simple, if you are not drinking and are available for calls, you're going to respond, and chances are your "loaded" pals will also be in the car. USE YOUR HEADS DAMMIT!!!!!!!

Joe Raio is awesome. He seems to be the only one who gives an accurate forecast for our area!

If you're along the Hudson, the Croton repeater works great. I pick it up in Nanuet and north Jersey. 453.0250

Assess the needs of your own district - don't get something everyone else has just to be "cool." I am not too familiar with Ardsley, but seeing how you have had that Quint for so long, I would lean towards something similar to NWPFD Ladder 47. I am sure it is close to what you need. Another quint that would probably meet your needs is either of the Lake Mohegan Ladder trucks. If it's a tower-ladder you are looking for, I like Peekskill's TL45 or our own TL44. And do the right thing - get an on-board PTO generator. My preference is hydraulic, but diesels work well too. Good luck with your endeavor, by the way, where the hell are you going to put this rig?!

Thank God that the gun was empty. I hope she is given a firm, and LONG sentence from the Washington state judicial system.

Leather helmets for everyone?! Sign me up!

My sentiments exactly. How about this....how good is the Chief in the car?

Honestly, I like the suburban we had the best. It was white over red, had a decent amount of lights, and the back was setup well. It had storage for gear, radios mounted in the back, and a folding table that pulled out for a command area. Best part of the whole command area - it was done by members of our own FD.

The short-notice of this detail had no impact on how big of a success this was. It was nice to see so many members of the area's Fire, Police and EMS services come out and welcome home some of our american heroes. I know I will probably miss someone, but here's a list of units that I did in fact see. Peekskill FD: 2341, 2342, 2343, E130, E132, E133, E134, U17 and many members. Verplanck: 2491, TL46 Buchanan: E161 Montrose: 2271, TL8 Croton: 2082, 2083, E119, TL44, R18 Yorktown: 2531, E270 Cortlandt VAC: 88B1, 88B3 Peekskill VAC: 75B1, 75B3 Cortlandt Medics Banksville: U58, L77 Briarcliff: R37 Katonah: 2211 Mount Kisco: U13 Mamaroneck EMS New Castle, Peekskill, County, State, Buchanan Police units It was well setup. TL8 & TL46 had a huge flag setup to the south of the Armory, and TL44 & L77 had one setup to the north end. Apparatus were lined up on both sides of the street, with the members saluting and applauding. A round of applause for WCDES and Peekskill FD, giving those who fight for our way of life a nice, warm return home!

Lights aren't the only thing that make a Chief's car great. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good light show, but to me a well-designed car has more to it.
