  1. It's a mutiny!!! They're starting to believe that a non-red rig is actually a fire engine!!! DAMMIT!!! See the "CFD320" avatar, that's a nice rig!
  2. I recall during one of my flashover training classes a phrase known as "Fireman Soup." To the best of my recollection, if we were to crack open the knob with a fog pattern, it would steam up and bank down on the guys, possibly burining them with the steam?! As 6018 said, venting solves a bulk of our heat and gases problems. And, speaking of the water can use, we've toyed around with it at several drills to see how effective that can could actually be. BUT - we used it as it's designed, and we didn't attempt to "fog it" with our fingers. I don't know, I try not to be naive or ignorant about fire theories, but it seems to me so many members of our firefighting business are always trying to reinvent the wheel. I agree with the whole K.I.S.S. thing - and I also believe that the majority of our firefighter fatalities can be avoided. Unless I'm missing something, don't we lose more firefighters responding/returning to alarms and/or due to poor or unknown medical conditions then anything else?
  3. Our FAST members are actually required to keep their PPE with them in their vehicles, mainly because most of them have extra equipment that needs to be accounted for. As Art said, most of us keep our gear in our cars, but many of our members have a second set of gear hanging in quarters, just in case we're without our primary stuff. There was a post like this in the past, if I can find it I will merge the two...
  4. Some of the ones I know of... Best Engine - Croton E120 Best Aerial - Croton TL44 Best Rescue - Montrose VA HM-3 Best Regulation Uniform - Croton FD Best Overall Ambulance Corp - Cortlandt VAC Best Ambulance - Peekskill VAC I'll try and get some more for you!
  5. The suspect, Hernandez, was released shortly after his arrest and ordered to a long, successful career in the (You fill in the blank) PD where he seems to fit right in with his "high-level" of intelligence. Besides, he has a friend named "guns," you just can't beat that. Leave it to the NYPD to make an apprehension like that. I think its safe to say that many local Police agencies wouldn't notice something like this, because all of their available units are out "checking and advising" on something...... Hmmm......reminds me of a story that happened JUST THIS AFTERNOON....but I won't elaborate for the sake of topic hijacking.
  6. AMEN BROTHER!!!! =D> =D> =D>
  7. I think Jimmy's widow is hot. Tommy's Wife is smokin' too. Tommy is funny. Tommy's Dad and Uncle are too. But the best, because he is the dumbest, has to be Garrett. He reminds me of so many people I know. In case y'all didn't notice, I moved this topic out of the Fire & Rescue Operations to the Lounge. Does this fall under "hijacking?" :-k
  8. Bad radio etiquette!!! No reason to say "uh," "um," "ah," "er," & "hmmm" over the air. No reason to say "show this unit" on location, enroute to, responding etc. Be advised - if you're telling it to someone, they're advised! "We'll be in service for a drill." Who cares?! If its important, use the phone! "Engine 999 is back in quarters." Yeah, and?! Again, this can be done on the phone. "Croton Engine 119 to KDP 438 Croton Police" (just an example) You're the only Engine 119 - no need to add in the "Croton" part! People who two-way you by alerting you and not just "keying you up."
  9. Forno II on Grand Street is pretty good too. (west of the Mount Airy intersection). I also like Justin Thyme on Grand Street (east of the Mount Airy intersection.)
  10. PJ - You're oblivious to what most of us call "reality." In "Reality" 90-95% of us FIREFIGHTERS attend parades to take pride in ourselves, and to perhaps make some kid's day when we march by his smiling, flag-waving face. I, for one, don't care about trophies, and think all this "judging" ruins why we do what we do. Making the highly educated comment that "none of you will be Chiefs" is quite possibly the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Anyone you talk to can confirm that some Chiefs are just plain DUMB and having that title doesn't make them more superior then a regular firefighter. How a Chief does their job and how they treat their peers is what makes a good leader - not a title. And, on the same path, a f-ing trophy doesn't make a fire truck or a group of firefighters more superior then the others we march with. We're all the same! You, my friend, are a thick-headed, narrow-minded moron. Good luck in life, with your shiny fire trucks and dumb trophies. Let me know how well they put out your next fire.
  11. Also targeted, someone from my Company/Department. Boo-Hoo. If you're going to judge something, be prepared to be second-guessed! It's only natural, just like a sports ref / ump! People put a lot of time and effort into looking their best, so OBVIOUSLY they will be offended when they lose!!! I'm now taking bets that we don't win ANYTHING in the near future. Apparently, freedom of speech is dead. Any takers on this gamble? And, for the record, I can't believe the hot-button issue at a recent "association" meeting was this topic?! What about something of substance and actual importance?!!!!
  12. =D> My hat's off to the CCVAC Youth Corps and their Advisors for working on this. I am told that the idea cames from the Youth Corps members - which is damn noble of them! Best of luck with it!!!
  13. Seth, you working today? J/K - good point!!!
  14. ALS - the softball tournament you're thinking of was in Ossining. And as you and so many others have said, its a shame the condition that WMC is in, but its also sad that it isn't just a localized problem. Speaking first hand of their Hyperbaric program, its a great thing to have so close to us. Same goes for all their other specialized services. I hope a solution comes about.
  15. To put it bluntly, I found that this book SUCKS! I am trying to study for my recert, and a large portion of the items I was given to study weren't in this book. The information I was looking for and was fortunate enough to find was all over the place. I remember the Brady books I used to have, seemed like everything was in one place and simple to find. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?
  16. I don't get it....wouldn't Viagra slow the horse down, considering the weight and wind-resistance caused by the, um, how do I put it, enhancement?!
  17. =D> Outstanding!!!!! Glad to see some High School kids taking initative to help their community. If we had that at CHHS, perhaps I would of been a part of SOME after school function!!!
  18. 19. The I-page sent from 60 Control is only a secondary means of alarm notification. Each agency DISPATCHED by them can utilize this service, and it is limited to only a certain number of users. Persons interested should contact their Chief. Also, it isn't just limited to Nextels, go to the DES website for further info. Those of us in the archaic times that still get dispatched by our PD are unable to get this service.
  20. Here's some more..... People who leave animals unattended in their cars. Bowling, can't ever find a ball that I like. WEATHER MEN / WOMEN!!!! They are wrong WAY TOO OFTEN. My fire pager. People who wail on the siren at 03:00 on a road that is normally DEAD. Grocery shopping. Bed head. The NEW YORK YANKEES Commericals about the NYC West Side Stadium Close-talkers. People who call your nextel while you are working to brag that they are at a bar or club and having a great time. (It's not fair!) Oh, one last thing. CPR!!!! Every damn time I take it they change it again. Enough already! Make up your damn minds and stick with a plan! It must be a posse of High School girls creating these ideas. You know the kind I am talking about, the girls that change outfits 30 times before picking the FIRST one they tried on?! Happy Motha's Day!!!!!
  21. The curriculum covers it, yes. But check with your Department about their rules too. Some places call for more training, physicals (there's that word again), mask confidence, etc.
  22. Packs, yes, unless you know for fact its not a CO problem. Lights/sirens, like 1191stdue said our policy says no for no and yes for yes. (If you get what I mean). Meters - on every unit that goes on CO calls. Like 648 said too, EMS should have them. I also agree about overhaul. Worn one during overhaul last summer, almost $hit myself when I saw the level of CO in the room. Thanks to a little hydraulic ventilation (remember cfd320?) we took care of that problem pretty quickly.
  23. Fock the Minitor IV!!!! I am on my second IV now, thought this one was fine, guess I was wrong. Over the last two weeks, my pager has not activated for four calls (maybe more, I don't always carry it) and I have had it!!!! I was trying to rationalize it, I moved the charger, I changed the batteries and I blamed our base radio - turns out it's just my pager. Squad - I need that II back pal!!!
  24. If we had any balls as a Department, we would do what is best for our community and get dispatched by 60 Control FULL-TIME. That said, the reason you occassionally here 60 Control dispatch us is because; 1. They got the call, whether cellular, through SP, etc.. 2. It's a Mutual Aid call. 3. Our base is down. 4. Our PD didn't or won't dispatch us as we request, and we have to ask 60 Control do it. The re-dispatches you are speaking of were temporary, our tower wasn't working well so they would re-tone our calls for us. Simply put, any calls 60 gets for us, they dispatch first then notify our PD, to avoid any delay. For years 60 would call our PD to give them a call, and there would be delays and sometimes no dispatch at all.
  25. Well, at least someone got THEIR DRAWINGS!!!! We've been waiting several months for ours...
