  1. Check out the Westchester County DES site (www.westchestergov.com/emergserv). It also links to the WREMSCO site from there, should help you out.
  2. I recevied the following link from one of our Deputy Chiefs recently. I watched it twice, and I realized a few things. 1. All of us should watch this and familiar ourselves with flashover and flashover prevention. 2. If you have the oppurtunity, make time to take the Flashover Survival Course in Rockland County. I have taken it two times. It is the same thing as featured in this video clip. 3. Learn the signs so it doesn't happen to you! Here's the link: http://www.swedesurvival.com/popup_video_hi.asp I noticed a few things in this video that maybe some of you will too. The narrarator makes a comment about the amount of water used, but the Instructor explains how it is used makes the difference. I recall from my trainings that short bursts of water can control it, and using a wide fog on the smoke and fire can burn the firefighters. One thing we should keep in mind is to keep our nozzles set on a tight pattern all the time so in the heat of the moment our colleagues don't get hurt needlessly. To be honest, I think smooth bore nozzles with a 15/16" tip are great. We have two of them, and we are experimenting with those smooth bore / fog combo knobs. Make sure you know how your nozzles work, and more importantly, how each pattern will affect your fire attack. Be safe, Be smart.
  3. Pbvpm, Same thing goes at any job it seems. And, sadly, too many vollies in FD and EMS think they've done their time before they hit their one year anniversary.... Gimme a break!
  4. If people would just use their full identifiers once in a while, then less problems would arise. For example, there is an Engine 23, Tower Ladder 23, Rescue 23, Mini-Attack 23, Marine 23......so if you get on and call "23" who is going to answer?! If "2191" and "191" are confusing, why not say "Engine 191?" (JUST AN EXAMPLE, DON'T GET PISSED!!!) Who exactly is saying "81 to 83." Could be us, or it could be 2181 & 2183, 2281 & 2283, 2381 & 2383, 2481 & 2483, 2581 & 2583 or even 2181 to 2483........use the whole designator, they're there for a reason.
  5. If you're really interested in sitting at 60 for a shift or two, I will be more then happy to give you my schedule and you can cover it for me. =D> All kidding aside, before I worked there I just thought it was "answer the phone and radios." Over the 3 years I've been down here, I have learned so much and have earned a lot of respect for many of you in the field. But, I know that not all of you will agree, but our local PD's deserve some credit too. They generally operate with one officer on the desk to handle PD, FD, EMS. I know in our village that if we get a busy day, this poor guy is taking a beating. The Sgt. working during the Summerfest deserves a big pat on the back - despite any hardships any of us may of had in the past. It was one of the Village's busiest days, and he handled it well!

  7. Be careful what you say - they may "gig you" a few points next time they judge you.
  8. Good point made Seth! I know exactly what you mean. Every year we debate with our Chiefs about riding atop the rig for our Fire Prevention Day. What kind of message are we providing our community with about safety when we let their children ride somewhere we have deemed unsafe for ourselves?! In reference to the parade issue, as a general rule, our Company will not provide transportation to or from a parade if the person(s) have been drinking. That rig is in service for alarms once it is back in the district. Why transport people under the influence if the potential for an alarm is still there? I come from a long-tradition of firefighters - and I can share many stories of yester-year but I won't - because we all know them. The problem is with those of us in the fire service today, and we should be looking out for tomorrow! We can't keep "boozing up" and using a fire engine, Chief's car, bus, etc. to be our party transportation. We have to think about the consequences, not the fun, we can have. Open-style rigs are a pain in the a$$. Responding to alarms, going to drill, attending parades and even in funerals they continue to be nothing more then a headache. Sure we rode "up top" a few years back, but now that we know the potential for danger, why do we still do it? Sometimes a Chief says it is OK, but what is the Line Officer to do? Refuse? Abide? Who is liable not only in court, but who has to hold on to that guilt if something goes wrong? Better discipline from the top brass, thorough training programs and smart firefighters will end this problem. There is NO NEED for anymore L.O.D.I. or L.O.D.D. that we can (and should be) preventing!
  9. I enjoy the Peekskill July 4th Parade the most. It's a day to be proud to be American, it's not judged, and TONS of people come out for it! Parades are the best when people actually come out to see them! I enjoyed the HVVFA parade this past weekend in South Glens Falls - however I would have preferred watching it to see all the rigs and personnel. (Our pre-parade wiffle ball game ruled!) As for parade food - BLAH!!! The only good thing is the food our FD buys for us ahead of time. Hot dogs are getting played out.....
  10. Keep all sugar, caffiene and herbal supplements away from him! Do not, under any circumstances, let him have a hot chocolate at 2:00 am. He has more energy than a woman on an unlimited shopping spree. More fire in him then an old locomotive... Any blunt object will work, and finding one around any fire station, EMS house or Police station is easy. But, in all fairness, he did show me a few tricks and gave me some good info that I still use today to do my job. Keep up the good work Seth, FOSHEEZY!!! =D>
  11. It's been 8 years today (6/22/97) that Lt. Mike Neuner made the supreme sacrifice in Brewster, NY. For those of you who knew Mike, you know how I feel. He was a funny guy who was well worth spending time with. I know he is looking down on his family with pride. Especially with Mike Jr. graduating High School this week. We all miss you, Uncle Mike. Hope you're keeping things fun up there....
  12. I won't be there. For a picture of me, visit "America's Most Wanted." I believe several warrants are out for me......
  13. BUMP. www.ccvac.us I'll be there, hope to see you too!
  14. What was the title of the film this rig was in? Would love to see that old rig getting some action still...... Bad pun, Yeah, I know.
  15. Yeah.... 46.26. They're not repeaters, they are just radio transmitting antenna sites. There is no (known) UHF link to these specific towers.
  16. If you guys remember, say, 5-6 years ago, once in a while you would hear stupidity on the radio, but not as bad. Back then people only had the limitation of their portables and mobiles to be heard on. Now, we have so many cross-band repeaters that a simple 4 watt portable can have the capabilities of a 100 watt radio tower. A great addition to our services ruined from time to time by a$$holes who think they have to be heard 24/7. Cutty, I heard this too, and I live in Croton. Obviously this individual was unaware of the severity of the incident they were interfering with, and the severity of the stupidity they participated in. WAKE UP PEOPLE! The radios, regardless what you may think of the frequencies, radios, antennas, etc. are a lifeline. A firefighter's distress call, a patient update, an LZ location, etc. could end up not being heard and may very well cause some serious problems for ALL involved, including the INNOCENT victims we're SWORN to protect! On a side note, the area the CFFD / NSVAC is in is touchy when it comes to radio communications as it is, the last thing they need is to be covered by some jerk who obviously needs something better to do. Good post Cutty - I felt the same way you did!
  17. Verplanck still has a Hahn, I believe it is Engine 128. I can't remember what year it is...
  18. DFFD - from what I hear from TFD members, YES, L37 will remain. TL78 will be a 2nd Truck Company, replacing Washington Engine's current E78. I spoke to some fellas from TFD this weekend, it sounds as though they did their homework designing this rig. I was told that consultants were brought in to help design it and to justify it. After speaking to these guys I can understand the need for a second aerial in Tarrytown. Good luck with it - I hope you have the best of luck with it.
  19. Anyone is better then watching Carson Daly.... Conan is the funniest - not a big fan of Leno or Letterman.
  20. A little something for the northwest part of the County to laugh at. http://www.big-boys.com/pictures/picture1169.html Is this a photo shoot from the recent "Springvale Girls Gone Wild" series? #-o :pelvic_thrust: :D/
  21. If there is such a tool as a blog, I will put in for it in the next budget.....
  22. Deepest thoughts & sympathy to the Lund family. Is this considered an LODD?
  23. I'm taking a trip out to California - and eliminating this world of that state's never-ending stupidity and piss-poor judicial system. Anyone want to join me on this quest??? :chainsaw:
