We're still in the process of fine-tuning our actual Rehab SOG. We carry cases of water and Gatorade on the Rescue, and for the most part, the 3 Engines and TL44. R18 carries a FineMist(?) cooling fan as well. We also bring in 2 Ambulances to the scene and doff the gear so everyone can take a breather. The last fire we had (7/18) was a hot and humid night, and Rehab was essential for those of us working inside. On a side note - the Montrose FD helped out by running back to their firehouse and getting us water, and Buchanan FD U12 had some which was a blessing. No shame in calling for more help in this weather, remember, our safety and health is priority #1!

Chances are you're describing the Knox Box tones. Another thing you could be hearing is some units switching the channels on their radios via their DTMF handie-talkie. Nice thing to have in case you need to change a channel on a base station from the field.

ALS, you hit the nail on the head. But, there are a few places in our district I hope to never encounter a fire at. Metro-North Harmon Yards Buildings 6 & 14. Bldg. 6 is that very large building you can see from Route 9. It's a machine / diesel repair shop with trains in it, chemicals, etc. Bldg. 14 is a storage facility with God knows what in it. Half Moon Bay & Discovery Cove developments. All of these are light-weight wood-frame condos. To add to the headache, they are on the Hudson River. Get a fire in one of these cocklofts and it's on a windy day...... ](*,) Every Shopping Center in Croton. Over the years we have had fires in most of them, and from the other calls we do at them, I can just say this - $hitholes! Crap is stored all over the place, many modifications have been made, the list goes on. The Danish Home for the Aged. This place has had a fire in the past - the entire place is small! The halls are about 3' wide, barely wide enough to fit the EMS stretcher. It's all carpeted, wallpaper, etc. Hudson National Golf Course This place is on top of a huge hill, is surrounded by trees, and is stone with slate roof. It's locker rooms are all mahogany wood, laquered up and ready to burn. The kitchen is huge, etc. etc. Last, and by no means least - Sky View Nursing Home. This facility overlooks Route 9 and the Hudson River. It is a 5 story Nursing and Rehab Center with 220 beds. It is situated below 2 parking areas, making aerial access difficult. The effort to move the occupants alone will probably drain our initial alarm. Over the years I have done 100's of EMS and fire calls here, and everytime I look around and take in any changes in the layout I can. Take the time to drive around your districts and learn the potential problems in it. Water supply, aerial access, poor construction, occupancies and hose lays are all things to consider.

Good topic to bring up 2503. Not only is the CAD system at 60 Control not used to it's fullest potential, but the entire list of services that can be provided from 60 Control are under used. Several Departments have automatic response assignments for various reasons. Some have special assignments for specific buildings or locations, specific times of the day, types of incidents, etc. A good example I will use is one I worked on myself - Croton. Once an IC reports a working fire or "10-75" to 60 Control, the CAD will recommend a FAST, Cascade, EMS, Medic and if needed, 3 Tankers. Problem we have is that our Chiefs don't know this, even though they asked for it to be done. Other Departments take advantage of this as well, and it seems to work out quite well. As for sending someone when a Department fails to respond, I understand that there is in fact a time frame that if nobody is responding, then Mutual Aid will be sent. This applies to both fire and EMS. Now go dry off - I'm sure you're saturated!!

Some guy.....Stretz?! Familiar with him?!

A bump is kind of a reminder of something. Instead of re-typing the whole original post, just writing "bump" brings that topic up to everyone's attention again.

Brother, we could put all of our members in jobs down here, but the powers that be would STILL let our PD dispatch us. Where's my cable TV in my bedroom?! Damn cable guy.

Happy July everyone! As most of you know, I am the site manager for Washington Engine - Croton's website, and I spend a good deal of time making it worth visiting. The main things people like about the site are the news, alarms and photo sections. I can provide the news and alarms, but I am looking for more photos. If any of you have any photos, new or old, that I can post on our site, please PM me or e-mail them to me. I appreciate any help, and will give you the credit you deserve. Much appreciated, have a good 4th! www.engine119croton.org

The $hitter-Shimmy?!

Peekskill's Station 5 and Station 3 are actually the same building. Columbian Engine 131 is downstairs on Crompond Road, and Washington Engine 133 is upstairs on South Division Street. Another interesting item.... Columbian Engine (131) used to share it's quarters with Columbian Hose (132) before E132 moved to Station 4 behind the Beach Shopping Center.

Inward opening bathroom stall doors. Humidity. The lack of good TV. Blue light law discussions. Enough already!!!! ](*,)

Putnam only has cross-band repeaters for 46.38 & 155.205 in the western side of that county - I don't think you will pick them up from New Rochelle. Rockland has several repeaters linking to 46.18 and 46.08. I can get you the info, or you can visit www.fordyce.org for the info.

There's no "re-toning" - it is a retransmitter atop Northern Westchester Hospital that records the call being broadcast on 33.96 and 46.26, that replays it again on 33.96.
-
The North County News just did a piece on this... I love Cold Stone! Beward the cake batter ice cream, got an e-mail saying it was linked to illness out west. I also like the Blue Pig in Croton, and the Ice Cream Cafe in Peekskill. And, I love old school, so Carvel still is a favorite of mine, especially on WEDNESDAYS!!! Finally, a GOOD TOPIC to DISCUSS!!!!
-
MKFD is in fact simulcast on 33.96 and 46.26. You hear 33.96 after the 46.26 because they have a retransmitter atop the hospital (I think) that replays the call we just dispatched. Nice gadget, but hard to find nowadays.

Genereally speaking, doesn't SP run at least four units in the Cortlandt area?
-
All Croton Engines carry a class D extinguisher. I wonder if any of our "old-timers" can provide us with an incident or two that prompted them to put them on all 3 pumpers.
-
I like to consider EMS as "ABUSED." Those of you working in the system are great, but the truth is what it is...... the system is grossly abused!!!
-
ENOUGH ALREADY!!!!!
-
Pehaps, just perhaps... The Town of Cortlandt could work an agreement with Buchanan PD to cover more area in the Montrose / Verplanck region. And, perhaps, the T of C could also make arrangements with the Croton PD to cover the same areas the Croton FD & EMS cover. That would ease some of the burden on SP and WCPD. Good article Rob, saw it in the NCN today.
