Careful with that comment. If we could check the "BS" level of every patient and treat what we find, then quite a few of our "BS" calls wouldn't require transport. In all honesty, being able to check the blood sugar levels of patients is a great idea, HOWEVER I think it is vital for those of us on the BLS level to not be "lured" into using machines for everything. More and more people are buying the Monitors with the pulse oxymeters and NIBP units in them. And, sadly, so many EMTs rely on these things rather then their own skills to assess patients. I think if we start checking sugar levels with machines / devices, we'll lose another skill that many EMTs are already lacking - ASSESSMENT!

I recently got an e-mail from this group. After giving it some debate, I opened it and found this link, http://www.firememorial.org - and I am wondering, does anyone know anything about this group? Are they a real group? I'm familiar with the National Fallen Firefighter's Foundation and even other groups like the MacBoston guys - but I've never heard of this group. Any of y'all know anything?

#1 - 1191stdue said "6+ firefighters." He didn't say six. I can attest to what he says because we are on the same team. The more the merrier right? Unless you go to certain towns where they actually criticize you for having too many people. #2 - The lack of fireground accountability is and it appears will always be our own worst enemy. Do we use it? How well do we use it and when do we actually use it? After the MAYDAY? No good! It's past the time for the County's Departments to start using ONE accountability system. #3 - If you don't believe in FAST / RIT / FART - whatever it is called, then I suggest taking the FAST class given by NYS. It opened my eyes (everytime I took it) to some new tactics and some new theories that we have incorporated into our training and our SOGs. Bottom line, whether it is a FAST, extra manpower, extra rigs, etc. - you can always cancel the resources if you don't need them, but you shouldn't wait until it is too late.

Good topic to bring up. I am sure that by now we are all aware that OSHA requires a "Two In/Two Out" rule for incidents where personnel are operating in IDLH conditions. If your Department is still not dedicating personnel to the rescue of your own you should be ashamed of yourselves - period. As far as using personnel from within, if you have it go for it. I don't think there is any Departments who can say they don't need help, with some exceptions. We developed not only a FAST but created SOGs that specify what our Ic is required to do. Our SOG states that for all confirmed structural fires that a Mutual Aid team is to be called, and until the arrival of this team we assign personnel to this task. To the best of my recollection, our IC usually looks to our FAST "boss" to take care of this. Responding as a FAST? You better be quick to get on the road and to get on the scene. I hate the fact that certain agencies continue to play the political game in 2006, regardless of the safety of the personnel. If your neighbors have a FAST, why not call them? If they are notorious for a slow response or a lack of personnel, then not only should they be cut from your Mutual Aid plan, but the powers that be in that agency should inform their Mutual Aid agencies of the deficencies. We may not get called to a district we border for whatever reason, but we have to drive through it to get to another district that we run primary to - ? As far as I'm concerned, if you are worried about not getting called to someone's next "big one," then bottom line you are an a$$hole. Feel free to disagree with me, or even to hate me, but if you base your Mutual Aid on "getting called by the busier guys," then step down and let someone run your Department that is more concerned with the safety of your personnel!!!! If we never got called 3 towns away because they call someone closer I could care less. We're there for ourselves first, then our neighbors, and, if needed, beyond. This is a topic very near and dear to me. I hate many other things that go on in "FAST land," but I will save that for another thread and another day."

1981 Chevy Citation. Bought it from neighbors for $50.00. It was a POS, but it got me from point a to point b. On some occassions, getting from one place to the next required popping the clutch. The guys from CFD probably remember the car well, considering I hit the tree next door to the firehouse about 6 times because I couldn't get the hang of braking. "No Room" definitely remembers it, his wife would hear me tearing a** up Irving for a fire call and he knew we had one. :-) This car also became victim to a Hurst Tool drill.

You're kind of angry, aren't you? You are entitled to the same benefits the rest of us are. I, personally, like to come on here to see what's happening, perhaps learn something and occassionally, when I can, answer some questions. But to log in and see you and others bashing our humble host, you not only piss on his efforts and his DREAM, but you waste the time of dozens of educated, dedicated and professional people who come here for the same reasons I do. I brought up something that was bothering me a few weeks back. It turned into a fight where I not only got eaten up publicly, but I also got private harrassments and threats. So don't think for a minute that I am not up on what is happening, because I am. (Sorry 'bout that, Mr. Bravo) Keep your mean comments and personal attacks to yourself and the firehouse you belong to. We all get mad, we all know politics and "micro-managing" are parts of the fire service destruction process, but if we don't stick together what do we have? And, by the way, I not only think that the FDMV is undermanned and poorly managed from City Hall, but I feel that several other Departments in WC are at the mercy of the pencil-pushers - career and volunteer. Meanwhile, it never seems like the Police Departments have these uphill battles - why is that? Rant over. "Where's the Tylenol?"

A quint, by definition, has; An aerial A proper compliment of ground ladders A pump A tank A certain amount of fire hose. Within Westchester is a great number of quints. I don't feel that posting that list here is appropriate, and I am pretty sure there is a list somewhere within these forums. My FD has a quint. It has two 1 3/4" preconnects and one 2 1/2" preconnect. We roll the Tower on all structural calls, which works out great for us. It has a generator, numerous flood lights, fans, saws, etc. etc. etc. On more then one occassion TL44 has been used to pump on some of the narrow streets in our district where fitting an engine and a truck becomes problem-some. As for Yorktown's new L51 - I am glad to see that they went with a quint - they are so useful that to not get one is almost a waste nowadays. Of course, I see some exceptions in Departments with multiple aerials / truck companies where people are dedicated to doing the truck work and the engines do engine work. Our FD has 3 engine, 1 Truck and 1 Rescue company and we all pitch in and do a little of everything. Over and out....

I like these... "I'm a volunteer, I don't have to do that." "It's going to be a false alarm like it always is." "I don't do training lectures." "It's his/her turn to be Officer." "Vote for him, the other one is worse." "We need more meetings then drills or nobody will come around." And my #1 favorite.... Is when other members or even other companies KNOW they have issues with manpower and training but would rather get pissed when help from other companies / departments pitch in. Get the job done!!!!! Stop hiding in the shadows thinking all is fine - it isn't! I don't think there is a single outfit that doesn't have either a training or a manpower issue. Spend less time at parades and parties - spend more time drilling and learining. And lastly, spend less time going to meetings and association meetings - and go to the firehouse and pitch in! Rant out....

A couple of things come to mind... 1. I get tired after eating turkey. How did she stay awake to consume 10 pounds of it? 2. As she said, turkey is dry as hell. How did she swallow all of that - by washing it down with gravy? Did it also include the fixins' commonly assosciated with turkey day? 3. That's a lot of grilled cheese. I am going out on a limb here and guessing that she isn't lactose intolerant. 4. Rumor has it that she once ate a live baby and commented, "tastes like chicken." 5. Following all of her comments she darts off into el crapperio to set the world record for speed vomiting. Be well....

Ferg - what's the deal with the striping? It's cool looking, I'm just curious what made you guys go that way...... Good luck with the rigs, they look sharp and appear to have a substantial and successful future ahead. With the new E91, will this change your assignments? One last thing, R47 looks like one of the best rescue/squad type rigs I've seen, let me know when there's going to be a wetdown so I can check it out in person.

Question for everyone... I'm trying to avoid drifting from the subject at hand, but this is somewhat related. How do you feel about appartus responding with a driver only? Any opinions? I think if it is a combo department that rolls with one that there is a potential risk that nobody else may come out. I think, again this is my own opinion, a minimum of 2 should be on apparatus. This way the driver has another pair of eyes and ears to make the response and return safer. Thoughts? Opinions?

Croton Fire Department 2005 = 947 Total Incidents (Up 8.3%) 2005 = 630 EMS Incidents (Up 8.2%) 2005 = 317 Fire Incidents (Up 8.6%) Not sure of the other Company totals, however... 2005 Station #2 was 190 Incidents (An increase of 8.6%.)

Croton FD had all three Engines, Tanker 10, Rescue 18 and an EMS crew on for most of the day. TL44 was not placed on standby, but I am told that personnel were on hand if needed.
