  1. A 10-second warning? How long should a cop wait after providing fair warning? An hour, two maybe. Ten seconds is plenty of time to either submit or decide as a perp that you want to take this to the next level. I'm tired of hearing about any deaths that resulted from a Taser. The article you referenced also cited Meth intox and long term drug use. This meant, with out a Taser, the cops have to wrestle hand to hand with this IV drug abuser, who, until proven otherwise have Hep C and HIV. There is a reason every single TASER lawsuit ever filed has ultimately been dismissed, as this one will too. Think of this. With the Taser option, how many other perps would have been shot, as that was the next viable option in the use of force continuum? Say out of 1000 shocks, one guys dies. Tragic, sure, I suppose. But without Tasers, PD might have had to shoot literally hundreds of those 1000, causing significantly more deaths.
  2. This longer article adds little new, pertinant information, other than the guys size. And that particular information only lends credibilty to the argument that he could have been a serious threat to EMS and PD's safety. Not that small guys and girls can't cause trouble, but add in this patient's size... As the other posters said, your safety is number one.
  3. This article is so poorly written and light on details, it's impossible to determine if the use was justified or not.

  5. Just a side note. I believe some on here are confusing a PBT (Portable Breath Test) with a Chemical Breath Test (CBT). The PBT are field estimates, roadside, not admissible in Court other than as a "Positive" or "Negative" finding. The actual figure that appears means very little, as they are not calibrated. However, if properly cared for, can be very accurate. The new models even acknowledge "mouth alcohol" problems, which older units do not. The PBT is nothing more than an additional field sobriety test. The Chemical Breath Test is completed at the station (or certain mobile DWI's units) which are calibrated, require a certified operator, and provide a SPECIFIC, ACCURATE reading. The most common units are the Datamaster or the Draeger 7110 MarkIII PS: I speak from experience, having made on the order of roughly 400 DWI arrests in the past five years or so.

  7. You can find negative articles about ANYONE. Police, Fire and EMS included. We all see them posted here all the time. Just cause a firefighter somewhere was an arsonists, we don't label every firefighter. I see them as generally harmless and have some potential. As I said earlier, I'm sure somewhere, at sometime, some perp thought twice about doing something because these guys were hanging around.
  8. While I agree, criminal prosecution is doubtful. I am guessing he didn't need to identify the specific incidents, and without those, you have no criminal case. And as for Fox, par for the course.
  9. Even if they're just 'annoying' perps, it's better than nothing. If their presence deters even one incident (which I'm sure it has), it's worth it, since it doesn't cost the public anything.
  10. http://timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp...wsdate=6/3/2008 Anyone have experience watching these Arson K9's work? I know we have one locally. I'm curious what protection the dogs get if they enter burned out structures. We won't send our K9's anywhere their feet can get cut up.

  12. Your right. NYSP does not use MC's for ANY patrol functions. Only special details. Of the roughly 114 line of duty deaths in the 91 year history of the SP, more than 50% are a result of MC accidents. Due to that fact, they were eliminated from any traditional patrol function years ago.
  13. Ah yes, this age old argument. If those donut eaters would just learn their place!
  14. I use it if I'm out of the car and not carrying a portable. It comes in handy.

  16. To complicate it even further, the State Police has four distinct units in the building, all separated form each other, both in location and function. On the lowest level, you have TMC, who handles cell 911, E-911 from the towns of Cortlandt, Somers, North Salem, Lewisboro, and Pound Ridge. Also, they handle all radio communication for SP Zone 3 (Cortlandt, Mohegan Lake, Somers, Lewisboro, Pound Ridge and Hawthorne patrols). Then you have the HELP Truck Program, manned by SP personnel. They coordinate the HELP Trucks on the highways and respond to major traffic incidents in the region. Then on the 1st floor, you have "SP Hawthorne". The patrol and BCI aspects of a traditional barracks. It is run by a Sergeant/Station Commander. Lastly on the 2nd floor you have Zone 3 HQ. It is manned by a Capt, a Lt, four Zone Sergeants and a secretary. They are in charge of all Zone 3 stations.
  17. New Rochelle - Injured Officer transported with escort to Jacobi today. Anyone know specifics?
  18. That's a good point. In reality, should the FD be dispatched on every disabled vehicle and property-damage accident? Essentially that's all this call was, no? If sufficient resources are attending to the incident, what could the rationale be for calling additional resources just for the sake of doing so?
  19. Was a FD response required. Or was the WCPD response adequate. If the situation was being handled by the WCPD units, why dispatch the FD? On the other hand, was there more to the incident then is outlined in the IA? Was there some aspect where FD was needed?
  20. No proper PPE? Typical, so many responders do not consider car-fires to be real-fires. Why is that?
  21. There's really no precident for local PD's to allow him to do that, unless he is employed by them. And I think your mixing up the Minister story with the 1997 Mayor story. Two different incidents.
  22. Arrested, but later released. No charges filed.
