  1. There is always a danger in labeling entire groups by the actions of a few. Those in emergency services should know that better then anyone. The media always sensationalizes that linkage. Look at the following examples. Anyone think they are representative of us in general? Below are three examples for each profession. They are all recent and took about 2 minutes to retrieve. My point is, I don't think any of these individuals below truly represent us as a whole? Do you? However, it's going to be these winners who make the news and provide a basis for the public to form a general opinion of us. An opinion that may take a very long time to correct. And, while going down this slippery slope, should we discuss those who have committed atrocities in the name of Christianity? People like Timothy McVeigh, Anders Behring Breivik in Norway, Eric Robert Rudolph who purport to use Christianity as rational for their crimes don't represent the other 99.9999% of Christians, do they? I suspect they do not.
  2. Hey John, thanks for the run-down. Were all those resources requested, or was there any freelancing going on? If they were all requested, was it because there was some reason to believe there were more victims than ended up materializing?
  3. Your 100% right. There are multiple examples analogous to the one you reference. That's why every time someone on this forum references "liability" on this site, I challenge them to be specific. Courts have long held nulla positions extended to ES. EDIT: abaduck: Just to add a link, the case your referencing is Warren v. District of Columbia (444 A.2d. 1, D.C. Ct. of Ap. 1981)
  4. Looks like they ran out of funding when the truck was half-finished.
  5. Well, in that respect, college is no different than a lot of aspects in life! I still believe education offers more positives than negatives, but your free to disagree.
  6. Well, I'm sorry you feel that way. If you perceive being insulted or attacked during the course of an otherwise benign discussion and debate, I don't know how else to handle it other than ignoring you. If you don't want to engage in banter in these forums, why post here to begin with?
  7. It's not arrogance, it's sarcasm. Let me ask this hypothetical question. If you drop out of college, do you think it more likely you end up in the ranks of the Gates/Jobs/Branson's of the world, or some nameless guy who we'll never even knew existed? I equate that to ignoring opportunities to save for retirement because you know one of these days, you'll have the winning Mega-Millions ticket!
  8. Yes, great point. Those three people are truly representative and average examples.
  9. It might "still be a loss", but it's important information to have when your contemplating your next step. Imagine this, the vote is 600 to 599 versus 2500 to 100? You really don't think that makes a difference for strategy sake? I do.
  10. An important caveat is, as you point out, your still pursuing a fire career. Many, many people pursue fire and law enforcement careers, without ever achieving their goal. There are always going to be more applicants then vacancies. Having a solid education, backed with a college degree, is not a bad "back-up" plan, in the event that for one reason or another, your not able to live out your dream of ES.
  11. Our agency euthanasizes deer (and other wildlife) pretty frequently. With deer, one shot to the head is all that is necessary.
  12. APD has been holding these events for years here in NYC and other cities. If you miss this one, they'll be back.
  13. Are you kidding? If the deer was still able to run in traffic after being shot 13 times, and able to outrun pursuing officers, he probably never needed to be euthanized in the first place! Let me ask you this, how many deer have you euthanized roadside?
  14. A handgun works fine for deer. A shotgun isn't necessary.
  15. That was a different issue. Unrelated to this.
  16. Exactly Tom. There's lots of good people out there that do hard and dangerous jobs, often with low pay, no benefits, and none of the protections we enjoy, both physical and legal. But, in the end, all the jobs need to be done. Most of those in Emergency Services who put themselves up on a pedestal can be identified a mile away! The only one's who hold us in the highest regard is the media, and that's usually only when own of us screws up.
  17. Let me disclose I am not defending this decision. I'm just as opposed to it as you are, but that being said... The original plaintiff in this case was, none other than the EEOC. Ironic, isn't it? So, to now say that the proposed solution, as outlined by the Judge, violates EEOC rules seems a little unsupported, no? In essence, you are arguing that the EEOC sought injunctive relief, which they obtained through summary judgment, which somehow concurrently violates their own standards. Doesn't really make sense, does it? For a pretty easy to read analysis of this, feel free to check out this article. The article also addresses the difference between the Vulcan case and the New Haven case.
  18. That's correct, but that statement has no applicability to this case whatsoever.
  19. What part exactly are you saying "is in fact illegal"?
  20. Yes, in short, we do. The juveniles are only at Lincoln Hall caused they have already screwed up. To allow them to offend on top of that and go unpunished, serves no purpose. There should be consequences. And no one is going to end up in jail over this.
  21. So, BLS EMS transports are done by Vanguard M-F 6x6, and HVAC on weekends and at night. But all ALS is from the MICU through an ALS QRV system? Is that right?
