As an add on to "bad box" comment. Last month FDNY put another squad into service. It's Squad 8 on Staten Island. It's in the quarters of E154. E154 was disbanded when Squad 8 went into service. FDNY now has a total of 8 squads. As eluded to in most of these responses, FDNY squads are enhanced engine companies. They run with an engine and carry a full-assortment of extrication and rescue equipment. Each squad has a 2nd Piece called a Haz-Mat Tech unit. Whenever there is Haz-Mat call anywhere in the city, a squad (with their second piece), Haz-Mat Company 1, and the Haz-Mat Battalion are assigned. Manning on the FDNY squads is 6 (1 officer & 5 firefighters).

In the early 1940's, FDNY had a couple of Squad companies. They were manpower units only. They reported to incidents and were utilized for whatever was needed. In the 1950's through the late 1960's FDNY Squad Companies were equipped with step vans. They carried basic truck company tools and were again utilized for whatever functions were needed. In the late 1960's, The squads were assigned pumpers and responded as engine companies. Eventually the Squads were disbanded. In 1977, Squad Company 1 was reestablished in the former quarters of Engine 269 which had been disbanded. They were assigned a pumper and also carried Truck Company Tools. They were used for whatever the Chief needed when they arrived at a fire scene. In 1990, Squad 41 was established in the former quarters of Engine 41 in the Bronx. They were assigned a pumper and they along with Squad 1 were part of Special Operations Command. in addition to engine company equipment, they carried truck company tools as well as Hurst Tools, Air Bags and some other rescue related gear. In the late 1990's Engine 18, 61, 252, 270 and 288 became Squad Companies and all squad personnel were trained to the Haz Mat and Rescue Technician level. All Squads were then assigned a second rig (step van) designated as Haz Mat Support Units.

The New York Fire Patrol used this building after Ladder 49 left. It was the quarters for Fire Patrol # 6 from 1949 until 1955.
In 1955 the NYFP closed Patrol 6.

Old Tarrytown firehouse was originally a Masonic Lodge building. House Hope Hose on left as you faced the building. To the right was Conqueror Hook & Ladder. The police were located in the rear of the building. Detectives got a lot of drives! Lodge was located on 2nd floor.

The ladder has 3 also. The Assistant Chief is the tenth person on the shift. Currently, this is still our minimum. That fourth guy on each rig makes a huge difference.

Best of luck to the NFD. Happy to see the politicians are speaking up.

If my math is correct, that's 25% of the staff on the floor! I'd assume they'd keep 3 at the sub-station and then drop to 3 on the HQ engine, 2 on the ladder, plus the Assistant Chief. Totally unacceptable. Before looking it up, I figured a city of 28K in 5 square miles would be running 3 or 4 engines and would have about 17 or 18 per shift. How are they going to cover a CITY with 9 guys?
  25. Newburgher liked a post in a topic by BFD1054 in Looming Layoffs in the City of Newburgh FD
Here we are again, facing layoffs in the City of Newburgh FD.  TWELVE firemen are on the chopping block this time around.
That amounts to (1) less fireman on each piece of apparatus on each tour.
Anybody who has operated on a fire ground knows how detrimental that is.
It angers me to see this happening yet again. I'm angry because several of the firemen facing layoffs are my friends.  What makes me more angry is that the City has done little to nothing to prevent this from happening. This should not have come as a surprise. Steps should have been taken in an attempt to avoid these layoffs at all costs. That did not happen.
Ive said it before and I'll say it again. Hats off to these gentlemen, all of the NFD. They are some of the most aggressive firemen I have ever seen work and have had the pleasure of working with them.
I truly hope for a miracle to keep these men on the job. They deserve it, their fellow members deserve it and the City deserves the proper protection.
Once again, Senator Sean Patrick Maloney has impressed me. This man has continuously had the backs of the NFD and its members. He has faught for them before and continues to do so today. Let's hope he can help once again.
