  6. Hey guys, i took the FAST class at Camp Smith on February 26th/27th and it was awesome! The instructors were Tom Macpherson (City of Peekskill FD/ALS), Jeff Dygert (City of Auburn FD) & Erik Verfuss (City of Cortland FD). The instructors were great, we learned a hell of a lot, but they kept it fun at the same time. I would reccommend getting a decent nights sleep & to not go out partying all night. It is a pretty physical class & you will be pretty drained by the end of the day, especially the 2nd day when there are more evolutions! Word to the wise, try not to get teamed up with the heavier guys in the class because you will have to drag/push them during large area searches & drag/push them up a flight of stairs! But then again, if you can drag & pull the hevy guys, you can definately handle the skinny ones! And its always good to challenge yourself because you don't know what you'll be faced with on the fire ground! We had about 10 guys from Bedford Hills, 6 from Putnam Valley, 4 or 5 from Brewster, 1 from Larchmont, 1 from Croton & me and another guy from Buchanan. We all had a great time & learned a whole lot. It was also nice to work with guys that you wouldn't normally work with. I would highly reccommend the FAST class to ANY firefighter, even if your department doesn't operate a FASTeam!
  7. In Buchanan we run on EMS assists with Cortlandt VAC. We are toned out during daytime hours (usually 7am-4pm or whenever requested) & usually only on life-threatening calls. The policy seems to change every few years though lol. At one time, we responded to all EMS calls within the village 24/7. Then we responded to all EMS calls between 7am & 5pm. Now we only respond on life-threatening calls between 7am & 4pm as i stated before. Our 1st due EMS rig is our Rescue, which carries a BLS bag, AED, back-boards, collars, stokes & some other equipment. When the Rescue is OOS or tied up, we'll respond with our Rescue/Pumper which carries basically the same equipment minus the AED. If the Rescue is OOS, we will place the AED on the engine. I think its a pretty good system for us because as we all know, it can be hard to get a crew during the daytime, especially if the EMS agency is already on a run & you have to get a 2nd crew. We require that our active members have at least CPR/AED to ride on EMS assist's & all non-qualified members stay back at the firehouse, unless lift-assistance is requested. We have 9 or so EMT's in our company & the majority of them are pretty active. 4 out of our 7 officers are EMT's which is also helpful. We've been averaging 1 or 2 EMT's on each EMS assist lately which is a big help. The Rescue will roll with a minimum of 2 members (if they have the minimum requirements) & the only members allowed to respond to the scene are our officers. I happen to be an officer & an EMT, so if i don't make it to the rig, i will head to the scene to assist. Some of our members are also members of Cortlandt VAC, so they know the layout of their rigs & where their equipment is located, which is also helpful. We are also in the process of setting up in-house training with my company & Cortlandt VAC. We want Cortlandt VAC to come to our HQ with a rig & show our guys where things are located & also discuss what is expected of us & how we can further help them on EMS runs. Like i said, all in all i believe that it is a good system & has worked very well for us. Good luck Briarcliff with your new EMS response plan, it definately won't hurt, thats for sure! Your FD runs your EMS, you should use that to your advantage! Try to get the FF's & EMS personnel together & do some drills so that the FF's aren't just standing around being useless on calls! Anyway, good luck again & same to any other department that may start a similar program. As we all know, EMS has really started to become a big part of the firefighting world, so take in as much as you can learn! Lt/EMT Michael Swankie Buchanan FD
  8. afd... This is the exam announcement from a past dispatchers exam. It has all the info/requirements, you may want to read it if you are interested! I didn't see anything on age requirements, although i just briefly skimmed through it. If i had to guess, i would say the minimum age would be 18 to be hired. You're best bet would be to talk to "JBE" here on the Network tofind out further info! Hope this helped you a bit! http://nyc.gov/html/dcas/pdf/firealarmdispatch.pdf
  9. Yeah 648, the white stuff means the green stuff to me too, but i'm with you on this one man!!! Enough is enough, i worked like 7 hours of OT last night chasing the snow all night. I missed 13 hours of double-time this past weekend, but to be honest, i could care less, i've had it with the snow!
  10. Yes, like everyone else, A$$holes are allowed to have opinions too! I will not knock this "author" for his thoughts on the movie, as it is only a movie review. But the comment about the WTC being a "pile of garbage" made me sick to my stomach! The terrorist attacks on 9/11/01 had nothing to do with Ladder 49, so he could have left that alone! And where is this guy from that he thinks firefighters are paid very well for their services lol? I don't know many guys that make a killing from being a firefighter, in fact many of them have second jobs to support their families! And for the FF's out there who do make a decent salary...good for them, they deserve it! So yes WAS967, you are correct in that this guy is entitled to his opionion, but we are also entitled to disagree with some of his statements. This guy also says that firefighters are no more heroic than office clerks or garbage men & he may be on to something. I would say the majority of firefighters don't believe that they are heroic either, they are just doing their job! So yes, the guy is entitled to his opinion & he wrote a movie review (and an in depth one it was), but we can still be upset with some of his comments.
  11. Good luck on the test tomorrow guys! I guess i lucked out when i took mine a few years ago, mine was at a high school right off of the BRP, just over the border. If you guys are serious about getting on the job with the NYPD, now is the time! I was told that the NYPD hired a huge ammount of PO's in like 1982 & for the following years as well. The people from that time have probably retired or are close to it. They would have their 20 years in, plus after September 11, there was a ton of OT, so those guys got to really boost their pensions! Anyway, good luck to all of you who are taking the test, get a good night sleep & give yourselves plenty of time to get to your testing sites!
  12. The residency deal threw me off too! I could be wrong, but i thought it was different for NYPD (and FD maybe)? I thought you had to live in NYC (the 5 boroughs), Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Rockland or Orange? Like i said, i could be wrong, but either way, its kind of silly! If you need to hire & people want the job & are willing to commute, whats the big deal? Like WAS967 said, how many NYPD members live within the 5 boroughs? And at a starting pay of $31,000, how could you afford to live within the 5 boroughs? Its just a shame that the people who deserve more $$$, don't get it (i.e. dispatchers, FF's, PO's, teachers, etc.). Anyway, still would be an awesome job dispatching for FDNY! I give alot of credit to the men & women behind the radios & switchboards for FDNY & any department for that matter! It can be a very stressful job & alot is riding on you at all times. Good luck to anyone who decides to give it a try!

  14. hudson...thats really good to hear, finally some good news out of that tragedy! Thanks for keeping all of us updated on his condition. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the firemen & their families that were affected by that horrific day. *On a side note...The New York Post had helped start the "Heroes Fund," in which all donations go to the families of the firemen either killed or injured on that "black Sunday." I was able to get my department to pledge some money & i am taking a collection from our members for the next month. At the end of the month, my company will cut a check & send it in to the Heroes Fund. Its a good way to help our brother firemen & their loved ones. Just thought i'd share that so maybe some other Westchester departments will doante, every little bit helps! http://www.ufalocal94.org/ufa_funds/heroes_fund.html

  18. LCFD968...I don't know about it Putnam, but our Fire Police get off on their reflective vests, flashlights & lighted wands lol! Forget getting them behind the wheel of this monster!!!
  19. Ashton Kutcher from "Punk'd" bought one, i saw it on tv one day. He was driving it all over L.A. The guy is dating Demi Moore, so i guess thats his idea of a mom-mobile to lug her kids all over town lol  . I can't see how just anyone can buy/drive one of these things, they're enormous!
  20. The new Engine-148 looks great guys! Best of luck to CFFD with the new rig! Hopefully it works just as good as it looks =D> .

  23. Wow, i feel totally out of the loop, i haven't checked this forum in awhile lol! I was going to make a post in regards to 60-Control dispatching Port Chester, thinking it would be a new topic, guess i was wrong. I've heard several Port Chester calls dispatched by 60 recently and they all seemed to run smoothly. Port Chester seemed like they did a decent job of dispatching, any major reasons for the switch? I do agree that a centralized dispatching center makes things alot simpler & easier to manage responses, especially in mutual aid cases. I also agree that Westchester should go to "plain-talk" as well, but thats another story. We all know that many people do not know many 10-codes or even worse, use the wrong ones at times, making things a bit confusing. We have guys in my firehouse that either don't know alot of 10-codes or have forgotten them & they will use "plain-talk" instead. Frankly, i could care less, as long as i know what rigs are on the road & i can understand whatever else is being transmitted. Anyway, we've beaten the 10-codes topic to death, so thats enough of that. Good luck to PCFD's on their switch to 60-Control! 60-Control is a great agency that is operated by highly trained professionals. I'm sure that there won't be any major problems with this switch & i hope all goes well, best of luck to both 60 & the PCFD!
