Hey 648...it figures that you'd be upset that the "vibrator" feature on your M4 wasn't working! LOL, just kidding Art. The silent alert is definately a good feature to have. Its good for two things; when you're in a quiet environment (work-place, church, place of business, etc.) or in a noisy environment where the audible feature may not be loud enough to hear. I work for the DPW & i didn't hear my pager go off at work today...thank god for the I-Page text messages on my Nextel =D> .

Congrats & good luck to all the new LMFD officers! Thats one hell of a line-up, a great group of guys! Its funny, i heard "2264" sign on for a call today and thought to myself "that doesn't sound like Joey (Mayer)" lol. This would explain why, didn't realize that there were new officers lol.

It just seems like Motorola keeps coming out with new Minitor pagers, but they just have different problems than the last ones. I have had the 1, 2, 3 & 4 Minitors & as stated, the II was probably the best they ever came out with. Thankfully i only had a M1 for a short time when i got in the department. They were horrible; bad reception & not to mention you needed a heavy-duty belt just to hold that bad boy up on your waist lol! Made a hell of a wheel chock lol. The II's were great, had one for the FD & still have one for my VAC & its the best. It has good reception & is durable as all hell. The III's sucked. I had one for my VAC...that lasted about a week, until i got my II back . I have a IV now (officers are issued them in my dept.). They're hit or miss. The reception can be great at times. I'm in Buchanan & i can pick up Port Chester & other southern depts. great, as well as depts. in the Northern County (Vista, S. Salem, etc.). The voice recorder feature is kind of useless if you ask me. As stated, it records for 30 seconds or so & it will record EVERYTHING in that 30 seconds lol. If you leave you're pager at home or in your car or whatever, you can come back and easily see if you have missed a call. A red light stays lit on the top of the pager & the pager will beep every few seconds until you push the recorder button or turn the pager off. This can come in handy i guess, but thats if it works. We have had quite a few problems with the M4's since we have got them, hopefully the 5's will be more promising!

als...you love that video, don't you lol? That was a major no-no #-o . Alsfirefighter, i wish you could show the video of the FD Chief attempting to ignite a fire in an aquired structure, thats a real good one!

You gotta love the 10-House combo of ENGINE-10/LADDER-10!!! Their new rigs look amazing! I also like ENGINE-35 (Harlem): Its my buddies house and i was down there recently, but both E35 & TL14 had spares in service lol! But over the front intake on E35 it reads: "Add water here" I love that lol. One of the guys in the house even wrote that saying on masking tape & put in on the front of the spare while they had it lol! ENGINE-88 (Bronx): "First Due at the Zoo." I also love how the "88" on the bumper & doors is in gold, as well as the gold stars on the rig. I know a guy out of this house & he always sends me tee & sweat shirts & patches when they get new ones. I've always liked 88-Engine, in part because of the guy i know & it was the first FDNY firehouse i ever really visited. I also like L-38 which is housed with 88-Engine on Belmont Ave. in the Bronx. L-38 also has stars all over the rig, simple, but it looks nice. I liked the old L-38, the 1991 Seagrave rear-mount with the raised cab, very cool! SQUAD-18: Just a real nice looking rig (plus it has a Q) lol. I also love E54 & L4: They're both real nice rigs & a great motto: "Never missed a performance" (Broadway area).

Just a little info on the topic of Federal Q's. If i am not mistaken, the Q on Squad-18 in Manhattan was donated by the Elmsford Fire Department in memory of FF Andy Fredericks. He was the first speaker at the now annual Elmsford FD seminar & an integral part in getting the Seminars off the ground. I believe that he always loved the Q siren (as most of us do) & as a tribute, the Elmsford FD donated one to the members of Squad-18, where Andy worked. I'd have to say hands down, as many of you have said, cost is probably the #1 reason why FDNY rigs are not outfitted with Q's. They go for 2 or $3,000 if i am not mistaken. I love the Q as much as the next guy, but they may not be the best choice for the FDNY. As DMA stated, the sound can "bounce" around and throw people off. Aside form the cost, Federal Q's are a little too much for FDNY rigs IMO. But i will admit, i love when i catch a FDNY rig with that beautiful, unmistakable, chrome Q on the bumber lol! I was at the Auto show at the Javits Center recently and ENGINE-34 drove by and it had a "true" Q on the bumper, definately impressive!

Its soo weird how these things are worked out. In my area, there is a road called Reynolds Lane. Houses & businesses there have a Buchanan mailing address, but they are in the Montrose Fire District. The Montrose FD has to respond past Buchanan Firehouse & into Peekskill (Welcher Ave. area) to get to Reynolds Lane lol. Never understood that, but thats the way it works & i'm sure many districts have similar areas like this.

WOW, this is my first time reading this thread, but its awesome!!! Congrats NYTruckie for starting an excellent thread where everyone has gotten a chance to vent lol! This was a perfect thread for alsfirefighter to reply to, as we all can see lol! Sorry als, nothing negative, just knew you'd love to jump on this. Als, again, excellent reply! You never cease to amaze, whether it be a post about fire or ems, or posts such as this, you always say it how it is brother lol! WolfEMT....WOW, i thought i was the only one who wondered why Jersey drivers love to slam on their brakes for no reason lol! I travel on I-287 (and other NJ roadways) usually once a week & i observe first hand the crappiest driving ever! You'll be crusing along (in the left lane of course ), doing about 70mph & the moron in front of you gives a nice brake check & you're going from 70 to about 50 lol. You look ahead and see nothing, you get in the middle lane and see that there is about a mile of open road in form of the moron & wonder what the hell was he/she braking for? Sorry, but god does that ever piss me off! Also, on the topic of Jersey. Is it me or do Jersey drivers refuse to move into the slower lanes of traffic? Again, I-287 is a 65mph zone (for the most part), but people still love to do 55-60 in the left lane! When you approach them, they do not speed up & they don't move to the right, even when there are no vehicles to impinge on their lane-change! And yeah, they definately don't understand the whole move to the right for emergency vehicles thing either. But then again, most people don't! Side note lol - i drove our Utility (cascade) truck out to Mohegan recently for a structure fire...god bless the men & women, career & volunteer of the Mohegan FD! We got called out at around 2:30 in the afternoon & what a nightmare Rt. 6 was! People were cutting me off left & right, moving to the left & just stopping wherever, gotta love it lol! Sorry, just venting. Thank god for alsfirefighter's EVOC course, it kept me form losing my mind & got us there safe lol! So i can't just say that Jersey drivers suck at pulling over for emergency vehicles...because its everywhere lol!

Personally, i only go lights & siren to the ER when i am told to (by ALS or the crew chief). Unfortunately, there are many people that insist on going l&s to the ER on EVERY call, no matter how minor it is. If we are transporting to Phelps, i will usually turn the lights on when we reach the Arcadian shopping center & ride the middle of the lanes. The reason for this is that the lanes are soo damn narrow that the rig barely fits & everyone wants to race around you. But thats really the only time i will use lights or siren when they may not be totally neccessary. In New Jersey however....My girlfriend goes to Rutgers University in New Brunswick & her apartment is in between St. Peters Hospital & Robert Wood Johnson University hospital (local trauma center i believe). When i say a good 90% of the ambulances that are en-route to the ER's use lights & siren, its no exageration! And it doesn't seem to matter what time of day or night it is or how much traffic there is. I've also noticed that whoever is driving the ALS fly cars that are following the rigs to the ER's tend to use their l & s, why is that? I can't even count how many times i have driven the ALS fly-car back to the hospital & i have never used the lights or siren. There is no reason for it. If the call is going ALS, i would hope that the Medic has all of his required equipment with him/her & i usually check with them before they take off. So there is no reason why the fly-car should be brought back to the ER code-3....big liability IMO! I'm pretty sure alsfirefighter would ring my neck if i was returning his medic car code-3 lol! Anyway, just my thoughts & observations.

Nope...just one CVFD. And yes, they fall under the Town of Cortlandt, but i don't believe the entire district is in Cortlandt. I know that they cover a pretty big area in Cortlandt, including the area of the "Rock-Cut" and all of Bear Mountain Bridge Rd. & the Annsville Circle. But the areas that border Putnam Valley & Garrison are the areas that are technically in Putnam County as far as i am aware and that is why they are dispatched by both 40 (Putnam 911 now?) & 60 Controls. Peekskill EMS covers the majority, if not all of CVFD's district. Maybe someone that has more knowledge of that area can add more or correct me if i am wrong. Hope my little bit of info could help.

This is never the news you want to hear. What a terrible tragedy! 42 is way to young to die. My thoughts and prayers go out to FF Brooks' family & friends & to the Montgomery FD. ocff75...please keep us all updated on services as well as if there will be any sort of fund set up for the family. This may seem like a dumb question.....What is the purpose of carrying an "off-duty" EMS shield? In all honesty, what is the purpose of carrying an EMS shield at all? If you are providing patient care, wheather you are on or off duty, a shield really doesn't mean much. Your State DOH EMT cert card is what you should be carrying. Anyone can really go get an EMS or FD shield made up, most places wouldn't question your credentials. If you have an "on-duty" shield, why couldn't you carry that? So i was just curious as to the purpose of "off-duty" shields? I too agree that this is a big waste of funds on the Citys part. You figure badges go for $40 or $50 each & how many EMT's & Paramedics are there that these will be issued to? Thats a whole lot of money being wasted in my opinion.

Watch it 648!!! Although i am sick of the snow as well, i really hate the rain!!! Working in the rain just plain sucks! Plus it is so depressing when it rains. At least if it were snow i could make some big $$$ on OT lol!

GUILTY, without a doubt!!!! Even if he were innocent, just look at him, hes a freak show! From the way he looks, acts and dresses, it just doesn't help his case! That man could have had any chick at one point & time (and probably still could), but instead he shares his bed with little boys!!! If thats not guilty, i don't know what is!!! Unfortunately, he'll probably settle out of court & never see a day of jail! Look at OJ....its all about $$$ & high-end lawyers!!!

Remember585....You had at least (1) light of every color on your car??? I don't believe that for a minute lol ! You definately always had the most obnoxious light shows around lol. I can see your old man lecturing you, but come on now, he didn't do so bad in the light show department himself! But at least his lights were all the same color lol! I too at one time had a green light as well as blue lights in my car. But now i have a brand new car and i really don't feel like having to mount a green light somewhere, especially when i won't really use it. The ambulance corps. is only a few blocks from my house & if i don't make the rig for a call, i won't lose sleep over it. The reason being is that if the rig gets out before i can get there, than thats a pretty good response by other members. Further more, it just means that a patient will be provided care in a short ammount of time, a definate plus. GPDexplorer...as you stated, yes, there are people out there who run both green & blue at the same time. There were people who are affiliated with a FD & a VAC and would buy a double-strobe & have (1) lens blue and (1) lens green. Technically, you are not supposed to do this & i believe you can be ticketed for it. I know in my area, the Fire Chief approached the VAC Captain & had him ask members to discontinue this practice. Its one or the other, run blue for fire, green for EMS or neither.

Just wanted to say that the YHFD Chili night was a good time! The food was great & i even won a tackle box/bag! I was told that the Youth members had a lot to do with organizing this event, so congrats to them, it was an obvious hit!
