  2. I thought everyone looked great, but the weather sucked as usual! It would have been nice if more companies stuck around longer, seemed a little dead at the end of the night. Guess the rain scares alot of people. Congrats Ossining on Best Overall, you guys looked great as usual, same to Croton, nice job! Personally, i think we (Buchanan) looked real good. I was proud of us, we had a decent ammount of guys in march for a company of our size. I know my engineer and a few others busted their a$$es on Engine-161 (1998 Sutphen). Guess it wasn't good enough, but we'll try again today at Croton! Its a beautiful day, so i hope we all have good turn-outs and a good time! Best of luck to everyone today in Croton!
  3. PVFD.... I'm not 100% sure of the parade route. I do know that Companies line up in the area's of Old Post Rd. South at the intersections of Truesdale Dr. & Morningside Dr. The parade route usually goes along Old Post Rd. & ends at Grand St. at the Summerfest street festival, near the Grand Street Firehouse (E118/TL44). Take Route 9 South to the Croton Point Ave. (Croton Train Station) exit. At the bottom of the exit ramp make a left onto Croton Point Ave. & go to the light (South Riverside Ave.). There will be an Exxon gas station on your left. Make a left onto S. Riverside Ave. & go to your next light (1 block). This will be Benedict Blvd. Make a right onto Benedict Blvd. and you'll start to see where all the companies are lined up. If you want a good place to watch the parade...I'd suggest standing near the High School on Old Post Rd. South. This is a nice area to watch the parade from, not to mention its only about 2 blocks from the end of the route & the Street Fest! As far as companies in attendance.... Its usually Buchanan, Montrose, Verplanck, Ossining, Peekskill, Mohegan, Briarcliff, Yorktown, Sleepy Hollow and so on. Those are just the ones i can think of.
  4. Pudge...you are correct! His name is Jack McGee. He was born & raised in the Bronx & was on the job in the Bronx as well. I am not too sure what company he was out of, but i believe he was on the job like 10 years before turning to acting. And yes, he was the E17 chauffer in Backdraft. Hes from the same neighborhood where my girlfriends' grandmother lives and she knows him & his family very well. If i'm not mistaken, he comes from a large Irish family, with some of his siblings being on the job (fire & PD), although i'm not 100% sure. There was a big article about him in Firehouse magazine within the last year or so.
  5. EJS...why settle man, take the probie chick & the engine, kind of like a gift set...from god lol!!! I like Tommy's ex-wife (cause shes hot), Jimmys widow (shes hot in a stripper sort of way), Tommy cause hes crazy & funny & because hes Dennis Leary! The younger guys in the house are funny too because they're all trying to be big players & the one is dumb as hell, but its funny. Tommys dad is a great character cause hes into drugs & hookers! I happen to like the Chief too, i believe he was also in Backdraft if i'm not mistaken.
  6. Haha, its all good 2371! You can't invite everyone, we all know that lol!
  7. Oh yeah, my bad, thanks Art! I can't seem to get it into my head that Cappriccio I & II are almost right next to each other lol!
  8. Anybody interested in seeing a sweet KME pumper should go to this wetdown! We used this rig in my Pump-Op's class not too long ago & its a real nice rig!
  9. Practicality & functionality! If your dept. has the money to buy $40-$50,000 Chiefs vehicles, more power to ya! But as stated, they do not put fires out! Some people feel that "the Chief" should have the nicest vehicle, and maybe so. But will he/she be there 100% of the time? In Buchanan, the Chief has a 1999 GMC Tahoe. Its perfect as far as size and compartment space. As a matter of fact, my Chief (ex), a probie FF, another Lt. & myself were in the Tahoe out in Somers when we got banged out for the Bannon Avenue apartments fire last February. It had plenty of room for us to fit comfortably & we even started to gear-up en-route! Our 1st Assistant Chief is assigned a 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport. This vehicle is way too small & had no room to mount the radios/siren/switches, so they are mounted on the passenger side of the middle console! We can't complain however because the vehilce was donated lol. Our 2nd Assistant Chief is assigned a 1992 Chevy Caprice that was donated to us by the Cortlandt Ambulance Corps. This car originally served as a Town of Cortlandt PD car. It got beat on pretty good & CVAC replaced the motor when they had it. Good news is that the motor still runs good, but the body is about to rust apart lol! At one time, i don't think any Chief in our Dept. had a vehicle. And when we finally got one, we only got one for the Chief of the Department. Personally, i like the idea of the pick-ups, especially BHFD & Croton 2081. Preferably, the 4-door cab would be better & definately with a cap on the bed. This way you'd have room for manpower & plenty of room for equipment. Plus you could use it to tow a boat or trailer if you have any. I actually like the Ford chassis with a utility body, almost like an ESU rig for a Chiefs vehicle. I believe its Scarsdale that got one not too long ago. Talk about compartment space! Also if looking at a pick-up, i would look into the extendo-bed's, where the entire bed will "pull-out" to better access equipment. I know a certain WC DES big-wig who has this in his personal truck and it is awesome! Makes everything so much easier! Hell, i even like the NYS OFPC Chevy van that is used by the instructors. That thing is awesome, has an extendo-bedwith all sorts of goodies, including full set of hydraulic tools! I see all this discussion about lights and such...why? Unless you're covering alot of highway, whats the purpose? A simple light-bar with simple lower-level warning will do. For lower warning, simple strobes in the tail-lights & front grille will more than do in my opinion. I see the Tarrytown Chiefs Expedition has one of those telescoping light towers on the roof, but for them it makes sense since they cover I-287. Again, practicality. Something simple with enough room for equipment & manpower would do just fine. As for the Hummers....waste, big time lol! Thet would be cool as hell to see one around here though! I know that the Seaside Heights, NJ FD ran a Hummer for awhile. The Chief told me they had to sell it because it cost too much to maintain!

  11. NYTruckie, definately a good idea!!! I'm sure most other people will agree as well. We have the Testing/Hiring section, but as you said, thats a broad listing of upcomming tests and such. It would be great to have such an area for us to discuss jobs & info about job details & what poeple like & dislike about them. Good idea Truckie!

  13. I don't eat chinese food that much anymore, but i do know of a few good places... Emperors Choice - Beach Shopping Center, Rt. 6, Peekskill. A real nice restaurant to take-out or eat-in. Chinese & Japanese food. - (914) 737-1888 Also, the Chinese restaurant on Washington St., Peekskill, across from Centenniel Hose Co. (E130). I can't think of the name right now, but they have great food too!
  14. Buchanan Engine Comapany has started to bring back our Sunday morning Pancake breakfasts. We had one last weekend and from what i understand we had about 50-60 people in attendance. I believe the prices are $5 for adults & $3 for kids. If i am ot mistaken, the menu includes pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage & some others. I'll get the upcoming dates & a better idea of the price and menu.
  15. If you're looking for Italian on the run.... Anthony's Pizza in the A&P shopping Center, Welcher Ave., Peekskill. They have the absolute best pizza & Italian food around, they've always got a decent crowd in there. The guys that run it are great, they're real nice & funny as hell! Also a must is... Capriccio I & II in Croton. They have excellent pizza and entrees. Capriccio I is in the center of town near the "dummy-light." Capriccio II is at 26 Maple Ave. in te shopping center (Dunkin Donuts, Blockbuster video). Its the Rt. 129 exit off of Rt. 9, near Croton Auto Park. Capriccio II - (914) 827-9117 & 827-9123
  16. Seth, i had mentioned Caruso's in an older food-related thread. I would definately reccommend going back for a round-two! The food is excellent & the people who run the place ar e real nice too! If i remember correctly, they even have a decent sized dining area. If you like chicken, try "the Goodfella." Its chicken (i believe grilled), fresh mozzarella, roasted red peppers & a balsamic dressing...mmmm! When i was a senior in High School, i did my internship with the Village of Ossining PD. At the time their headquarters were still on Croton Ave, only a couple blocks down form Caruso's, needless to say i pretty much ate there every day! Parking can be a pain though. Once in awhile i'd park in the lot behind the library (right next door). I'm not sure how legal it is, but at the time i wasn't too worried about being ticketed by the VOPD lol!
  17. Hey 2371, we (Buchanan) were not invited, no love from that section of the County i guess lol? 32 Departments sounds like a great parade, i wish i could come watch and take pictures. Unfortunately, i have to do the officer thing and march with the "Maroon Platoon" in Montrose on Friday. Hopfully the weather is nice though, its a known curse that it always rains for the Montrose parade, we shall see. P'Ville, i was just joking Chief, hope your parade goes well and hope we have some great, dry weather!
  18. First off, as stated, there are just some people out there who can never be happy & will always b***h about everything! I am not one to put people and/or their posts down. But as stated, this guy/girl has said NOTHING to back up his "constructive criticism" (aka negative nonsense). If it were "constructive criticism," you would have backed your statments up with some valid points, but you have again & again failed to do so! As most of you have stated, it seems to me that the Somers Fd has once again done an excellent job on specing out a new piece of apparatus, this time its Rescue-20! I also happen to like the speedy-dry hopper! I first saw it on a rig out of Rockland at the Peekskill 4th of July parade a few years ago & i loved it! Our Rescue & Rescue-Pumper both carry speedy-dry, but in bags & 5-gallon buckets. What a pain in the a$$! First off, it can be a pain to carry/handle and they take up a ton of space! The stairs are also an excellent feature, in my opinion, as well as others, obviously! They are much safer than a ladder for obvious reasons. If you are in full PPE, which you should be, it would be much easier/safer to climb stairs than it would be to climb a ladder, where you would be forced to use your feet & hands. If you have large equipment stored in the top-mounted comps. such as stokes, backboards & saws, it would be much easier/safer to carry them up & down on stairs. Two FF's would be able to carry long items such as the stokes and/or backboards up/down the stairs rather than try to "hand" them down to awaiting FF's on the ground. The compartent space doesn't seem to be as much as an issue as many people may have thought. I prefer a walk-around that is set up like Somers & other Depts. I feel that the walk-ins waste alot of compartment space, however they do have certain pros. Pros would be riding space for members, room to get geared-up en-route & even for rehab purposes. But if you have a cab in the front of the rig, behind the driver/officer cab, than a walk-around would make more sense. As stated, you lose alot of room with a walk-in because you lose the compartment depth. Anyway, just my 2 cents. Great posts/comments by everyone...well, mostly everyone =D> [-X #-o And lets keep these forums possitive & stop the non-sense, please! This is a great resource for local & regional emergency service info! If you don't like it and/or refuse to follow the set policies/rules, you can go ahead and remove yourself as a member!
  19. Wow, you hate to hear news like this, talk about freak accident! But if i remember correctly, a similar accident occured within the last year i believe in the midwest(?) where a young child was killed. I believe the Dept. was responding to a job when a rear line came loose from the hose bed and a coupling struck the child who was on the side of the road. I believe someone had posted an article about that incident on the forums, but it was awhile ago. Has anyone ever had something similar occur? Or better yet, does anyone have a solution to ensure that this does not occur again?

  22. JM, Cortlandt VAC in Montrose gives CPR original and re-certs quite often. They're usually a Tuesday/Thursday 6-10pm deal. I'm sure WAS & alsfirefighter can be of much more assistence , since they are much more EMS oriented. I don't know where you are from, but if Cortlandt VAC is near you, it may not be a bad idea. I will check to see if there are any upcoming classes.
  23. PFD, maybe thats something you should have kept under wraps lol! You gotta know you're gonna hear alot of crap on this! Are you be a member of Engine-134? Joking aside, maybe they'll do a decent job. I mean, as stated, these guys take it to the next level! But Fire Patrols quarters are old & could use a little updating! PFD, keep us posted brother!
  24. Wow, haven't read this forum in awhile.... Smokeshowing, why are you picking on Buchanan, thats not nice! I don't pick on your dept., which ever one that may be. And we're not even close to Briarcliff, they have plenty of trucks in that area if they need em.' If they need an engine, rescue or a great Cascade rig however, we'd be more than happy to help em' out lol. Anyway, just messin around with ya brother, i don't ever mind a little friendly breaking of the chops lol! Firedawg, no offense taken brother, you're absolutely right! We have the Tri-Village response plan, which gives us 2 trucks at our disposal. And both depts. (Montrose & Verplanck) are more than willing to help us out. It would be nice however, if we could be more self-sufficient & have our own ladder, but thats not likely to happen anytime soon. The only way i could see any form of a truck in Buchanan would be if we replace an engine with a quint. Anywho...Congrats to the BMFD on taking delivery on the new Ladder-40! From what i have seen, it looks like a great rig. Be interesting to see how well the KME trucks work. Its definately a nice chassis. Also, as i have stated before, smart move on going for more compartment space by eliminating the tank/pump. Best of luck with it!!!
