  1. This is for a great cause and all are welcomed to attend! All info & details here: http://www.cortlandt-ambulance.org/shane.htm
  2. This was a total suprise to me as well, i never heard anything about it until today. Mohegan is being very sneaky 8) . Definately a cool looking rig & makes a much better Utility than the former U-40 Ford Explorer. The career FF assigned to it will be able to carry much more equipment. Seems like a very practical vehicle & a smart move my the Mohegan FD! Best of luck to the LMFD on their new Utility-40! Heres some pictures i found of it.... http://www.1strespondernews.com/webpages/n...5b-c633d404c028

  4. Ah see alsfirefighter, there you go making sense again lol! God forbid anyone would think to put a nice classroom & training facility on their FD's grounds! You see it on Long Island & parts of New Jersey, but not too much around here unfortunately. Money is always a key factor, but it would be nice, thats for sure!
  5. In Buchanan, its a 2-tag system. Red Tag - Interior qualified/Active FF Blue Tag - Exterior/Probie Each FF is issued 2 tags, one to stay on their gear, the other to be handed to the safety officer. Each tag has the FF's name & badge number on it.
  6. We (Buchanan) left behind an Assist. Chief, the Capt., 2 Lt.'s & a whole slew of Deputies. A Deputy was given one of the Chiefs cars, since he was going to be around. We took up our Rescue-Pumper (E-161), which is our 2nd due. It was taken up on Friday night & was back in the village early Sunday i believe. We had like 6 alarms while we were up there (thats a lot for us lol). If an alarm sounded like it had potential to be a job, our guys were told to activate the Tri-Village response so as to muster up some more manpower.
  7. Montrose FD took home 3rd best in their Division (don't know the #). I don't know about anyone else, but i had a hell of a time up there . I even took tomorrow off so i can recover lol! The parade was great, a little long, but great none the less. Congrats to the companies who took home some trophies to show off! Ossining looked great as usual, so no suprise that they took home best overall.
  8. I'm in no way a truckie, but know enough to add some comments lol. I too believe that the 1st due engine should pull past or stop short of the structure to leave ample room for the truck company. As stated, its not hard to add a few lengths of hose to a line, a pain in the a$$ maybe, but not impossible. Now, adding ladder heigth, that may be impossible lol! You also must take into consideration of wheather the truck will be able to operate, sometimes theres just too many obstacles. 242Steve...on Your Verplanck question. Yes, the Bronto (TL46) is very versatile! We did a drill with them one night & our guys went up in the bucket and they showed us what the rig is capable of. Its amazing what it can do. The cool thing is that the bucket, once extended, can "drop" 20' below grade which is real cool.

  11. What a total disgrace of the justice system!!! I didn't get to read my paper today at work, so this is news to me. Maybe its good that i didn't read it at work cause i may very well of thrown up! First O.J., then Jayson Williams, now this freak? What the hell is this country coming to? He admits to sharing his bed with young boys, amongst other things, which have been witnessed. He even dangled his own child off his hotel balcony, what does that tell you? Man, i am soo pissed off right now! I actually thought that the justice system would make an example out of him and give him a jail sentence. Just goes to show how powerful the almighty dollar can be, not to mention fame! I too was hoping that he would get a little jail house justice. Believe it or not, many prisoners look down upon child molesters & would love to beat the snot outta someone like him!

  13. Agreed Wolf! In my Firehouse (Buchanan), there is still a bar. However the bar is located upstairs while the rigs & all other firematic equipment & offices are downstairs. Personally i refer to it as seperate entities. I refer to it as the "upstairs" for "social members" and "downstairs" for firematic members. The bar is closed during training nights & any other firematic related function. If you are even suspected of having any alcohol in your system you better not even think about going on a rig, a call, or anywhere during firematic activities. As i said, we have "associate" and "active" members. The associate members have nothing to do with firematic functions. And most of the active guys don't hang around the bar at all. And if they do, they know they are OOS if there is an alarm. As far as the recent negative news in the Westchester fire service, it is truly unfortunate. It just sucks that a few bad apples can brand an entire service as no good. There is absolutely no excuse for what these two individuals did! I can only hope that they are prosecuted to the fullest extent and certainly thrown out of their department! It disgusts me that a FF, not to mention ex-chief, stole $3,000 from a volunteer organization! I just hope that justice is served in some way. As for the member who phoned in a false alarm, thats just down right stupid! This moron put everyones life at risk, form the firefighters to the general public! Again, i hope this idiot gets what he deserves!

  16. If i didn't know either alsfirefighter or Remember585 personally, i'd be a bit frightened lol! These are the posts that i like lol. Members joking around with one another and making fun of certain things! And John, who are you kidding? Never mind scaring the children, you could scare anybody bro!
  17. Very good thread/topic & responses! I think we can all agree that we get agrivated as hell at certain radio transmissions. x635 & Remember585, great posts, after all you guys know the best lol. This was stated, but truly pisses me off; Units sign on and repeat EVERYTHING that 60-Control has just stated, such as: "Car 9999 to 60-Control, i'm responding to number 123 Main Street, automatic alarm." Well no s**t captain obvious, i would hope that 60 knows where you're going & what for, after all it is their job and they just stated the same info!!! Only exception IMO; multiple calls in the district. There is one dept. in particular that really irks me. Within the last year it has gotten worse! One chief used to repeat everything when he signed on, now its spread to other officers & even apparatus ](*,) !!! In talking with a member of that dept., i was told that this procedure was put into their SOG's/SOP's! When i asked why, i was told; "so that there is no confusion on the location of the call." Well, we have Minitor Pagers, radios (portable & mobile) & even cell phones with I-Page! If you sign on that you're responding, i'd hope you know where the hell you're going & what for! Theres no excuse to not know with all of the alerting resourses we have now! One last thing that i hate, before i end my post lol. I can not stand when an IC states: "Car 1234 to 60-Control, all Blah units will be 10-8." Then you hear each piece of apparatus & every Chief saying the same thing, absolutely unneccesary & a waste of air time! Lets stay smart out there ladies & gents! Think before you speak & use you're heads, for the sake of everyone else!
  18. Like i've said, lets go back to the days of having fun at parades! Lets hit the sirens, blow the air-horns & wave to the spectators! I'm sure plenty of kids that watch the parades ask their mommies & daddies why the firefighters aren't waving back at them. That just sucks! These parades are for us, the firefighters, to come out & have fun & catch up with friends from other depts. They're also for the community to come out and support us. But as John stated, the communities seem to be less & less caring when it comes to their emergency service providers. It seemed like poor attendance in both Montrose & Croton. I'm sure the weather was a factor at both, but its just piss poor that we don't get better turn-outs! Katonah had their parade the other night (Wednesday?) and i'm sure it was awesome. We weren't invited this year, but i know we all had a great time last year! There were alot of departments, alot of spectators and plenty of fun to be had! The fact that we ended the night by reserving a table for about 30 of us at the Katonah bar & grill just added to the great night we had lol! I don't remember what night it was on last year, but it was a competition parade. From whati understand, they had an excellent turn out the other night. Like John said, a week night would be a great time for a fun parade! Would probably get a great turn-out at around 7:00pm. The summer time is tough, especially the weekends, because alot of families are on vacation, away for the weekend or off having bbq's somewhere.
  19. As far as sponsers go, you may want to look into Firefighter brand soda & foods. Yorktown FD used them for their Chilli night. I believe they sold sodas & chips to YFD real cheap & whatever wasn't sold, Firefighter brand bought back. I'm sure they'd be all for some good PR like this!

  21. Amen John, very well said! Parades are getting way out of hand any more! Guys get their panties in a twist if someone is out of step or if they don't get a trophy. I love when guys try to point fingers and blame when they don't win a trophy, what a bunch of babies lol! It kills me that we (volunteer & career) firefighters dedicate or time & our lives to our communities, but we can't have fun at parades! Funny...i thought parades were meant for our communities! Just this past weekend i marched in Montrose & Croton. You can't help but notice all of the people, many of them children, lining the sides of the streets to cheer you on. I'll be the first to admit that i love that! Thats what its all about! But yet we can't wave or smile at our friends, relatives and strangers that watch us march because it may cause us a trophy ](*,) ! Save the seriousness for the fireground, parades should be a fun time! And the issue of career guys marching...who really cares, everyone is allowed to do whatever they want and don't want. And i've seen plenty of career FF's march in parades. And who says they have to bring apparatus? If a career or combo agency is invited, why can't their members just march? Hell, i'm sure plenty of career guys wouldn't mind marching if they were off duty for a parade! I went to this years St. Pats parade in NYC and ended up seeing a bunch of career guys from Westchester marching! We ended up in a bar that was about 95% filled with Firefighters! There were plenty of career guys there, but a few volunteers as well & wouldn't ya know we all got along just fine =D> !
  22. I too think its an excellent idea! Kudos to you guys for thinking of it! I think the children that are cooped up in the hospital would love that! I'm with calhobs...if you're gonna do something like this, why not go all-out, if possible! Get the local FD's, PD's & EMS involved and let them show off their equipment to the children. What kid doesn't love emergency vehicles with lights and sirens? I know the Med Center is a little financially strapped right now lol, but i'm sure you could get other businesses & organizations to help sponser/support something like this!
  23. PFD, i was just messin with ya! I have to agree with you, that house could definatley use a little t.l.c.! They should go all out and get a new rig as well lol!
  24. Thanks Croton, hell of a parade as usual! Its always an awesome parade and a fun time! For parade season, 2 things are gaurunteed; It will rain for the Montrose parade & it will be hotter than hell for Croton lol! Kudos to Cortlandt VAC, Croton FD-EMS & the Tri-Village medic (OVAC) for running around all day treating heat-related medical calls. =D>
  25. I have worn bunker pants on certain EMS calls, but not all of them. Obviously if i am riding with my VAC, i do not wear my bunkers, but i will throw on long pants if i am wearing shorts. As far as MVA's go, i would love to have my bunker gear with me if i am riding with the VAC. Just having that extra bit of protection makes me feel more comfortable. Especially if i have to climb in a twisted up car to hold c-spine stabilization, i'd definately like to have my bunkers on. As alsfirefighter stated, he wears shorts as part of his summer uniform. Again, this comes down to department policy & personal preference. Obviously he has been around long enough & knows what he feels comfortable in. I like NYTruckie's idea of putting scrubs on the ambulances to give members the option of further protecting themselves. As we all know, calls don't always come in when you're ready for them. Theres been plenty of times when i've been in shorts & wished i'd had long pants. Having scrubs or something similar on the rigs would definately be a nice thing. Also as stated, i like the idea that bunkers help to identify you better. If i am 1st on scene & go up to someones door in bunker pants, they know i'm with the FD. If you go up in jeans & a tee-shirt, they may be hesitant, especially elderly people. This is different for career & volunteer depts. though. If you are with a career outfit (fire, ems or both), chances are you are required to wear some sort of uniform. This not only gives you a professional appearance, but helps to identify you as well. As far as I know, not many volunteers wear uniforms on a daily basis. My FD does a first-response/ems assist type program, although it seems to change every so often lol. It used to be that we responded to all ems calls in the village. Then it was only between 7am & 5pm. Now its only to life-threatening calls between 7am & 5pm lol. Anyway, if i respond ems with the FD, i will usually grab my bunker gear, but not neccesarily put them on. I take into consideration the type of call it is. Most type's of medical calls such as diff. breathing, chest pains, etc., i won't wear bunkers. Any type of call where there is a greater chance of bodily fluids present such as mva's, lacerations, puncture wounds, etc., i will put at least bunker pants on. However on mva's, i will wear full bunkers as per dept. protocol. This was a good thread & great discussion. I think we've learned that it all comes down to department policy and/or personal preference. No matter what you all decide (bunkers or not), just remember to look at the big picture & stay safe!
