  1. pbvpm...The Tri-Village plan has worked great for us as stated. Its good for us (Buchanan) because we do not have a ladder truck in our dept., so we can utilze Montrose or Verplanck. I wouldn't say any of the 3 depts have manpower issues. All 3 of us do pretty well on alarms. The stand-by is great because you already have manpower geared-up at the station ready to go. Its rare that any of the 3 depts. will call one another to the scene, unless its a larger fire. Or in special circumstances where a ladder, engine or our cascade may be needed. Theres been plenty of cases to prove that the Tri-Village response was a great idea and will hopfully stay around for a long time to come. pbvpm wrote: "Maybe the tri district response should consider making one Fire Dept. Mutual Aid shouldn't have to be called all the time just for a room and contents fire, or some Depts. call mutual aid for mva's" What exactly did you mean by this, maybe i can clear some things up? :-k
  2. Hey Chief (2553)...while i agree with you, Idian Point is not in our 1st due area. The one location in our 1st due area would definately be 3199 Albany Post Rd., the Westchester Industrial Complex. Tommy, you obviously know why. This is a multiple-level complex with approximately 50 different occupancies. Occupants range from auto body shops to iron works, to pool cleaning business, to mobile paper shredders and even Con Ed!
  3. A fire departments station is usually their headquarters where most of their activity takes place. A sub-station may just be another station used to house other apparatus and/or offices. A department that comes to mind is Mohegan. Thier main Station (or headquarters) is on Rte. 6. This is where most of their offices are for both volunteer and career personnel. This is also where their ambulance corps are located, as well as where thier dispatching is done. They have 3 other stations, or sub-stations, throughout their district. Each station is located at different ends of the district and houses at least one engine and one aerial unit. This enables them to have better response times. In Mohegan, a station may be known as a sub-station, but they are all active fire houses. Other departments utilize sub-stations for just plain storage uses. Verplanck has a sub-station that houses their bus and some dive-team equipment i believe.

  5. Buchanan FD, PD, Cortlandt EMS, NYSP & possibly Montrose & Verplanck FD's use the Hendrick Hudson School District bus garage pumps. The different agencies have agreements with the school district & all drivers are given a pin #. Each rig also has its own "gas key" to help record which rigs were fueled and how much fuel they took.
  6. EJS1810...Same in Buchanan, sworn-in at your first meeting. Its actually the first thing you do as a new member. 242Steve...you made a great point about the whole CDL driver status. I have a CDL and even if i am not driving a Commercial vehicle, my CDL can be tainted if i receive any summons. So i definately agree that if a FF is charged with arson, he/she should be charged at a higher degree. But as stated, this would be very hard to do.

  8. My father works for Con Edison and has for 42 years. He is no longer a lineman, but works on the 500 foot towers you see around the area. I talked to him recently about this issue. One major problem is that many guys are retiring and Con Ed isn't replacing them for whatever reasons (probably $$$). Also, all employees have to go through alot of training, obviously, so training new guys to replace the out-going ones takes time. Con Edison is just like any emergency service provider (PD, FD, EMS) if you think about it. They only have so many crews on the road at once and they can get jammed up easily. They operate out of various locations such as Buchanan, Eastview, Yonkers and NYC. If theres a bad storm with alot of power outages and lines down, its easy to understand why they may have a longer response time. My advise is as alsfirefighter stated, expect a delayed response and have patients! Hell, anyone remember Hurricane Floyd lol???

  11. Not for nothing, but this actually looks like the writting of that jacka$$ who wrote that nasty article about firefighters. It was posted on this site, i'll try and find it. You may remember it, the guy totally bashed firefighters and said that they are over-paid, the job isn't that dangerous & some nasty comment about the 9/11 tragedy. Hmmmmm :-k I think this was the one.... http://emtbravo.just5buckshosting.com/phpB...5253&highlight=

  13. Art, i didn't even know CVAC went to China Pier for the fireworks. I even made last months meeting (i think) and i didn't know they were going lol. Anyway, i went on my buddies boat. It was hard because hes out of Peekskill Yatch Club which is over the Metro North tracks on the south side of the Riverfront Green. We flashed a shield and they let us through which was really cool of them. Plus we were indulging in some adult beverages, so i was definately OOS for the night lol. But yeah, the Peekskill Show was definately impressive this year. It seems to have gotten better over the years, cause it sucked for awhile. But i would definately recommend checking out West Points firework display if you ever get a chance, definately worth it!
  14. I hit up a couple firework displays this weekend. First was on Sunday night at West Point. A bunch of us went up on my buddies boat, what an awesome display that was! They also have a concert going on right before the fireworks & we could actually hear the music from the water. They had fireworks that i had not seen before. They were shot off and went off in the air like normal, however they were attatched to mini-parachutes and they floated in the air for a long time. They were really cool, a first for me. Last night, Monday, i went to the show at the riverfront. Man, did it suck trying to get near that place lol! I forgot how crazy it gets there & we were running late. We got down to the riverfront around 9:00 for a 9:30 start. We were trying to get to the yatch club but the road was closed. Luckily we knew the right people and were let through the crowd in our cars 8) . Again, i watched the Peekskill show from the water and theres nothing like it! The Peekskill show was very nice and seemed to last a long time.
  15. I bought a pair of Sho-Me L.E.D. grille lights from AAA in North White Plains about a year ago. They're great light's with 10 or so flash patterns & they're very bright. They're also very small, so they're versatile for mounting. I bought them in Blue/Blue and they were $180. They came with the lights, the power supply, the switch w/pattern selection, wiring & hardware.

  18. From the NEW YORK POST: June 28, 2005 -- The city's police union agreed to a new contract with the city last night — giving cops a 10 percent raise over two years, sources said. The agreement came as an arbitrator was prepared to give the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association the double-digit retroactive raise, but was going to tie it to a series of givebacks, the sources said. They included reduced pay for recruits in the Police Academy; stretching out the pay ladder from six to seven years; the loss of one personal day a year and allowing the NYPD to change schedules without overtime on 15 occasions a year instead of 10. Under the deal reached last night, cops would lose the personal day, sources said. It wasn't immediately clear what other givebacks were in the deal. The givebacks that arbitrator Eric Schmertz planned to sign off on would reduce the cost to the city of the entire package, possibly by a significant amount. "If the net value is above 8 percent for two years, [the cops are] getting a pretty decent settlement," said one labor expert not involved in the negotiations said before last night's agreement. "The contracts I'm doing now are in the 3 to 4 [percent] range. If they get the top of the range, they're doing well." The PBA, which invested millions in the seven-month arbitration proceedings, is breaking the pattern set earlier by civilian unions. Those unions settled for little more than 5 percent over three years. One city official estimated it would cost $70 million to fund each percentage point in raises, or $700 million for all uniformed workers. The last PBA contract expired July 31, 2002. Cops had been starting at $34,514 and maxing out at $60,818 after 21 years. The new pay structure was not immediately known. One source said veteran cops had been clamoring for long overdue retroactive checks averaging $12,000. "The retro is in the forefront of everybody's mind," the source.
  19. NYTruckie...you forgot the "without shoes" part lol. Nice post though lol!
  20. Ahhh, glad to hear all the other pastery lovers out there enjoyed my Homestyle reccomendation! JaredHG...any dessert shop and/or restaurant on Arthur Ave. is awesome bro lol! You can't go wrong when you shop down there! All the local FDNY companies are always down there food shopping. My buddy from 88-Engine says he loves being so close to Arthur Ave., but you better work out pretty often to keep the pounds off lol! My family gets their pastries from Milano's (spelling?) on Arthur Ave. I actually met former mayor Rudy Giuliani in there when i was younger, definately a cool memory!

  24. Wow this guy puts down people for their poor grammer & English? But yet he continues to use the term firefighter, when it is clearly aimed at multiple firefighter's. Sorry, just an observation. I wasn't going to waste my time replying to this post. This guy is obviously an arrogant prick who really has no clue about emergency services. He says that we should work a 24-hour "shift" in an editorial office  . While that may be stressful due to meeting deadlines, it is in no way dangerous work. There is no comparison between an office job & that of a firefighter or Police Officer. The fact that he stated that "a number of you are still playing that 9-11 theme," just blows my mind. How he could be so insensitive to say that 9/11 was a prime example of how not to respond to such an incident. And to state that many of the Fire, Police & EMS deaths was a result of bad supervisors? Is he serious? He also has the balls to state that fire & police jobs are relatively easy and without stress? Gee, was he ever a firefighter or police officer, i highly doubt it! The author also states that the people who wrote him e-mails have no right to talk about his job because they have no experience. Well, as i stated, i highly doubt he has any fire or police experience! I really wish someone would give him the option of a ride-along! I won't even get into the fact that he believes that he can tell just by looking at an accident how serious it is ](*,) . And i certainly won't get into his ideals of how accident scenes SHOULD be handled lol! He just sounds like a miserable, disgruntled man who is upset because he is late to work due to traffic accidents! Maybe, just maybe, even a little jealous of firefighters and/or police officers? I'm done, sorry ladies & gentlemen of the Network for my ranting.
  25. Homestyle bakery on Water Street in Peekskill has to be one of the best around, IMO. They have everything from cookies to pastries to cakes & everything is made on premise. Definately worth a try, you won't be disappointed!
