Alot of turn-outs have the Dept. name on the top of the coat, i know mine does. I see what you're saying about an SCBA blocking the name, but thats not such a big deal, in my opinion. With Morning Pride gear, they (YFD) could have put the "Yonkers FD" on the butt flap, like some depts do. On my Morning Pride coat, i have "BFD" on the top & my last name on the butt-flap. Nice to see that Yonkers finally got some nice gear for their guys! I love Morning Pride, its very light, durable & comfortabel to wear & work in! Any Yonkers FD members on hear? How do you like Morning Pride compared to the old Janesville gear and just in general?

No, it never seems that those guys get enough lol! It seems as if they just recycle Chiefs every couple of years! But what a great group of Chiefs and Line officers to lead the VFD! Best of luck to all the new & newly promoted officers in the Point!

In Buchanan, members are fitted for gear and it is payed for by the Department. They are usually given spare gear until they get fitted and the gear comes in. Personally, i went out about a year ago and purchased my own gear. I purchased a full set of Morning Pride turn-outs and i also have a full set of Globe gear that is department owned. It was just a personal decision of mine and i liked Morning Pride better than Globe. I have also purchased my own helmets, as my department buys Metro helmets for us and i don't care for them. As long as my personal gear is OSHA approved and doesn't get damaged, my department could care less.

Wow this was a great topic! Good questions anon311! This is a great example of how helpful these forums are! Don't worry anon, i too feel as though i am writing a book when it comes to PCR's (which may not be a bad thing). I also do not utilize abbreviations as often as i should, which makes it more of a pain in the a$$. Everyone had great tips and comments to share. I'll definately have to keep alot of this in mind!

Great topic and replys! I totally understand your aggravation unleashed and i agree with everyones replys. On the topic of numerous FF's from 1 department in a course...I was under the impression that only 1 FF from each dept. can be in a class at one time, unless there are available seats? Maybe alsfirefighter can confirm or deny that? I thought that was a new policy enacted back in January or sometime? But i too have been in numerous courses with multiple FF's from the same Dept. It would be nice if they (the State/County) could change things so that only FF's that are 18 and older can enrole in FFI courses. But i don't know if that is at all possible. I like doug_e's idea of having FF's "active" in their respective department for at least 1 year before enrolling in a FF1 course. This will give the FF a chance to learn the basic operations and procedures of not only their department, but of the fire service in general. Unleashedff248...As i stated, i can understand where you are coming from and you make many valid points. The only advice i can give to you is to look around. If you are willing to travel a bit, look into Putnam or Rockland FTC's. We just had one of our FF/EMT's who was in the same situation as you. He is 21 and a junior at Stony Brook University on LI. He is away at school most of the year and found it near impossible to find a course to fit his schedule. He even looked into taking it out on Long Island, but to no avail. He finally found a FFI course at the Putnam FTC that runs weekdays from 9-4 and Saturdays as well. The class is only two weeks long since they are there for full days.

efdny2003...I am a bit confused by your post. Are you maybe referring to New York State Certified First Responder, which is more on an EMS level? If so, you can check with your local ambulance corps, hospitals or even colleges for upcomming courses.

pbvpm...thanks for clearing that up. I totally understand where you are coming from. Theres obviously manpower issues, not only in Westchester, but all over the Country i'm sure. You are right, it does seem that m/a is being used much more nowadays than ever before. You also have to consider the additional resources. Alot of m/a is due to specialized equipment/personnel, such as cascade systems or FASTeams.
