  1. Hmmm, very interesting lol. I doubt this would be the situation in the Hunts Point section ! Wow, either News12 doesn't edit too well, or they were actually trying to be funny and print it like that!
  2. Hahaha, i know right Muns? WTF? After i posted this i looked at it and thought i made an error in tyoing and i tried to correct it to no avail! I think its quite funny, shall i change it to Richard lol?
  3. To answer your question... That was an old Somers FD ambulance that was donated to Westchester County. The rig is used by the Westchester County Cause & Origin Team Zone-4. It is designated 1404 and is stationed at the City of Peekskill Fire Station 6, quarters of Engine-130 & 39MEDIC2.
  4. Hey grumpyff....Thanks for sharing those links! The Vol. firemen topic was some good reading! Wow, alot of those guys have some nasty words about vollie FD's, which was no suprise! Alot of them are city cops who have not a clue about the fire service, much less the vollie service! Hey, maybe some departments do mis-spend their monies. I haven't seen much or any of that here in Westchester though. Hell, my firehouse is old and to small with barely enough room for our rigs lol! I have heard in the past about the crazy firehouses out on the Island though. I have heard of ones with hot tubs and what not. I can't speak for them because i have no first-hand knowledge of LI Depts.
  5. Hey everyone... I am looking into purchasing a new table-top scanner for my house. I have an old Cobra 16-channel table-top that was passed down to me by my Uncle. The scanner works great, but i am looking for something with more channels and better reception. Again, i am looking for a table-top scanner, nothing crazy, but able to hold in the range of 50-100 channels. If anyone has a good scanner or knows of a decent one fitting this description, please let me know. Thanks in advance!
  6. Thanks guys for all the info. I've had a scanner for quite some time now (an old 16-channel Cobra that was handed down to me), but i just need better reception/more channels. Another thing is that i just recently started actually paying attention the scanner and i don't know much about frequencies and the trunked systems. So everybodys input is definately appreciated! Izzy...I looked at the Uniden BCT8 and it looks like i may order that one. It has everything i was looking for and is definately in my price range!
  7. Found this article on 1stResponder News. It really doesn't answer the question of "do the thawing units work?" I just figured i'd share it because it mentions the thawing unit going m/a to a fire in New Jersey. Just thought it was kind of cool. http://www.1strespondernews.com/webpages/n...a8-5ea65071b004

  9. Oh wow, thanks for the input guys! Sounds like scannerworld may be getting my business pretty soon!
  10. Hey all, thanks for your quick replies! I have checked out scannermaster.com and scannerworld.com and they seem to be very good. Has anyone had 1st-hand experience with either site? I am sometimes wary of ordering things online (i know its 2005 lol). They both seem to be very good sites for any scanner needs. I'm not looking to break my piggy bank, but just want something reliable that can pick-up Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Orange, NYC and some New Jersey action.

  18. Personally, i do own an EMS badge, but it has sat in my room for quite some time now lol. I bought it when i got my NYS certification as a First Responder. I was 16 then and somewhat buffy i guess lol. I was pretty proud of my accomplishment and was eager to show it off. At the time i rode for a VAC that did mandatory in-house duty crews and we all wore uniforms. Therefore i would wear my badge (with my NYS Cert. number on it) on my uniform. There was one incident where it came in handy lol. We had worked a cardiac arrest and the patient was an elderly cancer-stricken woman with a DNR. Problem was, the nobody could find the DNR to give to us. When it was finally located, the local Detectives were called as the patient was pronounced on-scene. One of the Detectives actually asked me for my badge number and i just pointed to my badge  . That was the one and only time that the badge came in handy. As i stated, it stays in my room, so i have never tried it after being pulled over. As some of you have mentioned (and it has been talked about before), you can be mistaken for a Police Officer. If you are wearing a dark uniform, with a badge and all sorts of goodies on your belt, you can see how the public may think you are with the PD. If you're in uniform and walk into a scene that may not be safe for one reason or another, you may be walking into a war zone. Remember, we can't always trust the dispatch information 100%. Calls are dispatched as they are received, so they may not be exactly what you think. I think it is nice to have a badge with your NYS certification number on it in case you are asked to produce proof. However, you might as well just carry your cert card as that will be better proof! My badge is of the Detective/9-point style, with the NYS seal in the middle. It also has Emergency Medical Services, Dept. of Health and my NYS certification number on it. As i said, i got it when i was a CFR, so i got Emergency Medical Services on it so when i became an EMT, i just kept the same badge (as my Cert. # stayed the same). If you are interested in a badge, a good place online is The Fire Store: http://www.thefirestore.com/store/custom_s...goryImage.y=115 Also, a good local place is Web's World Public Safety equipment on North James St. in Peekskill. That is where i ordered my badge from. The owner, Warren, carries every kind of badge you could imagine. You pick the type of badge you want, as well as what you want on it and you'll get it within a couple of weeks.

  20. well said ny10570!!! College is never a bad thing, nor is any chance to further your education, in whatever aspect you can! As stated, having a college background may mean the difference between getting on the job or not. Once you get on the job and put a few years in the service, college will most certainly help you to advance up the ladder in rank (which results in $$$). If you're trying to get on the job (FD, PD, whatever), i strongly advise anyone to take as many tests as possible in as many municipalities and states as possible. This will not only give you better test taking skills, but also increase your chances of getting on a job. If you can swing taking college courses, whether it be full or part-time, do it! If you already work full-time, take night clases and continue to take FD/PD exams. If you don't get on a job or it takes awhile to do so, at least you will have an education to fall back on! Also, keep in mind, as a firefighter or police officer, you are a public servant. You are representing whatever City or Town you are employed by. You may not think college will help with being a firefighter or police officer, but it definately will! You will have to write reports, interact with the public and co-workers, as well as bosses. You want to come across as educated, not just some yahoo off the street that was able to pass a test. If you have bad speaking or writing skills, the public, as well as co-workers, will pick up on this and it will reflect poorly on you! By the way, i am in no way on any job, FD or PD. I am speaking on observations i've made, as well as interacting with career firefighters and police officers. I do however, have a college background and have done several criminal justice internships where i learned alot about these things. I also have many friends and family in the emergency services field. As a volunteer, i am always seeking to improve on my skills and knowledge in the fire and ems field. I take as many classes that i can fit into my schedule. Hell, i take courses on topics that i may never think i will make use of. But these courses just add to my training background and will overall improve my skills as a firefighter/emt. Just remember, training is everything and think of education as training!

  24. http://www.purevolume.com/ This is not exactly an online "radio station" per say, but its a great place to find some good music (IMO). You can find alot of local (NY Metro) bands as well as unsigned/up and coming bands. You can search for bands or use browse to listen to random bands. Most bands on here have at least 4 songs to listen to, most with alot more than that.
  25. Ladder47...As far as i know, there is not a Rockland County based fire board like this one. This is about as close as you can get though. There are a couple of members on this board that are active in Rockland agencies.
