Maybe this will help with some of your questions..... http://www.allentownpa.org/jobDetail.asp?jobKey=7

Well said partyrock! The majority of people do not realize that volunteers must first respond to the firehouse, from wherever they may be and then respond to the call. Depending on the size of the district and how many "active" members you have, the times will obviously vary. Partyrock, you had mentioned the idea of vollys staying at the firehouse. I've often thought about that myself. Its not a bad idea, however i couldn't see it working 100%. I look at departments in Maryland, Virginia and even Pennsylvania that have vollys on in-house duty crews. Seems to work great for them, unfortunately i coulnd't see it happening here. As far as communities going to career fire service, you know how that goes. As a volunteer, i am not against career depts. or FFs at all. But it just doesn't seem justified for certain communities, unfortunately. Unless communities get together and create regional fire departments, such as North Hudson Regional FD in New Jersey. Response times for any emergency service providers always have been and always will be in question. The question is, what can be done to improve them all around?

partrock.....gotcha lol!
-
Gotta agree with ALS on this one! We have all seen and heard agencies taking longer and longer to respond to emergency calls. It maybe time for agencies throughout Putnam & Westchester to look into going paid or combo! As for the situation in Englewood, same thing. Sounds as though they should be looking to career EMS, possibly supplimented by volunteer.

Just an FYI......these shirts are very, very nice. I purchased one at the Long Island Mega show on Sunday, along with a Michael Reilly memorial shirt, which is also very nice. The shirts are only $10, which won't break your piggy bank and they're for a great cause!

I'd have to agree with partyrock. My department currently issues the Globe GX-7 and has issued Globe exclusively for years. However, we have just recently started to get guys sized up for Morning Pride. I personally went out and bought myself a full set of Morning Pride gear about 3 years ago and it was one of the best investments i could have made! I don't have anything against Globe personally, however i'm much happier with Morning Pride. I too thought Morning Pride was all hype at first just because FDNY uses it. However, i now know why they, along with Yonkers, Greenville and many others have made the switch. I feel that the Morning Pride gear is much lighter, breathable and much more comfortable to wear. As partyrock stated, Globe has come along way with the new GX-7 gear, but i still feel (personally) Morning Pride is better. I still have a full set of Globe (pre GX-7) that i keep as my spare and have no problem using it when i have to. As far as helmets go; My department used to issue the Cairns Metro helmets, which i would NEVER wear! They then switched to the Cairns 1010 (thank god) and are now issuing the newer Cairns 1044. Personally, i wear a Cairns N5A leather New Yorker, which i love.

bigfitz...as the other members have stated, i too would highly reccomend taking the Flashover Training course! I have taken this course twice and feel that it is an excellent learning experience! It truly is an eye opener that will show how a flashover occurs, the signs to look for and how to avoid one. I have taken it at the Rockland Co. FTC a few years back and it was great! As stated, they provide helmets for you so that you do not damage your personal or dept. owned helmet. I have also gone through the Flashover Simulator in Middletown Township, NJ. They were basically the same, as most are. I'm not 100% sure, but i believe Putnam County FTC may have a Flashover Simulator that you may want to look into. I know that Orange County does not and Westchester does not either, obvioulsy.

Wow lol! What a jack-a** this guy is!!! There is not one good excuse i can convey that this guy had for his actions! I do not have any lights in my POV. But, If i did, i would understand that i DO NOT have any special privaledges when using such a light. To start off, i do not have any children, but it is one of my pet-pieves (kids w/out seatbelts and so on). To be traveling at such a high rate of speed with your "loved ones" in the car is totally absurd! If the friggen ambulance can't get out..........GO MUTUAL AID!!! If this moron had wrecked his car and killed his entire family, what good would have that done??? Man, as i write this, i am getting more angry and frustrated lol! This incident makes me speechless! Kudos to the Trooper who stood his ground and followed his protocols and the LAW! Chris, as far as agencies having policies on these things...My FD has a policy and i believe members are supposed to only use a blue light within the "district." Our district is only 1 1/2 square miles, thus the reason why i do not use a blue light lol! As far as having family members and such in a vehicle, i am not sure how my agency deals with that. I know of surrounding agencies that strictly prohibit their Chiefs from responding (lights and siren) with family members in their vehicles. When i say that, i mean with department owned vehicles. Rules, regulations and SOP's/SOG's aside, EVERYONE should be using their heads and common sense. I choose to volunteer yes, but would i put my familys life at risk because the local VAC can't get an ambulance out...absolutely not! Lets use our heads people and stay safe!
