Chris, my thoughts exactly. Its quite obvious that the City of Newburgh needs all of its emergency services, instead of making cuts. Its a shame because there are some decent parts of Newburgh, but the "bad areas" far outweigh the good ones. I like to go to some of the restaurants/bars along the waterfront, but getting there is an eye-opener. Id much rather go on my boat so that i can avoid these areas. I can remember our realtor showing us a house off of Broadway and i was like "seriously?" It can be quite scary to drive through the City. My wife, who is from Vermont was quite shocked to see children, some barefoot, playing in the street with no parents in sight. This was a shock to me as well, but not all that surprising. Its great that the OCSO is stepping in to assist in patrols, but how long will that last? A City such as Newburgh should have a big enough police force so that it can be self-reliable. Im all for agencies assisting one-another, but it shouldnt be something to rely on. It seems as though Newburgh and other cities such as Mt. Vernon continue to ask for help instead of resolving their own issues.

I had just copied the article from Lohud.com to post here, but Seth beat me to it. Chris, hell of a job man, well done. You said any of us would do the same, and i hope that we would, but as others have said, you DID it.

Wow, thanks everyone for the replies! All of your info is much appreciated. I was always interested in finding out more information about part-time employment as a po/ds. Ive heard that some depts may hire you p/t as long as you put yourself through the academy (lots of $). Im just trying to open some doors and have some options. I have a good job now (good pay, benefits, etc), but have always been interested in law enforcement. I thought getting on p/t may be an excellent opportunity for me.

Wow, ive seen these events before, but never really looked into them. As Seth said, i really like the idea that the proceeds go to cancer research. Ill spread the word at my firehouse. Unfortunately, im (skier) oos with a shoulder injury and another one of my buddies (snowboarder) is recovering from a serious motorcycle accident. Even if we cant get a team together, id love to attend and show my support for my fellow frefighters/ems'ers. Id also love to give a donation of some sort. We've been joking that this season while my wife and non-injured friends will be enjoying the slopes, myself, my other injured buddy and my non-skiing buddies will enjoy "lodging" lol. As long as theres a nice lodge, fireplace and bar (for hot chocolate of course ), im good to go! In all seriousness, this event sounds like a lot of fun and more importantly, for a great cause. Good luck to all teams who enter.

v85, or any other member in "the know"...will this civil service exam be used to hire part-time officers as well? I know that many Orange County municipalities use part-time officers and was curious if they can be hired off of the list? Any info on part-time LEO employment would be greatly appreciated.

Piraf...I think its a good idea to have your CDL. I've had mine for about 6 years now. The first step is getting your permit. I would highly suggest getting the CDL book from the DMV. Study it hard for awhile and take the written permit test. Make sure to read up on air-brakes & haz-mat. You pass the written and you pay for the permit. It was only $40 or so when I did it if I remember correctly. May have gone up though, as everything does. After that, you schedule your road test. This can be tricky because you need a truck. I work for a DPW, so obviously I used a work truck. The road test isn't too difficult. You really need to know how to do your pre-trip inspection though. Whatever you decide, good luck.

Capt, its funny you mention latex paint & spray paint's. These, along with aersol cans are a big concern to myself and others who work Sanitation. We have a couple auto-repair/paint shops in our Village. We've had issues with the way they dispose of these products. If we discover them, we contact our Foreman so that he can reach out to the owner/occupant.
-
First off, RIP FF Koesar. Speedy recovery to the injured members. Secondly, I happen to work sanitation. It never seizes to amaze me as to what we find in dumpsters. As I ride around the Village while working, I make note of a lot of things. I am fortunate to volunteer in the same town as I work. I get to know hydrant locations, occupancies, hazards, etc. I have notified our Fire Marshall of many issues and hazards on several ocaasions. As another member said, there is no such thing as a routine fire. We can never know the full extent of a fire and can never takes things for granted. If we allow ourselves to become complacent, we will get hurt. PPE is a must at any fire, even dumpster fires. You don't know what's in that burning dumpster, so why leave the scba on the rig? Stay safe and always keep your eyes and ears open!
