My father has known Charlie and his family for many years. I had the pleasure to do an internship with Peekskill PD while Charlie was still on the job. I also remember Charlie from when i was active at Peekskill EMS. He is one hell of a cop and a great guy as many have said. Its terrible to hear what hes going through. I plan to make every effort to be there, as do some of my friends. If i can not attend, i will be sure to make a donation. I hope like hell you guys get a great turnout as im sure you will. Charlie is a very well known guy. Best wishes.

This article and subsequent discussion brings up a great topic. Dealing with barriatric patients can be very tricky and if not done properly can be disastrous. We had such a patient in the Village (since moved to a nursing facility). There was an instance where we were called twice within 2 days for this patient. The 1st was to assist EMS in removing her from the 2nd floor (naturally) apartment and to assist with transport. The 2nd was to assist when she was released from the hospital. We actually had to set up a rope system to remove her the first time. We even had to shut down Rt 9A during the incident to make room for the operation. This patient was in the 715lb range and thus made for an intresting removal. Thankfully, between EMS, ALS, FD and PD, we had many people working together to come to a solution and get the job done. My FD works very closly with our local VAC (Cortlandt), and many of us are members of both the VAC and FD. We were fortunate to have members who are very knowledgable in rope systems (not a strong point of mine) and put a great one together to get the patient down the narrow stairs. Unfortunately, 2 members suffered minor injuries during the incident. One injured his foot when the Stokes (and patient) came down on it. I forget exactly what happened to the 2nd member, but again, both were minor. Once the patient was brought down the stairs, she was placed on the floor of the ambulance in the stokes. The stretcher was obviously removed and the Stokes was secured in the rig. Numerous members rode to the ER to assist ER staff with patient transfer. On a side note, i felt bad for one of the Troopers who assisted us. He was nice enough to ask if he could help and we said sure, we'd appreciate it. He was placed on the line and boy was he in for a workout lol. Again, these are strenuous incidents and must be dealt with carefully. In our incident(s), there was no urgency and we were able to have time on our side. I dont know what we would have done if she had been in cardiac arrest. This is why pre-plans are great. We do them for fires, why not for EMS calls? I know that we (Buchanan FD/Cortlandt VAC) also had an incident in the 80's. A barriatric patient needed to be removed from the 2nd floor of his house. I dont remember the particulars, however i do know that a tower-ladder was called in to assist. The FD made a large cut-out of the exterior wall and used a stokes to lower the patient using the tower-ladder.

I wasnt around for this either (born in 82' lol), but my father worked for Con Ed for 44 years, retiring a few years ago. When this occured, my family lived on 1st St and had a perfect view of the Substation. My father also worked out of Buchanan at the time. He said it was chaos and that many people believed that there was a Nuclear emergency and actually were trying to race out of town. My father knew what it was and told my mother to relax as he went to work. Many of our guys in the Firehouse also tell stories of the Blackout and being at the Substation throughout the night. Theres actually an old newspaper article about it in our Firehouse. Ill see if i can copy it and post it here to share.

Hahahaha lol. Theres a couple factors to that equation, 1 is you are who you are and 2, you can avoid 9W/Storm King lol. But ill take ya up on the offer any day tour you work

If an FDNY FF could afford to live in Montauk, then they'd probably have a helicopter to commute in, no? My job (DPW) has a 30 minute "call-in" time, which is meant to get guys in quick during storms and such. However, there isnt much of an issue and its rarely enforced as we are a small shop and need all the help we can get regardless of commute time. I now make the 2nd guy that lives in Orange County in my shop. If im called in during the middle of the night, it may take me a little more than 30 minutes to get into work, but my job understands.

WOW, just WOW....What are these clowns thinking? What the hell is going through these morons heads? Whats with the Chiefs and officers for allowing this? Whats wrong with OTHER Chiefs, Officers, FF's, EMT's, LEO's for not speaking up? On top of all of that, what the hell is the driver of the rig thinking? Thanks Bogota FD for making the Vol fire service look like crap once again! Absolutely disgusting!

I can understand trying to cut back the OT. But if they can hire 300 guys (starting salary around $35k?), then theres obviously money somewhere. I just love when they cry poverty, but miraculously find money. M'Ave...best of luck to you and your brothers. I can only hope that they dont continue to hire for the wrong reasons and continue to "dummy-up" the test. There is soo much rich history in the FDNY and its a shame to see the job going where it has been. I have friends on the job who tell me about some of the BS that they have to deal with in regards to who they have to work with. Hey, i F'ed up when i took the exam back in 02.' I got a 96 on the written, but didnt work out or prep nearly enough for the agility and i didnt pass it. Ive kicked myself in the a$$ many a time because of that. So, to see guys being all but handed the job on a silver platter makes me sick and makes me worry for you guys that actually love the job and do it for all the right reasons.

Definately a unique pumper, best of luck with it Arlington. I like the built-in compartment for the Hooks on the side of the Tower Ladder, very cool idea.

Okay, here it goes. I must apologize for my post as i assisted in the "hi-jacking" of this thread, so im sorry if i upset anyone. Kenny started the thread to discuss the parade and the subsequent winners at said parade. I would probably be pissed if my thread was taken off-topic. However, with all due respect Captain, i see you quote "somebody is going to be sued," which i will assume is a shot at my post. If you think for a second that this is a "NON-issue," or it will NOT happen, i will beg to differ. You stated that as a Chief Officer, you always ensure that your district is covered and i commend you for that, as it is our responsibilty to do such. However, there are plenty of agencies that do NOT pre-plan for coverage and that is the issue. Again, this could have/should have been a seperate thread. I mean no disrespect to you, just making my point clear. As for Montrose at the convention...they always look sharp and have plenty of marchers, so it comes as no surprise that they took home a trophy. I still think the guys and gals in Maroon look much better though, but i guess im biased . Stay safe

Man, what a shame. 36 is soo young, what a tragedy. RIP Deputy Powers. My heart goes out to her husband and children, as well as her fellow MCSO members.
