Great shots Grumpy, thanks for sharing them with us! Looks like you had a great day with your son. Is it me, or are the Ferrarra cabs a bit bigger than the Seagraves? In the pics of L4, between the door to the crew cab and rear body, there seems to be extra space where that small window is.

What a scumbag...plain and simple. Feel bad for the actual FDNY members and all others who were duped by this douchebag. He portrays himself to be all about charity and what-not. However, the article states that he was thrown out of South Salem vol FD for lack of work hours. Guess he didnt have enough time to volunteer while he was traveling the world spreading his lie's and trying to make a buck.

Thanks Tom, knew I could count on one of the DES guys to answer my questions. That was kind of how I remembered how things worked. I will be looking into it for sure. Thanks again bro!

To my knowledge, this class hasn't been offered in quite a few years. We were just discussing this course the other day at my firehouse. A few of our guys, including myself need this course. Would be a beneficial course for my FD, seeing Stewart Airport is in our 1st due area. Its been awhile since I've taken a class at WCDES. Anyone know if the courses are opened to "in-county" agencies first?

Upon leaving the Outer Banks, we headed north to Ocean City, MD. Again, we only spent a short time here. They have a huge FD in Ocean City with numerous stations. However, when i tried to stop at some on our way out, they were either out on runs or otherwise empty. From Ocean City, we continued north to Deleware to spend the day. Our final destination was Rehoboth Beach, DE to check out the Dogfish Head brewpub, amongst other things. On our way from MD to DE, we came accross the Bethany Beach Vol. Fire department. It was a huge firehouse and the doors were open...a perfect photo opportunity. Even though the Firehouse and apparatus are labeled "volunteer," they do have career staffing. I met with one of the Career members who was doing his rig check of their Engine. When he was done, he gave me a tour of the Firehouse and a synopsis of their activity. They are not an overly busy Fire department. But being a beach destination, their population skyrockets in the summer months. With that boom comes mostly medical aided cases, mva's and water rescues. Heres a link to their website: http://www.bethanybeachfire.com/index.cfm

Next stop; Outer Banks, North Carolina. Ive been vacationing to the Outer Banks since 2005 or so. My wife and i got married on the Outer Banks of NC in 2009 and have been back at least once a year since. On this particular trip, i believe we only spent 1 or 2 days here as Hurricane Irene was chasing us North. We were "lucky" enough to be woken by the fire alarm 1 morning. As we evacuated, i took the oportunity to get some "action" shots. I heard there was a smoke condition on one of the floors of our Hotel, but never heard the outcome. The FFs did however stretch to the Hotels FDC. Most of the FD's on the Outer Banks have some form of Career staffing. We were staying in Nags Head and they are a combo dept like most, but i am unsure of their staffing levels. Link to the Outer Banks Professional Firefighters website w/links to each of the stations. http://www.angelfire.com/nc/IAFF3286/ Nag's Head Chiefs Car (IC) Driver-side shot of NHFD E16 Officer-side shot of NHFD E16 Shot of NHFD E21 IAFF decal on NHFD Engine. As many of you may know from some of my previous posts, my wife and i love to travel. Last July we traveled throughout the Pacific Northwest. Link to my Pacific Northwest photos - http://www.emtbravo.net/index.php/topic/42938-out-and-about-pacific-northwest/page__p__244865__hl__%2Bpacific+%2Bnorthwest__fromsearch__1#entry244865 Then, in August, we were both fortunate enough to have some time off. With no real plans or reservations, we jumped in the car and headed South. I have been meaning to post these pictures for months, but kept forgetting about them. Enjoy! First stop; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. We had never been to Myrtle, so figured we'd check it out. We spent about 2 days here and had a great time. I took these shots as we were leaving to head North. I apologize for the poor quality, i thnk i left the camera in the heat too long. Anyone know how to improve the quality by chance?

SRS131EMTFF... My wife and i were in Boston the same weekend to take in the Bruins-Rangers game with some friends. We were there Friday-Sunday, but i didnt get any fire pic's. Noticed they (BFD) had a couple of 2+ alarm fires that weekend, would have been a good photo op. Heres a pic of our seat location at TD Bank Arena. Here's a plaque from the Sam Adams Brewery (love that place). Sorry for the poor quality picture, there was a bad glare. But its a plaque from the Massachusetts Professional Firefighters Assoc to Sam Adams for being a Golf Tournament sponsor.

As many of you may or may not know, i spend a lot of time in Vermont, as that is where my wife if from. The Town is Middletown Springs and the local VFD is literally next door to my in-laws house. Some of my wifes family are members of the FD, including some ex-officers. A couple years back, i helped them out at a structure fire. Since then, i have struck up a friendship with many of the members there. If any of you have been to rural Vermont, then you know that its nothing like we're used to here. Most firehouse's are simply garages for the apparatus with little to no room for training or offices, etc. The Middletown Springs VFD is no different. They are "lucky" enough to have a meeting hall. However, the meeting hall is also where some of the rigs are stored. When the meeting hall is needed, 3 rigs have to be moved outside. These VFD's have very minimal budgets and rely heavily on fund-raising. I was up there a few weeks ago for a family wedding and noticed a "new" piece of equipment at the FD; a Maxim ladder. This truck would definately be considered an antique here in the Hudson Valley. I got the chance to take some pictures of the rig and talk to the Chief about it. It is a 1966 Maxim 100' straight stick that came from the Rock Hall, Maryland VFD. This rig was going to be scrapped before the MTSVFD found out about it. The MTSVFD Chief drove down to Maryland and drove the truck back to Vermont. It recently underwent a ladder test and passed with flying colors. Other than some minor repairs, the truck should be in service shortly. Im hoping it will be re-lettered and in-service the next time im up there so i can take some photos. This "new" addition should serve Middletown Springs, as well as neighboring communities, very well. This area see's its fair share of chimney fires and an aerial unit would be a big help. I mentioned earlier that i had the chance to help this FD with a structure fire a few years back. At one point, i asked the Chief if a ladder truck was coming. He replied that yes, one was on its way from Granville. Granville is actually in New York and had an easy 20 minute ride to the scene. Their ladder is/was a 65' (?) quint. The next closest Truck would be from the City of Rutland, a good 25-30 minute response time. Enjoy the pictures.

Kyle, you asked for more pictures of Middletown Springs apparatus, so here ya go. I apologize for taking so long to post them. They were on my wifes computer and i forgot about them. First up is MTSVFD's First Response vehicle, a 200? GMC Yukon. Ambulance coverage into Middletown Springs is provided by the Poultney Rescue Squad. MTSVFD responds to all medical calls in MTS with this BLS fly-car. Here is just another picture of Middletown Springs "new" ladder truck. This is their rescue, which is on a 4x4 Chevy 5500 chassis. I am not sure who the body was built by. This rig was purchased pre-owned a couple of years ago. This is their Attack truck, a Pierce on a Dodge Powerwagon chassis. Another shot of their Rescue. Here is a shot of their ETA-531, a VTEC on Freightliner chassis. Sorry for the bad shot, was taken in the bay. The only rig missing is their ETA-532, which is on a 1970's(?) Chevy chassis if i remember correctly. It is kept in a very tight bay and getting a shot of it was near impossible.

Im aware that there wouldnt have been a study if there wasnt interest lol. The study was based on just Cohoes and Watervliet though. My question was more toward the merger of those 3 departments and if it was thought of or even feasible. To be honest, i know nothing of the Maplewood FD. Are they career, volunteer or combo? You said that they run mutual-aid and some automatic m/a already, which is good. Thats why i was curious if it'd be feasible to merge and share resources and personnel even further. I cant blame Cohoes Local for be against it if it were to reduce staffing, as its already low. Thanks for sharing some history of the area. Crazy to know that Watervliet was at one time the largest Town in the State!
-
I spend a fair ammount of time in the Capital District, but know very little about the local fire services. Obviously, Albany is the biggest, best-staffed of them all. However, i know that the other smaller FDs have minimal staffing. I had read about the consolidation study between Cohoes and Watervliet and thought it was a positive step. Now, the Watervliet Arsenal FD is a federal one, correct? I know that they provide mutual-aid, but i dont know much about their staffing levels. I guess i didnt realize how minimal the staffing was in Cohoes, Watervliet and Green Island. nysff...you seem to be the best source for Capital area FD topics. So, ill throw this question at you if ya dont mind. Would/could it be feasible for Cohoes, Watervliet and Green Island to create some sort of merger/consolidation? Again, i dont know a whole lot about the area in regards to response areas and distance between districts.
