  1. Capt, as always bro, you are spot on. Its just easier for many folks to blame Unions. 1210671...THANK YOU! Moderators, is there any way we could possibly split this thread? A man, a human being, has died during the course of his job. It was a terrible tragedy and just plain sucks. Can we keep a thread as a condolence page possibly? Guys and gals, you wanna talk semantics or knock the Unions as some of you insist on doing? Lets have some more class and keep it seperate, ok? There are soooo many things i want to talk about, clear up and give my thoughts on. However, this is a public forum and i must be careful as this is my job. I just love how everybody has become Sanitation experts and feel they know what should be done in every community. I do this for a LIVING, it is my CAREER and has been for over 9 years now. I said it earlier, it is a dangerous job and if its one you havent done, you have no clue as to what its all about. Firefighting is a dangerous job. Are some of you going to start blaming the Unions the next time a Fireman is injured or killed on the job? Should we tell Fireman that they are no longer allowed to enter a burning building because its unsafe? Of course not, that would be absurd. Again, RIP to my fellow Teamster. Thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and the Peekskill community.
  2. Man, this is the first I'm hearing of this...I'm at a loss for words. R.I.P. Thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and Teamster brothers of Peekskill DPW. Very sad news
  3. The New York State Police have launched an aggressive campaign to crack down on distracted drivers. The article and video state the the NYSP plans to unveil 40 CITE vehicles, which stands for Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement. Im glad to see that the State Police are using "unmarked" vehicles more regulary for patrol purposes. I truly believe that this will help them tremendously to crack down on all facets of traffic enforcement. 6. My Link: http://www.midhudson...45-18Apr12.html Best of luck to the members of the City of Newburgh PBA/Teamsters Local 445! I hope that this is a good thing for the members, the Teamsters, as well as Newburgh itself.
  7. Capt, i whole-heartedly agree with you. I was trying to see if the OP meant that kind of response using M/A. We all know that there is an OVER abundance of apparatus in Westchester. Many VFDs cant even get these rigs off the floor on a regular basis. TRUST me, i know that the apparatus is out there and available, was just trying to see where the OP was coming from. If you re-read my last post, i touch on the topic of having the proper number of properly trained members on the rigs. Apparatus doesnt put out fires, properly trained personnel do. So to say EVERY MVA should get 2 & 1 really doesnt mean a damn thing when it comes down to it, now does it? Now, going back to your statement that apparatus is available within minutes. You are absolutley correct. But, why should run-of-the-mill calls require soo much M/A? I wanted to steer my posts in a certain direction, one which i think this thread will lead to. Shall i dare say it...CONSOLIDATION!
  8. Thank you Captain. I did read that the offender had harassed another member on the radio, which im sure was the nail in the coffin for him and rightfully so. I just wasnt sure what kind of vehicle the other member was in. The fact that it was a marked FD vehicle, also travling L&S to the SAME incident and the offender chose to pass him is just plain negligent. The fact that he was traveling 60mph (approx) in a 30mph zone is also quite concerning as that in itself is negligent. Maybe INIT915 or another LEO member can help me out here; i thought NYS VTL stated that an emegency vehicle can only travel 10mph over the posted limit while en-route to an emergency? Capt, are you out of your mind? Is that Southern Florida sun getting to your brain? Youd like to take an incident and actually make an example of it so that others could benefit from a learning stand-point? (insert sarcasim)
  9. Firebuff...excellent points and right on the point i was trying to drive home. Sending 2 & 1 may not be the right assingment in many places. You need to send the appropriate apparatus and manpower to each call. This is vastly different in the volunteer service. Spartan...i was certainly keeping BFD in mind when posting. The original poster said that 2 Engines and 1 Truck should respond on all MVAs. Does BFD have a Truck? No. Also, should BFD send E160 AND E161 to an MVA? Probably not. BFD has a Rescue and a rescue-pumper to send to MVA's. Am i missing what you are trying to get accross? Dinosour...no, i am definately NOT saying a fire in a 5+ story building shouldnt get a 3 and 1 response. I was simply asking if the OP was implying the use of mutual-aid for many VFDs to be able to have such a response. Also, lets face it; What good is 3 and 1 or 4 and 2 or whatever if theyre not filled with properly trained members? I think the OP is thinking a City type response should be implimented in the "burbs." Could you have such response assignments? Sure you could, but only as good as the crews on theses rig's. My major point was that many VFDs dont have the # of apparatus that the OP is suggesting should respond on certain alarms. Again, it comes down to individual needs of individual depts.
  10. K, ill bite. I like your line of thinking in regards to alarm assignments and mutual-aid. Its been discussed time and time again on here and its a shame that it hasn't gone anywhere. But in your post that i have quoted, i must disagree. It seems as though you're going off of City responses with your numbers for MVAs and such. Many Volunteer FDs dont even have a Ladder. So why do you think all Vol FD's should respond with 2 Engines and a Truck to MVAs? My vol FD is fortunate enough to have 3 Engines, 2 Trucks and a Heavy Rescue that respond out of 2 stations. For an MVA, our Rescue is 1st Due out of our Station 1. An Engine would be 2nd due and sometimes we respond with 2 Engines. Many times, the IC will turn one of the Engines around, depending on the need. We NEVER send a Truck on an MVA, but thats our response. Then to say any call at a 5+ story building should get 3 and 2? As i said, some Vol FDs dont have 1 Truck, let alone 2. Many vol FDs dont have 3 Engines either. So are you suggesting mutual-aid for these responses?
  11. Ahhh, ok may explain things a bit better lol. Thanks bro. Chief Flynn, my apology, as i did not see/get to read some of the posts apparently.
  12. Chief, i could be wrong, but i havent read any posts that were "anti-career." Maybe i am missing something? I also dont think anyone has bashed you personally. Many have responded to your posts, but i didnt see any as an attack? Ive always enjoyed reading your posts, even when i may not agree with them 100%. Hell, i even enjoy your witty sarcasim. Its been said on here before that you're anti-volunteer. Guess what, maybe im alone, but i could care less if you are or not. I must say though that i agree with your post that i have quoted here. Whether you're anti-volunteer or not, you bring up an excellent point. The issue of reckless driving (on either "side") is a big problem. In the article, it is hard to tell what kind of vehicle the Chief passed. It says that he passed another member who was en-route to the call. Was this another Chief or a member in a POV? Either way, its safe to say that this Chiefs actions were reckless and downright stupid. I am not too familar with Harrison, much less the intersection where the accident took place. The article states that the Chief was traveling around 60mph. This was not a highway, so the speed limit was certainly not 55mph. So, he may have been in a 45mph zone at best, no? To drive 60mph through a congested Town, then blow a red light at those speeds is crazy. Any apparatus operator (or civilian driver for that matter) knows that you dont just blow an intersection, controlled or not. Another member had posted that statistics show that theres not much difference in response times when going the speed limit versus going over it by a small ammount. This is pretty much common knowledge stuff that seems to go out the window. Even if this Chief didnt crash, he would have only shaved off seconds of his response time. Because of his actions, somebody was seriously injured, while he apparently walked away unscathed. Because of his actions, emergency personnel had to worry and respond to this 2nd accident which he caused. Maybe i didnt read it correctly. But the article states that the monetary damages are to be paid by the Town AND this former Chief. Safe to say that it was determined that the Chief was at fault, no? But nowhere in the article (unless i missed it) does it say anything about him being charged or ticketed for anything. Also, was he suspended from the HFD and/or "de-moted?" Guys and girls, this should be a wake-up call to all of us, career, volly, PD or EMS. Stay safe
  13. I know 1 of the newly sworn-in DEP officers & I wish her the best in her career. Congrats to all the new officers. May you all have long, prosperous careers. Stay safe
  14. First, let me say I wish a speedy recovery to the injured G-Man. I am on my blackberry and hate typing on it. When I get to a computer, ill share some of my thoughts as a Sanitation Laborer (Teamsters Local 456 by the way). Its a very dangeroud job and unless you've ever done it, you have no idea. Again, thoughts and prayers for the injured worker. My thoughts are also with the other workers as this must have been a traumatic experience.
  15. Kenworth-Manitex Extreme Duty This Kenworth is pretty bad-a$$. Seth, Quality Towing here in Vails Gate has a similar rig with a rotating boom for heavy recoveries. I will see if i can get a shot of it in the next few days. I have seen it in action and the thing is pretty darn impressive. Quality has quite the fleet and they take much pride in their equipment, keeping it clean and usually on display in front of their shop on Route 32.

  24. Nice video RES24CUE, thanks for sharing. You did a great job of explaining the step-by-step motions of forcing a door Captain. My FD has a forcible entry simulator that we use quite often. We will set it up in front of the door to our training tower when we are conducting search or truck op's drills. This way, the 1st in crew has to force the door before they can begin to execute their tasks. Its a great tool to keep sharp on a basic skill. Again, great video and some great tip's from the other members.
