Barry, thank you for the response sir, knew i'd get some answers. Now, i know little to nothing about Yonkers FD and its operations. However, cutting 2 Engine companies AND a Battalion Chief sounds assanine to me. Im under the impression that YFD currently runs with 2 Battalion Chiefs per shift (please correct me if i am wrong). Now, to go to just 1 Batt Chief? YFD is obviously a very busy department and one that is well regarded. With the ammount of work they catch, making ANY cuts would be a big blow to not only the FD, but the residents of Yonkers. I know that Yonkers is covered by Empress EMS, which is one of the best local commercial EMS agencies. But to cut FD response to EMS run's won't help anyone (besides the politicians). Im sure there are times when Empress is tied up, but YFD can be there within minutes to initiate care and possibly save lives. Aside from that, i am sure that Empress appreciates the extra hands. Now, as far as the rumored fly-car program; doesnt sound like a smart move to me. How is that more cost effective when youre ADDING equipment (maintenance, fuel, replacement). Plus to go from having 4 sets of qualified hands to help, you'll just have one. How much work can one EMT (or Medic) do by themselves? Any cuts in the YFD would be an injustice to the residents that they protect. Their training, experience and knowledge shouldn't have a price tag placed on them. Find other ways to cut costs, but dont mess with Public Safety. Hey, im just a young volunteer firefighter, but just my 2 cents. x4093k.... Thanks for pointing that out. After i posted, i had a feeling that i mis-spelled his name, but of course got busy with other things. I hate when i mis-spell anything, let alone a mans name who deserves better than that. I will go back and edit my post to correct that, thanks.

Outstanding job FF Rodriguez! Talk about being at the right place at the right time. Also, hats off to the responding YFD members who assisted, as well as EMS. Nice work all around. Just a question, as it was hard to understand in the article. Is Yonkers looking to stop sending YFD on medical calls or are they looking to stop training members as CFRs/EMTs? Either way would be a bad move in my opinion.

Nice work, congrats to the Arlington FD! Shows that the AFD has worked hard from top to bottom.

Agreed 100% pt.... However, the article stated he had no motorcycle license (shocker). Maybe you were referring to his driving privaledges (sp?) period? If so, i agree there as well...take his license away for a couple of years, he obviously takes his for granted.

As someone who has lost a friend to a motorcycle accident and had another friend nearly killed, this pisses me off to no end! Time after time, day after day, i see these speed-junkie a$$holes riding at high rates of speed with zero regard for their lives, but more importantly , the lives of other motorists. Just recently had a crotch rocket scare the bejesus out of my wife and i on Route 9W (Storm King Mtn). My wife was driving and had just enough time to say "holy...(and as the bike passed) s**t!" We were traveling at approx 60mph when he cut between us and a car in the right lane with maybe a couple feet to spare. I was soo upset, as was my wife, that i was shaking. If we had come around a turn and he was sprawled accross the road, id be the one to have to stop and help him. We actually caught up to him in Fort Montgomery as we approached the Bear Mountain traffic circle. I was soo tempted to give him a piece of my mind, but i knew he wouldnt care and probably laugh at me. Its ususlly not these A-HOLES that will be killed. Its the well versed, easy going guys and girls that are out for a Sunday cruise on their Harleys or cruisers. To the Troopers involved in this case, bravo and job well done! Also, nice work to the NYS DOT guys that were giving the radio updates. Nice to see his sorry a** was sent to the County jail on $20K bail. Sorry, rant over.

I saw this on the news...disgusting is all i can say about this morons actions. He is lucky that his son wasnt killed, jacka$$. The Court has suggested parenting courses, really? I think his actions prove that he is well beyond that point. Any human being, parent or not, should know that leaving a 4-year-old unattended is a recipe for disaster.

Barry, once again you pick apart one of my posts, thats fine. Im not going to go back-and-forth with you. What is NRFD's response to an automatic alarm? I do see both sides of the article. I understand the drain on the FD, the manpower, the rigs, etc. I understand that many, many, many times it is BS. I also agree that "repeat offenders" should be fined for many reasons. I also know that in N.R. where youre running thousands of calls a year, its not as critical to get out and gear up for the BS runs. However, this article was based on a Vol FD, no? I see it both ways, but this article could have been a little clearer. I in no, way, shape or form bashed or knocked Nyack FD or its members. I made my comments as general statements.
-
Umm, why is this news? Maybe i am wrong, but arent we hear to respond to alarms? Yes, a high percentage of alarms are false, so what? Smells and bells and in many places EMS runs, make up a large percentage of responses. But again, this is why we are here, no? There is a reason the alarm went off, this is why we need to respond and investigate. If we find it was "food on the stove" or dust or what have you, so be it. What is the alternative? Send a PD unit or just a Chief to "check and advise?" Like the boy who cried wolf, there will be the 1 time its an active fire and you'll be caught with your pants down. Im sorry if you get annoyed at false alarms, but its part of the "job." You dont like it, go join a slower department i guess. Personally, i dont see how false alarms really can bring down morale. Maybe guys are getting burned out on these runs and if so, suck it up! I look at it this way; every and any alarm that i respond to is a learning experience. Its a chance to gear-up and get out there and practice all the basics. So what if only 1 in a 1,000 alarms are the "real thing." It will be that 1 time that counts. Just my worthless 2 cents.
