While I totally agree with you, there were arrests made in connection with that homicide. But yes, Peekskill needs all of its services, certainly not less.
-
Very crappy news as I have many friends in the PFD, PPD and DPW. Rumor has it there will be a rally at City Hall on Tuesday night. If any Peekskill guys know if this will happen, keep us posted. I would love to come out and support my fellow Teamsters, as well as all other Peekskill employees.

I heard Cronomer Valley FD get requested for their Rescue for its light tower to assist PD. Was curious what was going on, now I know. Scary situation that serves as a reminder that there is no such thing as a "routine traffic stop." My thoughts are with the Trooper for a full recovery, physically, as well as mentally.

Maybe i'm wrong, but Newburgh is like any other FD...they give AND receive M/A. They have their assignments set-up like most depts. with the intent of NOT stripping the entire area. Thus, some depts may feel as they are getting "skipped over." For the 2nd Alarm last night, they called Air Guard for the FAST. This is part of the assignment and it makes perfect sense. Air Guard is a STAFFED FD and they are a quick, straight shot down 17K into the City. If i were a NFD member, i'd feel good knowing the FAST will get to the scene as fast (pun intended) as possible, They also called for an Engine from West Point, also part of their updated alarm assignment. Again, makes perfect sense as West Point is a FULLY staffed FD. Yes it may take them awhile to get into the City, but most likely not any longer than a closer volunteer company. Its no secret that career FD's like to utilize other career FD's when possible and its not secret why either. There were 2 volunteer companies operating at the 2nd alarm alongside the career members of Newburgh, West Point and the Air Guard. There were also 2 separate volunteer companies that were re-located into the City and handled several calls, including a small electrical fire. I honestly don't see a problem with Newburgh's alarm assignments. They know what works best for them and they write up their assignment requests as such. *Newburgher....Lieutenant, please correct me if any of my info regarding NFDs assignments were incorrect. (by the way, Hell of a job to you and your guys last night!).

Excellent interview of Chief Flynn. Always nice when the media gets info from good, credible sources. Hope for a speedy recovery for the members who were trapped, scary situation. Looks like another job well done by the YFD!

OLFD and VGFD members then located active fire in the wall. Members then worked together to extinguish the fire, ventilate and overhaul. NFD E10 (reserve) took up from the fire on Carson Ave and responded to assist OLFD and VGFD members. NFD Fire Investigators responded to the scene as well. All companies remained on-scene until the FI's concluded their investigation. Once OLFD and VGFD companies cleared from Carter St, they were returned to their respective districts.

Chris, looks like you guys will have a beautiful day for the parade! Have fun everyone and enjoy.

Very well said Captain and great points sir. I think all too often, we in the fire service are to quick to want to "take up," especially at 3 or 4 in the morning. Even worse if its a "repeat offender." As Captain Nechis stated, we are sworn to protect the people we serve. If you're at a call, you're already there, whats another 5-10 minutes to make sure all is well? Stay safe

Ive been a member of this site for a long time now. In the past, there have been posts made by Chief Flynn that have gotten under my skin. However and maybe its because ive grown up a bit, ive come to realize that he has opinions and is certainly entitled to them as is anyone else. Chief Flynn has worked his way up the ladder of a very busy, pro-active and versatile career fire department. For that, i have nothing but respect for the man, as he has certainly earned it. Chief Flynn is obviously a very intelligent man who has so much fire service knowledge and experience to share. For that, i have always enjoyed reading his posts as they are well thought out and written. Maybe Chief Flynn indeed dislikes volunteer firefighters or the volunteer fire service as a whole, but you know what...who cares? Again, he is entitled to his opinions. Personally, i could care less who likes who and who doesn't. Many of his posts and comments aimed at the volunteer fire service have merit. I guess maybe for some people the truth hurts. Personally, i enjoy being a volunteer firefighter and helping the community (sorry if that sounds cliche). I have always tried to be the best firefighter i can be by taking as many courses as possible, training as much as possible and treating every day as a learning experience. People need to worry about themselves and how they can be a better person, firefighter, etc and improve themselves and their agencies. That said, stay safe and oh yeah, QTIP. Now lets get back to the original topic at hand please.

Staffing/manpower is a big issue for MANY agencies across the area. As others such as Bnechis have said, do something about it! If you know you have issues, put an automatic mutual aid plan into effect (not that M/A should be abused). As for CO calls; my dept sends the rescue only when there is a report of symptoms. If no symptoms are reported, a Chief will respond (non emerency) and assess the situation. We've found that a large percentage of CO calls turn out to be dead batteries in the detector. Why send an apparatus (or several) going code 3 for a dead battery? Maybe that's just my feeling? As for Somers, maybe the paid ambulance crew should carry structural PPE, hand tools, extinguishers, SCBAs, meters, etc. (insert sarcasm).

A couple of guys from my firehouse are taking EMT through MLSS starting very soon. I will check to see if there is a Paramdeic refresher being offered as well.

The new rig looks great, best of luck with it guys! Also, sweet shots by JT as always.

Barry, you are absolutely right. I live in New Windsor which borders Newburgh and i hate even driving through there. As for the FD, hope they can get the hell out of any situation before it comes to violence. My wife volunteers for Habitat for Humanity in Newburgh and often has to go to meetings there at night. She has a nice car and has had locals try and approach it while at lights, stop signs, etc. I have told her on more than one occasion, do NOT stop for anything if you dont feel safe. If need be, run the traffic light (when safe) and get the hell outta dodge. Ive told her that the LEOs would be understanding if she were ever stopped. I truly fear for her and i have gone with her on occasion, but im scared myself as i am unarmed and would be outnumbered. Ive said it before in other Newburgh related threads; that City needs MORE cops and firemen, not less! Again to the brothers and sisters of NPD and NFD, stay safe.
-
Rest in Peace Trooper Bailey, thank you for your service.
-
Hate to sound this way, but if i were a NPD officer on the night tour, i'd find a nice quiet place to "relax." Wouldnt go out of my way to do anything pro-active. Some residents held what was suppose to be a peaceful gathering that turned into an all out riot with several LEOs being injured. Absolute savages that have NO respect for anyone, let alone LE personnel. Some of the attendees even attacked the Firemen that came to douse an ILLEGAL bon fire. God bless the members of the Newburgh PD and FD!

You beat me to it! I stumbled on some of his helmets on eBay, but kept losing the bids. We ended up going back and forth through e-mail and on the phone for awhile, great guy. I finally got an 05' N5A and had him totally refurb it to look like an early 90's New Yorker. He did excellent work, in a timely fashion and reasonable price. Think I have pictures of my helmet somewhere on here. He is a City of Hartford fireman.
-
I sure hope not, im on my 2nd and cant afford a 3rd lol. Kidding aside, good question. If you dont beat the snot out of it (i.e. flashover simulator), it will last longer. Nice thing about leather helmets, amungst other things, is that they can be re-furbished when need be.
