  1. While looking through Michael Dicks incredible collection of FDNY pictures, i came across one that peaked my interest. It is a photo of 2 Firemen presumably taking a breather after a job. One of the men is Bob Athanas, who is now on R3 (Orange County resident as well). The other is Al Ronaldson who was with R3 at the time of this photo was taken. What peaked my interest was the fact that the caption of the photo states that FF Ronaldson was killed in the LOD on 03/05/1991. Being curious of the circumstances of the LODD, i did a quick search. My search came back with many articles and memorial pages dedicated to FF Al Ronaldson. One article in particular stated that the FAST concept was born out of the tragedy of FF Ronaldson's death. I found the article to be very interesting, so i thought i'd pass it on. May FF Al Ronaldson RIP. Link to the article: http://firerescuesafety.blogspot.com/2012/03/orgin-of-fast.html
  2. I thought 6 houses in 8 years meant he was a really great Fireman .
  3. Date: 11-10-12 Time: 0559hrs Location: IAO 833 Union Ave - Maroneys Cycles Frequency: Base-5 Units Operating: VGFD Car-2, E481, E479, NWEMS, NWPD, Stat-Flight Weather Conditions: Dark/cool Description Of Incident: Pedestrian Struck w/Medevac Reporters: BFD1054 0559hrs-Base-5 alerting Vails Gate; request to set-up a landing zone for an inbound Medevac for the construction worker struck by a truck. VGFD units responded to the Temple Hill School on Union Ave and set-up the LZ. Stat-Flight was overhead shortly thereafter and landed without incident. NWEMS 175(?) then arrived and turned patient care over to the flight crew. Stat-Flight then lifted off and was en-route to Westchester Medical Center. All VGFD and NWEMS units picked up and returned to service shortly thereafter.

VGFD M483 surveying damage at the beach directly across from the Point Lookout-Lido Firehouse. New York State DEC Police at a Hess station in Long Beach...tensions were very high. Credit of this picture collage goes to Lt. Oates, VGFD. It shows members of the Vails Gate and Point Lookout-Lido FD's, as well as the aftermath of a car fire w/extension as well as the damage in Long Beach.
  5. I heard about this incident while we were in Long Island. Crazy story, although not all that unbelievable in this day and age. People have no regard for other humans, much less LEO's. Speedy recover to the injured MOS and may his brethren catch the SOB asap! This sc**bag is lucky he didnt have the b**ls to strike the officer head on or he may have been made into Swiss cheese!
  6. Vails Gate Truck484 left around 6am and arrived at the EOC in Westbury around 8-8:30. They have since been detailed to the Oceanside FD. Members have said that they have power and conditions aren't too bad.
  7. I just got home from being deployed to Nassau County. We (Vails Gate FD) left with E478 for a 72 hour deployment on Thursday morning. We arrived at the EOC in Westbury around noon on Thursday and were quickly sent to the Point Lookout-Lido Fire department on the eastern border of Long Beach. The PLLFD lost much of its equipment out of their 2nd station where we were operating out of. At the height of the storm, there was 3-4 feet of water that came into the apparatus bays. Their members were very pleased to see us as they had been operating nonstop since the onset of the storm. Many of their members had personally lost almost everything they own from clothes to cars to their homes. They were in the best of spirits as they could be and welcomed us with open arms. The entire experience was a great example of the brotherhood to say the least. Our main objective was to cover calls for them in their district. During our deployment we ran everything from EMS to a car fire, chimney fire and a number of CO alarms. During our deployment, we were without running water (showers) and obviously no power. We were using bottled water to wash up the best we could as well as to drink. There was no heat in the firehouse, so we layered up and used as many blankets as possible. That said, and as other have said, be prepared if/when you are deployed. Bring plenty of clean socks (long socks), underwear and warm clothes. I would also recommend a sleeping bag, pillow and some blankets. We were relieved on Sunday by a rescue pumper and crew from Gansevoort, NY around noon. Vails Gate will be deploying again tomorrow at 6am with Truck484 and a full crew. No word on where they are going yet. To all those who have been affected by Sandy and to all first responder's and volunteers, stay safe and god bless! I have some pictures and may share some and more info when i get more time. For now, i'm going to enjoy some rest. *I will reiterate what Chris (helicopper) has said; these deployments are for 72 hours, not 12 or 24 hours. With that said, be prepared to be there for the entire 72 hours! Make sure your employers (for vols) are well aware of your plans, as well as your families. Make sure that you are properly packed with the items we have mentioned. Also, cellular phone service was shotty to say the least, so keep that in mind. Your loved ones may not be able to get a hold of you if need be.

  9. Here's a thought....call a tree service!
  10. Captain, great pics and thanks for sharing. Its always nice to see depts coming together for the common goal of learning and training. Foam operations are one of those things that many of us are not well versed in (IMO) as we dont get to "play" with it all that often. Looks like this was a very successful training experience, well done.
  11. Good find Seth! Great news for the CSP, even better that their being purchased with money made from seizures. Guess I didnt realize that Sig Sauer was out of N.H. They make a great gun and nice to see they're out o New England. The NYSP have been using Glock .45's for some time now, hopefully the new .45's sere the CSP well. Still hard to believe that many PD's are still using 9mm sidearms (IMO).
  12. RIP PO Olivieri, thank you for your service. Thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and the NCPD.
  13. 210, thanks for sharing the photos. I really like the new Chargers and i like your paint/lettering scheme. I especially like the sweet coffee mug, is that a standard option lol ? Best of luck with the new cars, may they serve you well.
  14. Thanks Captain. Just something that i was always curious about.
  15. Wow that is a sweet rig, very impressive indeed! Im sure it will serve Yonkers and beyond very well. As Dan said, the technology is astonishing. I am certainly no Haz-Mat guru, but this thing certainly has all the bells and whistles. Just a side question; i've always been curious, do YFD members have to obtain a class-A CDL to operate these tractor trailers or are they covered as they are emergency vehicles?

  19. Crime Cop, what a great story, thanks for sharing! Hats off to this young man for his showing of respect for a hero. If only more of today's youth could be as respectful and mature as him. RIP Trooper Fox
  20. Date: 10-15-12 Time: 1745hrs Location: Caesars Ln Frequency: Base-5 Units Operating: VGFD Cars 1, 2, 3, 7, R480, E481, E479, NWEMS, NWPD Weather Conditions: Raining Description Of Incident: Car down embankment w/Entrapment Reporters: BFD1054 1745hrs-Base-5 alerting Vails Gate; reported MVA w/Entrapment. VGFD Car-1 arrived on scene and established Command. Car-1 advised responding units that there was a single vehicle down an embankment and into a tree with (1) person entrapped. R480 arrived and used the winch and chains to stabilize the vehicle, Its crew then put the cutters and spreaders into operation to cut the roof and passenger-side door. E481 then arrived and assisted w/stabilization and staging of tool's. E479 was re-directed to Station-1 for coverage. Due to the rain at the time of the accident and throughout the incident, operations were made more difficult. The vehicle came to rest against a tree on the driver-side, but at a precarious position on the embankment. Crews had to use extra precautions when operating and moving equipment as footing became an issue due to the soft ground. VGFD, NWEMS and NWPD all worked together to make for a swift rescue and patient removal. The driver (sole occupant) was then removed to a backboard and placed in the care of NWEMS.
