So your profile says your between 18-20. I don't expect you too understand this as you are still maturing. I never said that just because you have 20 years of service you deserve to be CHIEF. I don't think that a 21 year old should be CHIEF. You can't tell me that there was not another qualified member of the FD that should have been CHIEF. Maybe nobody wanted the position except for this LAD and they gave it too him. Prob a bad mistake on their part. Tell your BROTHER CONGRATS. I don't have a COLLEGE education. I have had some COLLEGE COURSES prob enough to give me a degree but never formally walked down the isle. What I do have is TONS of STREET EDUCATION. LEARNING HANDS ON not from a BOOK. I have learned from books but I believe that ONE LEARNS BETTER HANDS ON. Two of my younger brothers have their Masters degree and are under 30. Does that make them smarter than me. NO WAY. You know why? Because I have seen more in the WORLD than they have. In their fields of work it makes them better, but that does not mean that they could do my job and be as good at it does it? And I couldn't do at least one of their jobs. The other one I could do in a HEARTBEAT, or lack there of. LOL And why would somebody Trust your brother at his young age? What makes your brother so much smarter than other people at his job? Sounds to me like you look up to your brother and I think that is great. I look down to my brothers to look up to them and am often JEALOUS of what they have achieved. But I chose my FORK IN THE ROAD and I went down it. I am not for 1 second ashamed or embarressed. In fact I have probably overcome more obstacles in my life then most people on this site. In my opinion somebody that is 21 has not earned the right to achieve the highest status at any job unless he starts his pwn job. Then of course he is boss. But as for LE, FD, EMS or any other SERVICE. 21 is too YOUNG.

Here is my take. Although it may not be a figherfighter issue, it works into many other fields. I personally don't think that ANYBODY 21 should be IN CHARGE OF ANYTHING. At 21 what do you know? Prob not as much as somebody that is 31 and been doing whatever job for 10 more years. I don't care if you did 1,000,000 more jobs. Doesn't make you smarter just puts you in the right place at the right time. Just so I am clear. If somebody joins the FD at 18 or whatever you need to be and then 3 years later another 18 joins the FD in 3 Years who should be more qualified to be CHIEF. Given that the same 2 people have all the same course under their belt but the NEWER MEMBER might have seen more fires? In case you can't follow me, 1 member is 24 and the othe member is 21 if my math is right. I would have to go with the 24 year old just based on MORE EXPERIENCE. You mean to tell me that there are NO MORE EXPERIENCED MEMBERS OF THIS FD THAN A 21 YO. WOW. I would have a hard time taking orders at work from anybody that has had LESS TIME on the JOB then me. It would also bother me if they were younger but I can't help that since people get hired at certain ages. But LESS TIME would really bother me. I like to think that everyday I go to work I learn something new. In fact in LIFE I like to think that. There are the people that are STEET SMART and there are PEOPLE that are BOOK SMART. BOOK SMART people get promotions, STREET SMART PEOPLE SAVE THE BOOK SMART PEOPLE. That is just my OPINION. BTW, I AM STREET SMART. Try and be BOOK SMART just take TESTS WAY TO FAST.

If you read articleds about the VA TECH shootings it should have made you sick the way the media portrayed the PD response. When the next shooting happens, and it will happen, I want the media to respond at the same time of the PD or even earlier and see what they do. MEDIA MAKES ME SICK.

Here is the deal as we do it. ACTIVE SHOOTER when we get there wait for another car then go to the sounds of where the shots are coming. We can't wait for SWAT because they can take a long time to gear up. We just had our training tonight and it goes well. The problem is that these Shootings are usually over before the POLICE GO INSIDE. As I stated in a previous post, the SHOOTERS ARE COWARDS. I took a seminar on the BESLAN SCHOOL MASSACRE in RUSSIA. Great book by Dave Giduck. He was there and said there was nothing that anyone could do. Col Dave Grossman is the leading expert in the Country along with Dave Giduck on school shootings. You should all read up on it. Just google either or and read up on their websites. Col Grossman is and excellent speaker and I recommend everyone see him speak.

Okay this topic should be closed. If we can't discuss a POLICE ISSUE, FIRE ISSUE or EMS ISSUE, we certainly can't discuss a RELIGIOUS ISSUE. This makes me sick. All the people that don't want lights up. The people that say Happy Holidays when it is Thanksgiving. What happened to Happy Thanksgiving. I say MERRY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYONE. If you happen to be JEWISH I will then say HAPPY HANUKAH(sorry for the spelling). That is where I draw the line. You won't get anything else out of me. As for the Manger, I don't care if you are Christian or Jewish. CHRIST or JESUS if want to call him that WAS A JEW can we agree on that? So that shouldn't bother anybody of the JEWISH RELIGION. Put a Menorah up next to the MANGER that won't bother me, but don't remove something because somebody all of a sudden feels offended. This COUNTRY IS GOING TO HELL IN A HAND BASKET. REMOVE THIS, REMOVE THAT. DON"T SAY THIS, DON"T SAY THAT. When is going to end? It makes me sick that you can't refer to certain HOLIDAYS in PUBLIC SCHOOLS ANYMORE. My wife is a CATHOLIC SCHOOL TEACHER AND I AM GLAD THAT THEY STILL HAVE CHRISTMAS THERE. Leave it alone.

Actually it is called doing a long form information and if I think that somebody is driving too reckless I most certainly write down the information. I also call the police depending what road I am on and if I don't have my family in the car and don't need to be anywhere I might even keep following them till the POLICE get there. Well the registered owner of the VEH would get the ticket. Let them take care of it with however was driving the car. If I can ID the Driver then they would get the ticket. So bring me to court, now you are being inconvienced and it might even make you think before DRIVING LIKE A MORON. I know many of cops who have done this before. Not sure of their out comes but I know it can be done. Don't think this is what I am doing when I am driving though. I don't. UNLESS I SEE SOMETHING REALLY BAD and that usually happens on the HIGHWAY. ROADRAGE is GENERALLY what PISSES ME OFF.
-
Well just so everyone knows, I drive around with a pen and paper in my car and I try and write down plate numbers if there is something I see really bad. Then when I get to work if I am still pissed, I will fill out the right paperwork and mail them their ticket. I don't do it that often because by the time I get into work after I witness the infraction, I don't feel like doing anything about it. I see it all when I am not working. Remember DRIVING IS A PRIVILEGE NOT A RIGHT.

I don't really think it matter what the response time was. Unless the POLICE were there in like 1 min this was still going to happen. This person went in with a plan, executed it, then took his own life. He was not going to be taken out by the COPS because he was a coward. Like Chris said we are now all trained to go right for the shooter. It would be better if we could have extra cars there, but if there is shooting going on then we are going in.

You beat me to the POINT. HELLO SPOOK. Yeah he probably worked for the DOD or the MILITARY and his mother prob did report that he was KILLED although she shouldn't have or didn't know the extent of his MILITARY SERVICE. Prob wasn't on a AUTHORIZED MISSION and now everyone is back peddling. Or it could be that I like CONSPIRACY THEORIES.

That's the one. Thanks.

You can only get SUDAFED from behind the counter at most pharmacies now ACROSS THE COUNTRY and your limitied to how many packs you buy. Illegal laboratory conversion of Pseudoephedrine (PSE), the active ingredient in SUDAFED®, into methamphetamine has become a major worldwide concern. As a responsible corporate citizen, we have been working in partnership with government, law enforcement and retailers to address the issue of continued consumer access to effective cold and sinus medicines. That’s why we’ve reformulated a new Pseudoephedrine-free line of decongestants called SUDAFED PE®, which will be sold at the shelf. Ask a store employee where you can find the original SUDAFED® line. Like original SUDAFED®, SUDAFED PE® relieves your tough nasal and sinus congestion, and SUDAFED PE® contains the active ingredient Phenylephrine, which cannot be used to make methamphetamine. As of September 30, 2006, original SUDAFED® and other medicines containing Pseudoephedrine will be placed “behind the counter,†however SUDAFED PE® will offer consumers a convenient “on the shelf†alternative.

We just got back from this place in RED HOOK. We go every year with a bunch of people. TAILGATE cut down the tree and then have some HOLIDAY CHEER. Not a bad ride. Don't remember the name of the place but it is OFF THE TSP at the RED HOOK EXIT. Make a LEFT and follow about 4 miles on the LEFT. GOOD TIMES>

Ok so I know that there is a topic sort of like this but I have to get this off my chest. Last night I am assigned a radar car which helps me get my numbers up to where they should be. Not that I don't usually write tickets, but I am more inclined when I do radar then when on patrol. Everything is going nice and smooth and as a matter of fact, I hadn't stopped anyone that was "OTJ" all night. Probably around 2000-2030hrs a car passed me doing 51-30 with a headlight out. I pull out of my spot. I generally give about 20mph over the speed limit depending on time of day, weather, location. I stop the car and the lady has her stuff ready. I don't even get out of my mouth License and Registration when she tells me her husband is "Det in NYC". I advised her the reason for the stop which was speeding and also advised her that she had a headlight out. She sais she knew and is supposed to get it fixed. I asked if you she had any ID proving that her husband was a COP and she just pointed to a Detective's Endowmnment PBA card taped above the Reg. I asked where he worked and she hesitated and said Long Island City. I asked what precinct and she said oh well he is retired. I said so he isn't a cop anymore then. With that she said well you guys usually respect that. I got really annoyed with that. Then she said you can call him if you want. I told her that isn't my job handed her back her sh*t and told her that would be the last time she would get a break from me. Now all of us in LE have run into this problem before. Sometimes we write the ticket only to go back to the car and find out that Their relative is OTJ. Happened to my wife one day. I don't understand why they just don't say it first. I guess it is how you say it. How about does it matter if my so and so is OTJ? What about proper ID. EVERYONE AN THEIR MOTHER HAS PBA CARDS. I know I could have written this lady but then I have to deal with her husband. I know that I could have been in the right saying have your husband call me and we can work something out. Just didn't want to be that guy. Guess I just want some other opinions.

I am in the middle of doing firearms training and stopped home before heading to the range. We finally put something in our SOP's about off duty/plain clothes officers and what to do if and when you show up to a scene and a firearm is displayed but no shield. I know that it is common sense to most of us about the "DON'T MOVE POLICE" then have them drop their weapon, walk away slowly, and ask for them to reach for their ID slowly and that BS. I guess I always wonder how many LEO's carry off duty. I know that their has only been a handful of times since I got out of the ACADEMY that I did not have an off duty gun with me. As a matter of fact I can probably count on 1 hand maybe 2. If you don't carry an off duty do you still carry your ID and BADGE? I look at this way. If you carry your ID and BADGE I assume that you have a firearm on your person. Don't want to debate, I know when you SHOULDN"T carry your gun but we all do it so let's stay away from that. Thanks.

It doesn't say how tall he was but even at 304lbs I don't think he should have been allowed in the class. HTN, ASTHMA as a pre existing medical condition and the DR said he could go to the FIRE ACADEMY? I am puzzled by this. I wonder if the DR can be sued and why didn't the FD step in say that he was at risk. They new the PHYSICAL DEMANDS he was going to have to endure. CLUELESS.
-
Well it looks like I am doomed now. Let me ask this question if this holds out to be true can I go out on DISABILITY? LOL I'm not going to start my treatment just yet.

Report was that he was shot in the groin and his FEMORAL ARTERY was lacerated and he lost lots of blood. Went to surgery and is now in a coma. They said it could have been a robbery gone bad but it sounds like it may have been a lovers quarrell according to the wound. That is just my guess.

Davis terminates Mount Vernon fire commissioner By DESIREE GRAND THE JOURNAL NEWS (Original publication: November 20, 2007) MOUNT VERNON - In his final weeks in office, Mayor Ernest Davis has dismissed Fire Commissioner Nicholas Cicchetti, whom he first appointed to a city post in 1999. The mayor called the move a budgetary one, and hinted that other positions could also be on the chopping block. He said the termination had nothing to do with politics or the planned closure of fire headquarters to deal with mold and other damage. "The commissioner is no longer with us, as of today," Davis confirmed yesterday afternoon. "He is seeking other opportunities and we are looking at a tough budget. We are looking for ways to save money." Davis lost the mayor's race earlier this month to Democrat Clinton Young, who was supported by the Democratic party establishment after beating Davis in the September primary. Cicchetti is the vice chairman of the city Democratic committee, leading some to speculate his firing was more an issue of loyalty than dollars. Cicchetti is a podiatrist who was the former president of the Italian Civic Association. He was a district leader for the city Democratic committee and has served on the board of directors at the Mount Vernon Neighborhood Health Center. In 1999 he was appointed deputy commissioner and the following year was named head of the fire department. He did not return calls yesterday seeking comment, but in an interview last week he spoke of Davis fondly, even calling him "my mayor." Davis would not comment on Cicchetti's work performance, except for a tepid summary. "I entrusted that department to him for eight years and we have had our ups and downs. He has done a reasonable job," Davis said. "But there comes a time, like it came for me, that you have to seek other avenues of expression." Deputy Commissioner Deborah Norman is expected to manage the 143-member department in the interim, until Young brings in his transition team. Norman is a retired Army master sergeant. Davis said the 2008 budget will be a lean one and said some departments might be merged to save costs. "For anyone who is mayor it will be a challenge," he said.

I am telling you the truth. Somebody, maybe a CIVILIAN that I work with happens to be in a VFD EX -CHIEF and has told me that he/she has not been verified. Whether that is true or not I am not sure. Just letting you know. Not trying to cause a problem.

Cop, Bravest husband save disabled woman from train crash -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BY PETE DONOHUE, ETHAN ROUEN and BILL HUTCHINSON DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS Friday, November 9th 2007, 4:00 AM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Print Email Suggest a Story Randi (L.) and Anthony LoCicero arrived seconds before a LIRR smashup. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- An off-duty NYPD cop and her husband, a volunteer firefighter, teamed up Thursday night to pull a disabled Queens woman from her car just seconds before it was slammed by a Long Island Rail Road train. Officer Randi LoCicero and her husband, Anthony, chief of the Franklin Square, L.I., volunteer fire department, were being hailed for their quick and courageous rescue. "It was a remarkable response by these two heroes, who used all their training to quickly evacuate the woman from the car and save her life," said Susan McGowan, a spokeswoman for the LIRR. The heart-pounding drama began about 5:40 p.m., when Patricia Rech, 63, of Floral Park, accidently drove her 2004 silver Buick sedan onto the tracks at the Roslyn Road railroad crossing in Mineola, officials said. The LoCiceros were stuck in traffic in his fire chief's truck when they were flagged down and alerted to the pending disaster. "We jumped out of our car and started running," Randi LoCicero, 34, a member of the NYPD since 1997, told the Daily News. As LoCicero and her 33-year-old husband raced to the stuck car, the gates of the railroad crossing started coming down. "We grabbed the lady, and she said, 'I can't walk without my crutches.' We just grabbed her and started dragging her down the street," said Randi LoCicero, who is assigned to the NYPD's gun range on City Island. As the westbound Ronkonkoma-to-Penn Station train bore down on them, Anthony LoCicero radioed his fire dispatcher to see if it could be stopped - it couldn't. The dynamic duo managed to pull Rech to safety just as the train barreled into the car, flipping it over and dragging it nearly 100 feet down the tracks, officials said. "Within 10 seconds the train slammed into the car," Randi LoCicero said. "We usually always get there after the fact, not when it's happening." With Michael White

I keep hearing that people have applied to be verified MULTIPLE TIMES and have not been verified. Not sure of their screen names though.

Here is my take. Studies say that working "THE WHEEL" (around the clock) instead of steady shifts takes 10 years off your life. Your body never gets adjusted to a normal sleep pattern. Of course most of the world WORKS DAYS, but in our LINE OF WORK whether it be LE, FD, or EMS we work CRAZY hours. I preferred to work Midnights in EMS because I like being up at night (and it was a little slower). When I switched jobs I quickly learned that "DAY TOURS" were horrible. Unless it was the weekend I hated them. Luckily I found somebody that hated midnights and soon after I was out of the ACADEMY I switched out of days. I still have to do them sometimes but it is usually my choice. I am not a morning person and I am not a COFFEE drinker either. Of course If I really had my choice I would do steady 4-12's. Don't have that option though. Now I sure we have all done more than 24hrs of work without sleep. If you think about it, it isn't that hard in the LINE OF WORK WE CHOSE. I am not allowed to do more than 16hrs straight without 8hrs off now. Unless their is an emergency, even then they will get you some sleep. I also have the Luxury of driving 2min to my house though when some guys I work with have more than an hour commute. That is where I see the most danger. Getting hammered with calls on 4-12's or Midnights then driving a long distance IS NOT GOOD. But since they made the HOUSING MARKET SO IMPOSSIBLE TO AFFORD IN WESTCHESTER some people choose to live far away. The body can take alot without sleep. That is why they train THE MILITARY mainly SPECIAL FORCES to stay up for long periods of time. Sleep Deprivation is stress that the body needs. We need to be able to react under stress. I also don't need much sleep to function either. 1-2hrs and I am good. For the longest time I was called the ENERGIZER BUNNY because I was always up. When my body finally tells me I have to get some sleep i get some sleep. It is also very hard for me to fall asleep. Even if I am off, I can't fall asleep right away. Hopefully agencies will look at this and start monitoring the hours that people work. Mostly in EMS when you are bouncing from JOB TO JOB.
-
If you can't do a midnight without falling asleep then you need help. For my WHOLE PROFFESIONAL CAREER whether it be EMS or LE I have done midnights. I acutally switch out of Days now to do Midnights. Yeah some of them suck and some are good. I don't know the facts of the case at all but I do know that the EMT DRIVER has to live with this for the REST OF HIS LIFE. You knew what business you were getting into whether it be LE, EMS, or FD. You knew that you would have to work 12's, 24's 36's and even 48's hours. In that time you can't tell me that you didn't shut your eyes though. NO JOB CAN DO THAT. We are not allowed to go more than 16hrs now without 8hrs off. Unless there is an emergency. Please let this guy get in the ground before you MONDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK.

Awesome, I really don't get to see what my TAX DOLLARS goes too. Let me take a look at all your SHINY equipment. Thanks.

And to set fire to a CHURCH NO LESS. Good Job.
