Here is how I see it. There are members just dedicated to the AMB portion of the FD. I guess these are the members that couldn't get out today. The other members are dedicated to the FD portion. They could get out to go to that alarm although if you really listened PATROL stated that only FD CHIEF was on scene reporting a malfunction. Now I am not sure if that means that the FD didn't get out or not. Right after that there was another aided call in the same JURISDICTION. Did not hear if the AMB got out for that. Did they have their PAID EMT this morn? I would like to believe that an AIDED call TRUMPS some alarm. Of course you are going to get people on here saying "WHAT IF IT ISN"T AN ALARM BUT A WORKING FIRE" WHATEVER. You tell me the odds of that happening in the day without somebody noticing. BOTTOM LINE. PAID EMS FOR THE WHOLE COUNTY OF WESTCHESTER.

Thanks for beating me to this post. You were alot nicer than I would have been. UNBELIEVABLE. Good way to start 2008.

Seth if you were hurt while you were working why are they giving you such a hard time paying your bills? You will get all of those taxes that you paid in your checks back. You do have to go to the COMPTROLLER and talk to them though. They should be able to help you.

If my shift starts at 0730, 0800, 1530, 1600, or 2330, 2400 then that is when my shift starts. I ALWAYS get to work 1/2 hr before the earliest tour. That means 0700, 1500, 2300. I go into the locker room, get changed and wait to get out onto the road. If for some reason work is crazy and they need me early, then I go out. That is when I am considered working I guess. Do you go to work dressed already as a FF? If I get called for OT, my time starts when I get the call. Does that mean if I get hurt on the way to HQ in an accident I am covered I have no idea. Seth why are they so MALICIOUS? And who is they? Just watch some TV during the day and you will find all sorts of INJURY LAWYERS. They can help.

Here is the way I see it at least from a PD standpoint. You have an EDP. VIOLENT or not your are probably going to need an ambulance to TXP the person to PSYCH. AMB gets dispatched and told whether to respond with caution to a set area already designated by the an OFFICER AT THE SCENE. At no time should that crew come even close to where the CRISIS is before hearing so by the PD. I guess the same thing goes for staging at a FIRE SCENE. If you don't want to get blocked in, then don't go anywhere near the scene. I know that if I get to a fire scene I park like a mile away.(Joking), but far enough that If for some reason I have to get out of there then I can. Not fun being blocked in by some fire trucks or fire hoses. I have seen that done. Maybe there should be a training night dedicated to just staging and what your function is at the scene. We can't plan every scene or where every scene will be, but we can try. On the way to any call I always run down certain scenario's. My friend MURPHY always seems to find me so I want to take him out of the EQUATION before I get there. Fastest Route for that time of day, Where to park, What to do if so and so happens. An old Teacher put that in my head and I will never forget it. You can also do this in your everyday life as well. BE PREPARED FOR THE WORST AND HOPE FOR THE EASIEST.

During the year some of us may have disagreed on certain topics. (probably an understatement.) That is never going change. We will all have our OPINIONS and we will all FIGHT FOR WHAT WE BELIEVE IN. I write from the heart and with lots of passion. In the end, WE ARE ALL CIVIL SERVANTS. Some do it for MONEY and some do it for FREE.(I still can't figure that out). We all have to look out for each other in the end because we know that the PUBLIC WON"T and MEDIA WON'T. So on this the EVE OF CHRISTMAS EVE I WISH ALL OF YOU WHETHER YOUR PAID OR NOT A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A VERY HAPPY, HEALTHY, and SAFE NEW YEAR in 2008.

Are you saying that every member of an FD should have lights and sirens in their cars? Maybe you just meant EX-OFFICERS. Even then what good is it if my house is on fire and they show up without water?
-
If you are CHief of an FD and are allowed to take the CHIEF's Car to work can you take it on personal errands with your family? I have seen this time and time again. Don't tell me that it is in case the "BIG ONE" happens if you are 20 miles away. Another thing, are you really going to respond to an incident if you have your family in the car? I have also seen this. Now they are stuck there. I guess they could call and have somebody pick them up but that is pretty stupid. I am all for you being Chief in a Town where you work and can respond. I am not for you wasting mileage and gas in the COUNTY because you feel it is a perk. Now onto the lights. UNLESS you are A CURRENT OFFICER you shouldn't have a RED LIGHT IN your car. I don't care if you were an EX-CHIEF or not.

If you told me that you were "ON THE JOB", I would assume that you were a COP not a Fireman. Be careful how you use that in your EVERYDAY LIFE.

FULL STORY: http://www.nyjournalnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll...EWS02/712190349 Back in 1994, I was driving out to PA to see a now EX of mine and while on RT 80, I huge chunk of ICE flew off an 18 wheeler and nearly came through my Sun Roof that was open. It smashed my windshield. I pulledl the truck over and got is info. The INS CO told me that it was an ACT of GOD and there was nothing I could do. Thankfully, I found a place in PA that could fix my windshield in like an hour. That was unheard of back then but I got lucky I guess. Unsecure Load huh, I am going to remember that.

You weren't being straight foward at all or I wouldn't have written about it. You quote "As far as PD, Their job is full of bone heads with guns. It is right there in black and white. You may have meant to write it a different way but you didn't. Maybe you should just proofread before you hit ADD REPLY. I still don't think that we should be paid the same. I think that I should get more. HA HA.
-
You don't need to be a Detective to figure mine out do you?
-
I didn't misunderstand. I just read what you wrote. In my opinion all EDP's require COPS to be there. Now if you don't like being an UNDERPAID EMT go to MEDIC SCHOOL, Graduate, and go work for a PRIVATE HOSPITAL IN NYC. Nobody is telling you to work for so CHEAP. I speak from experience so I understand where you are coming from. UNIONIZE is the only way to go. Even if it is with the CSEA which is HORRIBLE in most places. Private companies obviously don't want that.
-
Bone heads with guns. Nice. So the next time you are getting your a** kicked by some drugged up EDP, don't call the PD to back you up. Just because you chose the wrong profession does not mean that you should be putting one down that has been around for Hundreds of years. You know what? I am going to my Over $40hr job now. Have funny doing lift assists all day in the cold.
-
I hear what you are saying. I think that we ALL DESERVE what they PAY A-ROD. I can go out and stand at the plate 3 times a game and strike out. That would be easy to do for $275mil. This Country is so backwards it is not even funny.
-
Calm down there. There is no way that Medics or EMT's deserve more than COPS or Fireman make an hour. I am sorry. Now of course that matters for where you work and how much work you do but not as much as COPS/FIREMAN. I do believe that the PAY SUCKS for EMS PROFESSIONALS. Having done that for a LONG TIME, I know what it is like. But $50 and hour come on. Most COPS/FIREMAN don't make that an hour. Unless of course you are a YPD/YFD, Clarkstown PD, NASSAU/SUFFOLK COUNTY PD. There might be a couple more in there. What if your life is not saved in CARDIAC ARREST, A.P.E, Trauma? Does the family get you paycheck for what you didn't do? I do belive that ALL EMS should get raises. I would never work for $10 and hour as an EMT or less then $25 as a MEDIC.

Mayor Amicome was just on News 12 with a 1 on 2 interview with the 2 BIGGEST MORONS on TV Brian Conybear and Janine Rose. They are so clueless in asking questions. I actually got mad. The Mayor was spot on with his answers saying that it is cheaper to have them stay for OT rather than Hire a couple of guys because they have to go to the ACADEMY and stuff like that. Chris192 hit it in his post. I wish on my job we had OT like that. Although I wouldn't take all the shifts, I would definitely take a bunch to give more back to my family.

Finally the snow is coming down. Great that I have to work at 1500. We did a training back in 2001-02 I think at one of our high schools in response to the Columbine shooting. We had ESU called in from GPD and I think COUNTY. Somehow I got stuck as the outside radio guy. Prob because because I don't get nervous on the RADIO and my EMS background with some MCI's. Went pretty well. My Chief was pretty impressed that I didn't lose my cool and was able to know where all the different players were at all times. That I see as the biggest problem if it happens in WEST. You may have bosses that SHOULD NOT BE in IC. If they can screw up TRAFFIC on a 2 car minor MVA then they shouldn't be at a scene as CHAOTIC as this. What I would like to do and COL Grossman suggested this is see how the security around the schools are here. See how far you get into the school before somebody stops you and asks what you are doing. Some schools have Resource Officers. Now I am not sure what they exactly do. Do they carry guns? They are the first line of defense in a situation of this calibre and will most likely be the first CASUALTY. These are all things that I think about. Well if they offer a FAST ROPE class anytime soon I am there.

Sleepy Hollow firefighter expelled for fighting with colleague By SHAWN COHEN THE JOURNAL NEWS (Original publication: December 12, 2007) SLEEPY HOLLOW - The village board of fire wardens last night expelled firefighter Patrick Hayes for fighting with a colleague at a fire scene, an incident for which Hayes also faces a criminal charge. "It was bringing discredit to the department and causing disharmony," Fire Chief John Korzelius said in explaining the decision to expel him. The board voted 10-2 in favor of expulsion, well over the two-thirds majority required. Hayes, 25, was suspended shortly after he was accused of repeatedly shoving fellow Sleepy Hollow firefighter Miguel Valle at a Nov. 24 fire scene in Tarrytown. Valle fell and injured his knee, requiring hospital care. Hayes had five days to appeal the suspension, but never did. He also chose not to show up for last night's hearing, where he may have had the opportunity to challenge the ruling, Korzelius said. Valle did attend. Hayes faces a charge by Tarrytown police of second-degree harassment, a violation that is punishable by a possible fine and up to 15 days in jail. Korzelius said the expulsion was in keeping with the department's policy of no tolerance for workplace violence. "When we're at a fire scene, we're under a microscope, so to speak, and we do conduct ourselves professionally," he said. "If you do anything to bring discredit or disharmony to the department, you will be brought up on charges, much like he was."

You laugh, Col Grossman suggested that. He wants all officers to be trained to do stuff on and out of HELO's. I would be game for that. It will never happen, but that is the fastest response time. We are all about that it will never happen here, and that is when it is going to happen. I am not even sure that it is going to happen in a school. With the recent Mall shooting the Westchester and Palisades is a good target. And then their was the church shooting in CO this past week. Everyone thought that I was nuts when I said I carried OFF DUTY WHEREVER I GO EVEN TOO CHURCH. Of course that Parish had about 10,000 members or something like that. I think we are going to start training or at least doing dry runs in some of the Elem and High schools in the future. I would like to do it with school in session just so you can see exactly what you are dealing with. Admin at the schools don't want that. Oh well, we will keep rolling the dice.

We train for teams of 4 in a diamond formation and teams of 3 and 2. It is not really practical that we will have 4 PO's there if there is an active shooter. We are lucky though. One High School is literally about 500yds from our HQ. Another High School is about 1.5miles from HQ along with an ELEMENTARY SCHOOl. We would be able to get support help from HQ. But if you are out in what we call the BOONIES you could be waiting a little while for another car.
-
Once again CHRIS you hit it on the head. We HAVE to give 8hrs a year to ACTIVE SHOOTER with SIMUNITIONS. Some of us just did the training on Thurs night. It gets pretty intense. One of the Biggest gripes about the VA TECH shooting was how long it took for them to enter the building. The public didn't know that the doors were chained shut by the SHOOTER. In Beslan the biggest thing was that it turned into a HOSTAGE SITUATION and the TERRORISTS that had the school knew what they were doing. Families started showing up and soon half the town was there. That was a problem for POLICE and other Military responders. ALS Col Grossman's books are awesome. To hear him speak was great although I don't agree on some of his stuff he right that SOCIETY now and what kids are doing with their spare time is not like when we were growing up. I am not going to blame it all on VIDEO GAMES and TV/MOVIES because I grew up when VIDEO GAMES and the likes were getting good. Parents have to limit how much time KIDS play and watch TV. It seems kids don't go out anymore and play games. TOO SAD.

I am not sure about the FD but you have to have at least 5 years as a PO before you can take the SGT's EXAM at my job. I think that may be for everywhere in the STATE. This topic started with an article about a 21 YO Fire Chief. I don't agree with his age and being in charge of a DEPT. That is my opinion. I stick to that. We can go on and on with any kind of a job. Let me make something clear. There will be bosses on my job younger than me at some point I am sure. I am not saying that I won't RESPECT them if they earned their POSITION. I respect all bosses whether I like too or not. I don't want this turning into ONEEYE likes to BUCK the system. That is not me. As with EMS, I take my job as a PO very seriously. Maybe one day I will get made and then I don't have to worry about this topic anymore. So I will leave it at this. IF SOMEBODY HONESTLY DESERVES the JOB as BOSS OF BOSSES. That too me means CHIEF and they are young I guess we can't say anything. But that person will always be under a microscope especially if something happens.
-
Maybe where you are you wait for ESU but we are trained to go for the shooter if it is active. We don't have the luxury of waiting for ESU.

Just so you know, I left the MILITARY aspect out of my previous posts because I do BELIEVE that they can be great leaders at a young age. They also have been trained and probably thrown right into the thick of things where they have to think on their feet and improvise or possibly die. I don't know ages of ranks in the MILITARY but I am pretty sure that there are no 21 year old ADMIRALS or GENERALS. I may be wrong but I will go out on a limb. If you are talking about a CHIEF of anything then that would be the HIGHEST RANK just like in the MILITARY. So that is my point. I don't know what age you should be to a CHIEF of ANYTHING. There are some young police chiefs out there right now. Bronxville just make a 39 year old chief but I believe he has 18+ years experience so he is probably qualified for the job. Do you think that everyone on that job that is older than him will enjoy taking orders? Maybe, maybe not. I am not saying that being 21 you don't know a thing about PD, FD or EMS. I am saying that at 21 you still have LOTS to learn. I have seen lots of people older than me in EMS and LE that I would NEVER LET WORK ON OR HELP ME. If someone has been in a service less time then me how can they know more than me? As for experience maybe they came from a different place but if they are brand new then I know that I know more than them. That is the way life is. You learn as you go. As usual CHRIS192 puts a good spin on the TOPIC. Good thinking about the PRESIDENT. Some would even say that 35 years old is probably still too young for this day and age PRESIDENT.
