  1. I am a little confused. Your Dept had a budget before 9/11/01 right? Then after that horrible day your budget was decreased? It didn't at least stay the same? I don't know what other PD's do but I know that we have people that write letters for grant money. We are not a large Dept and we don't look to take what we don't need, but the Federal Gov't wants to give that money away to fight the WAR ON TERROR. Who better to get that money than all involved in LE? So you say that the branching out is in the NYC area that doesn't mean all PD's are taking away from FD resonsibilities. So FD should be taking care of all the HAZ MAT stuff? That means send some of your men/woman to TERRORISM classes. There is no doubt in my mind that the next attack on any place in this COUNTRY is going to be a Chemical Attack. Who is going to get there first? Heck, everyone should be trained in this. I read the paper everyday. Is there something specific I should be reading? It doesn't really say that Civil Service is forced to hire unqualified personell. Unless I'm not reading the correct section. I didn't mis read you at all. As a matter of fact I can see exactly where you are coming from. I have great respect and pride in being a Policeman, but I also have great respect for FIREMAN and EMS workers as well. Well at least most. This post should have been a couple of threads ago. Like I stated above. Federal Money is out there. It isn't a secret you just need to know how to get it for your Agency.
  2. To all moderators: My intention was not to make this a PD versus FD issue. However, certain posts were written that described certain things that LE was doing to the FF service. I wanted a couple of answers to those questions. This is what I got. In case you are a little confused I thought I would help you out. For second time, how is the FD underappreciated after 9/11/01? For the Third time, how have PD's branched out into area's that FD's used to be in charge of? In order for this to be a rebuttle you would have had to answer my questions first so I could REBUTT what you were saying. I just asked you a couple of questions. You did however state that I live under a rock and that LE has been hiring unqualified personell for sometime now. That's AWESOME Being that I AM NOT in the Fire Service I was asking some questions that I don't know the answer too. It wasn't to start a war, it was to try and understand what you guys were talking about. And I thought I was bitter at work.
  3. First of all, I don't live under a rock. I am not in the Fire Service and I stated that. Are you saying that people in LE are not qualified to do their jobs? Nice dig. You didn't really answer any of my questions. What duties have PD taken from FD? Sorry that you feel that the tests are being watered down. You should probably tell the people that do the hiring of your problems. Being that I am not in the Fire Service you should write a post that would make me understand. Being bitter does not mean that you can take it out on LE. Sorry you hate your job so much.
  4. What kind of attack has the FD been under? Who says that they are forced to hire under qualified personell? Before 9/11/01 was the FD necessary and appreciated? What do you think has changed since that horrible day? What PD's are growing? Every PD I look at seems to be under manned as well. Maybe Federal money is going to some PD's but could that be for the WAR ON TERROR? What does PD do that they have never done that the FD has always done? I am just curious. I have not chimed in on this topic because I am not a FF. Either the whole COUNTY should go PAID or just the CITY's should stay paid. I think to have some paid or partially paid dept's like above is ridiculous. I am sure that many VFD's do more runs then at least 2 of the names on the above list. Unless of course they have implemented AIDED cases to their runs. FDONTHEJOB it seems that you are turning this into a PD vs FD discussion. Is that your intention? MODERATOR NOTE TO ALL: This WILL NOT become a PD vs FD rant or debate. Let's keep it professional and objective.
  5. That is pretty cool thanks. I never realized it but behind the Kensico Dam in the reservoir under the water it says 2008 Google. I wonder what else could be under that water? Must dive down and see. Now does that mean on an Incident Alert we can hit a link that will take us to that map but where the Incident is? That would be cool.
  6. I have a pair of "skell gloves" but I rarely take them off my bag. They are a pain in the butt to put on and unless I put them on while driving, they don't go on. When I frisk somebody I always ask if they have anything that I can stick myself or stick them with. Meaning, if I get stuck then so are you. Most of the times they tell the truth. I don't go into the pockets until I feel the outside and manipulate the pocket to the point where I can describe from the outside what is in the inside. IE, keys, lighter, matches, money, etc...
  7. How about a point system. Let the Moderators judge how many post points a member should receive. Like on Iron Chef. The Chefs are judged on Appearance of dishes, Taste, Originality, and something else. I know this makes more work for the Moderators but if you want an ELITE status then you will think twice about the quality of your posts. See the problem there is people will just try and start thread for the points. I try and start threads that I read about or think about. I want the most feedback on what I start. For legit posts brought on by all members. Photounit what I write on here is what I would say to anyone's face. I am not hiding behind a screen name. I choose not to post my name because of my occupation. If somebody wants to know who I am so bad, they can PM me and maybe I will tell them. We have had this discussion before about real names.
  8. I don't know if you can change this but sometimes as above, I will be typing and somebody will be post about something that I might be typing about. It then looks when I post that I copied what the other person was saying. As Moose stated and I do believe great minds think alike that 1-2 word replies gives a curve to the ELITE MEMBER STATUS. Had I known that MOOSE was going to post that, I wouldn't have. Maybe a refresh button that will let me read while I am posting. I guess that is asking too much. Hey chalk me up for another post. 500+ to go. lol
  9. I am an ALPHA MEMBER. Under your new conditions that would demote me to a Verified Member. I only post on topics that I feel close to home. And I don't usually post 1 or 2 words either. With the excpetion of above. I just had to agree with not posting our real names. If I did, I would have 1 million posts. (Said in Dr Evil voice with pinky to lips). I have no idea how many times I log onto this site. MANY, MANY times a day. I read some topics that I would generally not read but I don't post unless I know what I am talking about. I guess I don't want to be that guy to post just to post. And that happens here alot. If you look there will be a post then another post by the same person 1 min later. I can see if you forgot something then I would put sorry, but I forgot this point. Or just wait till you post again and make the point you forgot. Just my .02cents. This site is about Learning and getting Knowledge from one another whether we like what we read or not. It isn't about who has the most posts and who is called what. What do you get out of being and ELITE MEMBER? I say 1 bash per month without being deleted or getting a strike against you. LOL Just kidding. I think people get penalized who don't get to read and post all day as well. Some of us have the luxury of being able to log on all day and night. Well not me all the time. I will prob not post till Sun after I go to work later. Well maybe around Mid, but after that till Sun. So come Mon I will sit down and read what I missed. My prob is that I will read them all then reply to everything I missed. I don't know how to quote from one person and another person in the same post. So I will wait till the end, get my thoughts and then wrap everything into one POST. Not read, make reply to one person, then read and reply again. I think you see where I am going.
  10. Here Here.
  11. It is great if you can get 2 Agencies to train together. We train with other PD's but not with any FD's whether Paid or Vollie. We did in the past but haven't in recent years. I am pretty sure that we have contacted 60 Control and they know that we have a Dive Team. Like I have said in the past, it is very rare that we are all working at the same time. But, if we trained with other Agencies, we wouldn't need a full team. We could get to the scene and be tenders, back up divers, 90%ers, whatever. We are not about to step on toes and by know means do we think that we are better than anyone else. But there are more resources out there. I would like to see the times of this call. I am sure the 911 call came in after the van was in the water. Not sure of repsonse times to the "pond" either. All that makes a play into rescue times. It was said many times. This was a terrible tragedy. Should it have happened? Prob not. I wonder how many times the City was asked to put up some kind of barrier around the "pond".
  12. So the Veh rolled from that spot into the water? That looks like a far distance to roll. Did the kids put the car into gear? Was the veh running? I am now very curious as to what happened. Going to have to search for answers. Thanks for the info.
  13. That was awesome thanks. I am going to assume that looking at the map on google, the East side of the "pond" is where the van went in right? That clears up alot that there is a dam and a spillway flowing through there. Not usually a current in a pond.
  14. Well this was a pond in July so I don't know what the water temp was but I bet it was prob 60+ degrees. Now that differs from surface temp to bottom depth. Of course colder on the bottom so that could be possible. So there is a 10-15 min air time with two divers ready to go. I don't know how long the veh has been in the water but lets just low ball it and say 10 min before NYPD was called. When they get there it would have been 20 min. Do we know if the windows were open? If they were, those KIDS drowned. You can get the DIVERS in the water of course and do a cursory search.
  15. What would the flight time be from NYC? Divers are on board the Heli already? If so, then they you need a last known point of entry. You need to know if the windows were opened and the car flooded. The article said that there was a strong current. In a pond I don't know how that is, but that's what it says. Given that, you have to figure that the van had moved from it's original spot. How is the visibility? The veh must be located first then the rescue can happen. Although there have been cases of resuscitation after being submerged, I would generally say more in the colder water than in warmer water. Does anyone know the down time of the van before help arrived?
  16. That was awesome. Felt like I was back in High School.
  17. That doesn't seem any different than what I see in WESTCHESTER. They just don't have a building or a name to call themselves. You all know who you are that get in your cars from a FAR DISTANCE to go an watch fires.
  18. A tragedy indeed. The other tragedy is that the POLITICIANS are blaming the PD and the FD when it appears had they had the barriers installed this would not have happened. Nevertheless, children were involved and it seems that whenever this happens POLITICIANS will use this to exploit anything they can. I hate POLITICIANS and have know need for them. When they need votes, you can bet that they will ask the PD and the FD. I hope you guys make a stand and voice your opinion. But playing Devil's Advocate I can ask what kind of water training does the FD have? How many Lakes, Rivers, etc...? Would it have made a difference? I don't know. Does the PD have a full time DIVE TEAM? Being a member of my PD's Dive Team I can tell you that it takes time to assemble the TEAM. Even if a PD has a full time DIVE TEAM I don't think it would have made a difference. I would hope any sensible person reading that article would understand that only if the EMERGENCY WORKERS were on scene and in the water when it happened would make the only difference. If the VEH was submerged and the current was bad it would still have been hard to rescue. If you can, keep us informed as to what is happening. Have there been any lawsuits against the CITY?
  19. Well as usual the Weather People can't get it right. They said it was supposed to start between 1700-1900hrs. I would rather it start early and get called in for OT then to go in on straight time and deal the morons still out driving. Oh well. I love driving in the snow.
  20. You know your a buff when you post things in the thread you know your a buff. LOL
  21. That is awesome. Can we keep this all the time. You can make things interesting by reading posts and hearing the writer speak with a Brogue. Céad míle fáilte romhat
  22. Are you kidding me? A DEPT of 18 needs a COMMISSONER? That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Not to mention a waste of over $100K. How come the Mayor can't be the voice of reason for 18 people? Even if the Mayor can't, the Chief should be able to control 17 other people in his DEPT. WHAT A JOKE. I am not saying that ELMSFORD PD is a JOKE. I am saying that appointing a COMMISSONER is a JOKE.Elmsford appoints police commissioner, promotes new chief By Gerald McKinstry The Journal News • February 12, 2008 ELMSFORD - The village Board of Trustees last night appointed its first commissioner of police and promoted a new chief. Chief Frank Rescigno, a 24-year veteran, was appointed to the newly created commissioner's post. He'll make $129,000 a year overseeing the 18-member department. He's been chief for four years. Sgt. Thomas Fennell, an 18-year veteran whose father was a chief, was promoted to chief, contingent upon his passing the March exam for that position. He'll make $110,000 a year and be second in command. Fennell will even use his father's badge, Mayor Bobby Williams said yesterday. Both men started as patrolmen with the department. Williams said the changes would not affect the budget and were done to give the department greater control over its operations, especially with personnel matters, such as hiring officers, and other daily operations. "It streamlines the work. It takes a lot of pressure off of us," Williams said of the village board, which was collectively functioning in the role of commissioner. A referendum passed last week, 117-39, to create the commissioner's position.
  23. Actually you can't on this site. As I have found out the HARD way in the past. But what you write is true. People are REALLY PARANOID that they are being talked about. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me. Say what you want about me. I won't lose sleep over it. That's if I can ever fall asleep. LOL
  24. How would it weed out the bad seeds? You can just give a fake name. How are you going to prove who anybody is? Unless you start getting SS #'s, Drivers License#'s or start doing RETINAL SCANS. Just leave it as is.
  25. How about having a FUNDRAISER? You don't always have to use TAX DOLLARS to get money. Think outside the box. One of the local FD's has an XMAS party every year and they give away $10,000.00. They don't just give it away they sell raffles and then pick 6 winners. I am not saying that you do that, but you could do something like that. How much could uniforms cost? EMS doesn't have the camaraderie that PD and FD has. I generally hang with people from my profession and not just my job either. I have met some really good people in LE. I have lots of FF friends as well. I try and make it point to attend EVERY 10-13 party and I am not sure of the 10 code for a FF down but if there is a party for that I go and give my money as well. I think I have only missed 1. Not just in WEST. If I hear of one, I tell people at work and we go. Not only to drink, but to network and too show support. I very rarely see people that I used to work with in EMS. Probably because they are working 8 jobs to make ends meet. I can see how it would be difficult dealing with some people in EMS though. If someone is not approachable then it makes it hard. Some just want to stay within their agency. That makes things hard in EMS. You don't have to like someone but you can at least be cordial. I guess what I am trying to say is get together with other agencies. Find out what they do to raise money. I am sure that some PD's and FD's hate when other agencies come into their jurisdiction. But we don't fight about it. Do we? Maybe just lots of bitching. Can I say that?
