Any more info on possible future trades? Who are they going for after clearing the cap? This Heatly guy, is he good? I have not been around the hockey circuit in some time now. Im a Rangers fan who's last game viewed included players like Leach, Richter, Beukeboom and others. I have been too busy to watch so please keep us posted on this. Thanks for sharing.

I am from Long Island and belonged to the Northport Fire Dept. They had a houseman but he was an employee of the Village Highway Dept and was hired as a Janitor with cross training in dispatch operations. He stayed in house for his whole shift, cleaning the station, maintaining tools and equipment, filling bottles, and when the emergency line rang he answered the call, took the info, and dispatched the call from the locked radio room. He did not respond to calls, he dispatched the dept to calls and than resumed his janitor work when the call ended. All of our housemen were also volunteer members of the dept, but while on duty as houseman they were paid by the village highway dept and were employees of that dept, not the fire dept. This was the same for most of the surrounding departments in Suffolk County, not sure about the entire Island. This was also 16 years ago before I moved to Upstate NY, not sure if its the same now. Hope this helps explain some more about what a "Houseman" is.

I dont get it...Why Riot?? Your team won, great, congratulations, good for them...does it mean that the fans need to riot, injure, loot, and destroy? Maybe they should stop professional sports until the fans can grow up more? It makes no sense to me...sorry, end of rant! LOL

Chris, it sounds worse than it is but it still is not sufficient to cover the needs of the county; here is a brief breakdown of how ALS goes in our county. We have 2 FT medics that are in fly cars in different parts of the county. They are on salary like merlin said, and are toned out by county dispatch. If available they sign on the radio as responding. If they take a vacation or are sick they call the dispatch and advise they are out of service, and the other coordinator takes over. Than, the second line of ALS is provided by the local Paid ambulance who has one paramedic rig in the county. If they are not available than some of the local squads have their own ALS providers, like my squad, we have one medic and several EMT-CC's now that can run on their own. AFter that...it goes down to tightening the sphincter, lighting up the lights and going like hell for the nearest appropriate facility and hope that an ALS link up with other agencies in other squads or the next county can meet us enroute. I have done a call like this years ago, with a patient having a miscarriage. She was bleeding so bad and we had no ALS. The next squad over only had an intermediate and he couldnt get a line on her, so we booked for Cooperstown Hospital and had Otsego county, to the west of us, tone out for any available ALS to meet us enroute. We picked up a medic about 15 minutes out from the ER and he got the lines. Through the County EMS Coordinators and the local CIC's and CLI's, which is than signed off by the med control doc. He is right though, some of the med control people are hard to get a hold of. This I dont know. I was never too crazy about the whole billing thing with the volunteer agencies, plus the annual fund drive...didnt make sense to me.

Oh oh...dont even get me started on this! LOL This is another good topic, and one that is abused quite a few times near me. I have seen a squad call the bird for a rollover MVA before they arrive on scene to find the pt out of the vehicle already but they STILL wait...30 MINUTES for the bird to land?!?! They could have been 3/4 of the way to the trauma center but they waited and it took an additional 10 minutes for the bird to land and crew to enter the ambulance, another 15 minutes for the crew to assess and start their treatments, and another 10 minutes to load the pt in the bird...when they could have been at the trauma center and half way back to the station before the bird even landed. Call the bird for extended extrications...special rescues like water rescue, burns, trench rescue or industrial entrapments that will require time to get the patient out but will yield injuries that require special care like burn centers or hyperbaric chamber. People abuse that service way too much, and may possibly be keeping it from another squad that may actually need it.

Awesome looking rigs. Best of luck to you with them. I love the pump panel option.

My first attempt to catch a job was on Easter Sunday while visiting my in-laws for the holiday, we were right around the corner when Port Chester was toned out for a report of fire in a duct, possible extension to roof fan. My father-in-law made excellent time to get on scene but I was only able to get these truck shots, and a few people shots. Give me advice, enjoy.

And in his nomex house slippers no doubt!! lol

Is this you? Forgot I had this pic too.

Also, I forgot to mention, I took these shots from the pickup truck through the windshield, thats why they off a little. Thanks for the comments.

Well, I think that support should be offered to the guys in Chicago who are probably going insane with guilt right now, and let them know we are behind them. Mistakes are made every day, and people learn from them. I wonder how many people here have seen a body burnt in a fire? I have seen 4...It isnt pretty, and it isnt obvious sometimes either, sometimes they are unrecognizable. I will keep the gang in Chicago in my thoughts, and my condolences to the family of the victim, may he Rest In Peace.

Cant quite make out what type it is? Nice looking rig though, simple and straight forward.

Rest In Peace, it sounds like he was very well liked and will be sorely missed, take comfort in each other, family and friends...

I was Full Time EMS back in 1998, right before I lost my EMT-CC card. (Actually, I let it go, didnt loose it) I was an ALS provider making only $7.50/Hour...You think $20/hour is bad?? What we made was disgusting to say the least, and we did both 911 calls and inter facility transports, and ran around the clock. We were lucky to get any sleep at all. I wasnt going to take that treatment any more so I went to PT status and got another FT job. EMS Is fine for people just out of High School or dont have families to support, but once you have a kid, mortgage, etc etc, its a different ballgame all together. I just recently however received a raise through my PT EMS gig and went from $7.96/hour to $10/hour...a Little better, but still not even close enough to what EMT's and Medics should get. Do you know whats even worse? The person standing in the middle of the road with an orange flag, no High School diploma, no formal training, and certainly no ability to save a life, directing traffic around construction sites gets $20-30/hour??? THATS what gets me even madder than before. Paramedic; College level training+State Exams+CME credits+recertification every 3 years+professional conventions+SAVING LIVES= $7-20/hour. Flag Man; High School Drop Out+no trade skills+standing in road waving arms= $20-30/hour...Hmmmmm, am I, as a junior in high school, going to pass any more tests? Or just sign up for the nearest construction firm?? I agree with what ALS stated as well, it wont get better as long as the private companies are in charge and lining their pockets.

This has been a great thread guys, its helping me out a lot with learning how to better manage the double clutch. Out of our 3 engines, 2 are double clutch, our tanker is double clutch, the rest are automatics. This brings up a question of mine to add to this discussion. Why is it that some departments feel its necessary to have these double clutch standards instead of purchasing automatics? Especially in a volunteer service, where 95% of the membership has possibly never even driven a standard vehicle let alone a large, double clutch engine or ladder, so why would they want to make it more difficult to get qualified drivers? You would think they would want to get automatics, this way training could be spent a majority of the time on Pump operations and water supply. Thanks again for making this a good thread...what EMTBravo is all about.

No framing at all? Not even a basic skeleton to hold this crap up? Is it all glued together(The panels I mean) to make the house or is there nails or screws? What area was this house being built in, do you know? Looks scary, just another thing to worry about now...

I was waiting for you to reply! You have enough trucks and experience, you should start a driver school for fire trucks! I would be your first student to fail...I MEAN take the course! LOL I cant drive double clutch to save my life, tried numerous drill nights and just could not down shift without having to come to a stop and start all over again...(Good thing we have the fair grounds to go and drive on at drill nights!)
