EMT Fly Car by EMS Zones Before I begin let me just start by saying this is an idea I have based on years of experience in EMS and also just by listening to a Radio/Scanner. It's no secret here in Westchester that a lot of VAC's (Volunteer Ambulance Corps) have staffing issues. Let's do something about it! I am NOT here to bash ANY agency, this is an idea and I would like YOUR feedback. Mutual Aid...... When does it become abuse? Should one VAC have to cover calls for another on a regular basis? When does it end? "Hey John, we covered 3 calls today for ________ VAC they suck, they can't get out for anything" DO YOU AS CAPTAIN WANNA HEAR THAT? Why not put our heads together and try to come up with a plan? I will use Westchester County EMS Zone 7 for example. (Again, this is for example purposes only) Zone 7 City, Town, or Village: Village of Buchanan Village of Croton Town of Cortlandt City of Peekskill Town of Yorktown Covered By: Cortlandt Community VAC Croton Fire Dept. Peekskill VAC Mohegan VAC Verplanck Fire Dept. Yorktown VAC You have 6 Ambulance agencies covering the area. How many Ambulances is that? Approx. 15-16? Why not utilize those 6 agencies in this zone to staff an EMT Fly Car 24/7 with an EMT ?? The EMT Fly Car would respond as needed and assist with filling a crew or supply additional manpower at an incident. If needed the Rig could roll w/ Driver Only! Think of how great it would be for an EMT to gain experience in a BLS Fly Car. Is it worth a try? If this happened how many of you would Volunteer one shift a week on this EMT Fly Car if one was put in your area? Next time you wanna buy that "Officers Vehicle" how about using it as the EMT Fly Car to help out? (EXAMPLE STAFFING) Monday = Cortlandt VAC's day to staff the Fly Car Tuesday = Croton FD's day to staff the Fly Car Wednesday = Peekskill VAC's day to staff the Fly Car Thursday = Mohegan VAC's day to staff the Fly Car Friday = Verplanck FD's day to staff the Fly Car Saturday = Yorktown VAC's day to staff the Fly Car Sunday = Open / Rotation of 2nd Day FEEDBACK?

OK, LET'S GO TO THE VIDEO TAPE! I see the NYPD Police Officer standing in the middle of the roadway with his partner. The PO appears to move slow as the Bicycle approaches, The PO then seems walk quicker right into the path of the Bicycle. It also appears that the Bicyclist is clearly steering AWAY from the Police Officer to the far left. Pay close attention to the Slow Motion! The video does have audio, I was thinking maybe the guy on the bike yelled something to the PO "Hey $#@&"! but it does not sound that way. Something to consider: - Did the PO see the Bicyclist do something seconds before that the Camera DIDN'T pick up? - Did the Bicyclist just try to run someone over? Hit another PO? - Did the PO get a call over the Radio "Hey, Grab Him" If so, were his actions JUSTIFIED? Who knows... I do know this... 3 weeks or 10 years out of the Police Academy and do something like this you better have a damn good explaination! You can be real good with a pen and paper but when you have Video.. HMMMMMMM After taking a close look at the video I would have to agree with INIT915!

As mentioned Empire's history has been um "turbulent" Most commercial ambulance services hit bumps in the road from time to time. I also hear Empire State Ambulance has another new management team. I would also like to hear WHO they are? Let's give them a fair chance before we bash them! Maybe things can get turned around? I can say this from experience... I have worked with the ESA Paramedics several times, I call 911 and they show up. "turbulent" company or not the employees have always been PROFESSIONAL! Correct me if I am wrong? I don't think Patient Care has ever been compromised during the up's and down's GOOD LUCK TO HUDSON VALLEY PARAMEDICS!

Cell Phone Skip, YES! Back in 2002 I was driving up Route 100 between Yorktown and Somers. (Westchester County) I came up on a Car Accident, I used my cell phone to Dial 911 and report the Accident. I began to give my location at which time a very puzzled 911 Dispatcher said "where is that" I stated in Somers, just past the Yorktown line. Dispatcher: "Sir, you have Suffolk County 911" I was like HUH?

I've been told that back in the 80's it was not uncommon for California Fire radio traffic to be heard loud and clear over Putnam. Sometimes Putnam "40-Control" could actually talk with CA. Can anyone confirm this? The skip you can pick up on Low Band is impressive. I've also been able to pick up several PD's in NJ, CT, MA, and RI on some local Westchester PD frequencies. I guess on a clear night anything is possible. HEY.... Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Dutchess DISPATCHERS what have you heard? INTERESTING STUFF!

Volunteer Duty to Act? GOOD POST! IMO, If you are at the Station and a call comes in Fire or EMS and you are "Fit for Duty" you should respond. NYS Law, DOH, Town/City/Village Rules or Laws, Department SOP, Department SOP it's just THE RIGHT THING TO DO!!! I say "Fit for Duty" because we all know some Fire Stations do have Bars/Alcohol and with all due respect we should just leave it at that. No one wants an intoxicated MOS on a call! If a Chief, Assistant Chief, Captain, or Lieutenant has to question you why you didn't respond to a call while you were at the Station on call, on duty, or just hanging out you should NOT be in Emergency Services. "Sorry Chief, I know it was a working fire with people trapped but the Yankees were winning" is NOT a good answer same would apply to "I was washing my car" We are all about HELPING our Neighbor No? TRUE STORY: I was ON DUTY Volunteering at a VAC. I was the EMT on the 12 AM to 6 AM shift with another EMT and Driver. We had a Full Crew. I was the only one actually on the schedule, the other two guys were "hanging out" sleeping at the Station. At 5:50 AM a call came in, both guys suddenly got up, walked out the door and went home. It really pissed me off because they both denied knowing we had a call. I was like "Dude, where the hell are you going we have a call" answer "We do?, Oh.. I am going home" Now cue in the Paging System going BEEP, BEEP, BEEP!!!!!! I was not very happy, most of you who know me know I am far from perfect but I always try and do THE RIGHT THING that was clearly NOT the right thing to do. Is it even legal??? Just because YOU may not be getting paid as a Volunteer Firefighter or Volunteer EMT does not mean you should not be PROFESSIONAL! Now, the Captain actually DEFENDED both members saying they were NOT on the roster and not actually on duty. HMMM Let's see here. You are in the Station and Sleeping but 10 MINUTES before the shift ends a call comes in and you are suddenly NOT on the roster or on duty and go home? Now that is TOTAL BS! Agree? BE SAFE!

It's been over a year since this thread was started. Thank you to all who gave input on this. Recently I was speaking to Remember585 about EMS issues, Over a year has passed and NOTHING has changed! The tones still sound and sound and sound. We "Roll the Dice" on who and when an Ambulance will respond. Sometimes an EMS call will go from one VAC to Mutual Aid VAC X 2, 3, 4, and yes every now and then a 5th M/A EMS agency. 15, 25, 35 + minues to be transported to the ER! Would this be acceptable if YOU were the 911 caller and Mom or Dad was having a Heart Attack? Do YOU think having a Volunteer EMT Fly Car that could be staffed by local VAC's to help cover calls is a good idea? (I say this only because most VAC's can get a Driver) In other words sharing of VAC EMT's to cover this Fly Car If every VAC kicked in some $$$ it can and would help cover calls in your area. I realize (as mentioned) having a Commercial Ambulance staffed with EMT's might be the BEST option to guarantee coverage, I do however feel strongly an EMT Fly Car could work. Do you think it's worth a shot? THOUGHTS?

Sorry Sir, I don't show "f***ing Fire Department" in my CAD, Please stay on the line while I transfer you! lol

Some EMS agencies you might want to call about Employment: - TransCare - Westchester EMS - Empress - Empire State Ambulance - Mobile Life Support - Regional EMS / Rockland Paramedics - Alamo - Northern Dutchess Paramedics Most of them do have websites that you can check out. You can print or fill out an application online. As mentioned usually you will need some EMT experience before you can work in a 911 system but not always the case. GOOD LUCK!
-
JHK3605, As JBE mentioned... You are correct, the 1973 Ward LaFrance was not the "Original" Engine used on the show. The original Engine is a 1965 Crown Fire Coach. (Photo Below) It's located at the LA Fire Museum. Engine 51, the 1973 Ward LaFrance made it's first appearance in the second episode of the third season called "The Old Engine" Some more information on Engine 51 at Yosemite http://www.emergencyfans.com/things/engine...e51yosemite.htm

When are you most likely to have a Heart Attack? Not surprised, usually when you get the calls for Chest Pains, SOB, Cardiac Arrest, and a family member finding someone DOA. That is why I never go to sleep!

GOOD LUCK TO MOHEGAN VAC WITH THE NEW 69-B2!!!! Just curious why the switch from Wheeled Coach to Lifeline ambulances? Any issues? http://www.lifelineambulance.com/
