Correct Career and Volunteer currently get differant gear. I think Rich C's point was that if the Vols. switched to Morning Pride overnight it would be to expensive. The Career FF got the gear over a 4 year period. Other then that it would be up to the companies to spec Morning Pride if that is the gear that they want( that is how we the career got it.)

Isn't that sort of what I.S.O. ratings do/are. I understand they are designed for insurance company to rate a department but it is a rating none the less is it not ? Question on the whole NFPA standards. What recourse do youthink there is when the standards are not met? Of course after the fact it allows for a great law suit I am wondering how to us it to try and get changes made before there is even a reason for a law suit.

Not that I really feel the need to defend my actions or posts I do feel a need to respond. If you were offended by my post so be it. There are certainly far worse things that I could say about the City of Rye Fire Department that I chose not to say just like I am not airing all the dirty laundry in this post. If you think I just hap hazardly posted you are incorrect. I had penned two or three replies that a choose to delete before even hitting the the post button because I felt they would be too harsh and cause problems. As far as my sarcasim or attitude it comes from 18 years of being with the City of Rye Fire Department, 11 Years as a volunteer and so far 7 as a career firefighter. People will proably say oh he got paid guy attitude but you are wrong I am fighting for the same things toady as I was when I was Captain of the Poningoe Engine and Hose Co. I have nothing to hide and do not think that any public fire department should be able to hide either. If there is something wrong we should all be fighting to fix it. I can only hope someone with authority reads my post and takes notice and it helps my department or some other department. Anyways I will stop my rant here Have a great day all

How does New York compare to other states? I do not know if that matters but it might be a good comparision. Just a thought.

What are you talking about? All I did was answer a question. You may not like the tone I used to do this but oh well. As for broad sweeping statements without any suggestions try this on for size. If the job is not getting done hire more men.

Engine 194 = P.O.S.(1981 Hahn) The powers that be in their infinate wisdom have decided that Rye with it's 6 square miles needs 2 spare engines and one spare ladder. 194 is now the former 193. 193 is now the former 192 As for the placment of equipment I believe it is still somewhat up in the air. The response will remain the same 2 engines and a ladder on all structure type calls. THERE IS NO MANPOWER TO MAN MORE EQUIPMENT THEN THAT (and even that is questionable)

There appear to be numerous examples of Chief Officers and Officers not wearing thier complete PPE. What do you think about this in general are the Chiefs setting bed examples for everyone. Are there any other examples that your the Chiefs Officers set or should set, good or bad.

Please tell me that I am mis reading #3 "Its not about you, its about the people we serve." While scene safety does protect those who are already involved isn't it really about protecting us. If I am working a job on say I 95 I really could care less about the people stuck in traffic. My first concern is make it safe(as safe as I can). It is too bad that people will be delayed but I did not cause the accident and I would really like to go home to my famliy at the end of the tour.

I understand you wanting to head something off before the pass but maybe you could wait and see were things go first. There is a bit of history with career, volunteer, and the Purchase fd. This might be a topic were some " career vs vollie debate" is in order. Debate is not a bad thing.

oh brother please I think you have your morons confused

Just wondering it seems like some of the functions would require two people to operate. I was under the impression the old copter was a one man show are there plans to add a second person in the copter?

2006 10 E Very interesting this could make things interesting in some combi departments. The career staff's could be a large voting block in some departments. Maybe the career firefighters within these departments will gain some say and help move things forward.

L 26 now belongs to public works who will sell it off. They are going to try trade mags to sell it before using a auction to get rid of it. Also 192 is getting inspected this week not delivered.

Rich I was well aware of the gripes when I accepted the postion, as I was a volunteer in the same dept. that I am now employed with. Anyone that knows me knows that I had the same attitude as a volunteer as I do today as a career firefighter. As far as the volunteers vanishing I did not think they would vanish. Volunteers are part of the history of this country and hopefully they will continue to thrive. With that said we do have to admit that the numbers of volunteers has decreased and that is a issue that needs to be addressed. If recuirtment and retention programs are not working do we not at least need to discuss other options. I am not looking to hi jack my own thread so I think this will be my last reply Thanks for everyones input PS I have emailed the chief of the offending dept. and as of yet had no reply if by some chance he should reply I will update Thanks again all

To single out Career firefighters in combo department as being anti volunteer does not seem appropriate. I will go alone with there being more Career Volunteer problems in combo departments. My feeling is that in a combo dept. both sides feel they have somthing to protect. The volunteers feels they most preserve the whole volunteer way and the career guys get in the way because all they want is to take over, and turn the dept. into a career dept. On the other side the career guys tend to think they are the bastard child and they most fight to protect themselves at all cost. There is obvisously much more to the issue and it is in no way a simple explaination to why the problems exist. I am listing below a list of gripes that some career firefighters might have against volunteers since this is the side I am involved in currently(although I do have volunteer experience). I do not mean any of the following comments to fact or indisputable they are just gripes true or untrue. Training level (volunteers are not trained to the same level) Accountiblity ( volunteers are not accountable for their actions) Members of Career Dept. volunteering in combo dept.( they are taking a job away from someone else, and are disrepecting their brothers) Career Firefighters must take orders from officers with less training I am sure other people could list more and I could too if I wanted to spend the time thinking about it. The list seem to be the most prevalent gripes. I am not trying to start a war, I am just trying to have a truthfull discussion. I would be interested in what volunteers from combination departments have to say.
