  2. Congratulations and good luck !!!
  3. When was it established that a blue light was no longer a courtesy light?
  4. We purchased our own portables and use our assigned channel 1 on the fireground. I have instructed our officers and drivers to switch to the high band after they call 10-17 on 46.26.
  5. Very catchy.....I like it
  6. Here we go again...
  7. Where you could get into trouble in recieving benefits is where you see on the back of the rig there usully a plate that warns you about being on the back step while the vehicle is in motion. It is unsafe...period. Now to address " we did it for years"... yes that is absolutely true. I rode the back fo for years in the early 80's untill it was realized it was unsafe and closed cabs were being produced. I could remember riding in the hosebed. Was it safe? We only wore scott paks if we really had to? Use them at car fires? Nah!! Now it is standard to use them all the time. We went from boots to bunker pants. Another hard sell...myself included. We never used safety or accountability officers. Laws say you have to now. We spend time and money on training our people to be safe at fires and other incidents yet put the very same people at risk at parades. I don't get it. Physicals, fit testing, TB testing, Hep shots, bloodborne training, survival training, FF1, FF2, NIMS, Nomex hoods. Remember the days of washing down gas from an auto leak? Do that now and see what happens. Change has been painful for some, again myself included but you know what change usualy has safety in mind. No FD is perfect but most do strive to meet the standards and do what is right. Parades are meant to be fun, a show of pride and also an event for the public to enjoy. Trophies are nice but when you start jeapordizing safety for the sake of winning one you're asking for it.
  8. Although I am not a big soccer fan, I would not consider it a boring game in the least. My son played for 7 years untill he began to play football and I could remember some pretty exctitng soccer games he played in. I would of hated to been the reciepent of that headbutt....what a noggin
  9. The article proved once again you never stop learning in this business. I did not know that sirens and lights would actually "upset" the bees. Interesting concept and good to know if you are asked nex time by PD if they ask you to respond quiet. As always...protect yourself and take advantage of the training that will show you how.
  10. You did the right thing...patient comes first...period !!!
  11. Very good point. As a chief I will never allow anyone to ride the back step or hose bed. Those days are long gone as far as I am concerned.
  12. Cam, I agree with about 99% of what you stated. Taking equipment, taxpayer funded no less far out of one's district is not a good idea and I have always maintained this belief for the 26 years I have been in the volunteer fire service. Fire trucks are meant to work and are not show pieces. I do not see a problem however with taking in local parades where the rig can still be in service and be able to respond quickly. Parades are supposed to be a show of pride, a chance for the public to see thier FD and also an exciting event for kids but they have gotten out of hand over the years. Just my humble opinion.
  13. Was in a fire once in a house that fits this description...during salvage I came accross bundles of newspapers with headlines highlighting Nixon and Watergate. The papers were stacked in date order in boxes. It is a problem and more so dangerous to us.
  14. I am curios to know what happens when the person who owns an affordable unit decides to sell? Does it get sold for a profit which usually is the case when you buy and sell real estate or is there a cap on the price?
  15. Actually the worst time is after the parade is over and you have an abundance of apparatus leaving lights and sirens usually around 10:00 or later. I feel it is annoying and unsafe.
  16. $63,309??? Those guys should top out at at least 75,000 in my opinion for what they do.
  17. Not that I want to impede on the topic of Yonker's rigs but I felt I had to respond to this. We have depts here in the US that fall in the same category. They get no financial backing from thier governing agencies simply because there is no money so they too rely on donated equipment. I am sure there are still depts left devistated by Katrina that could use equipment. Let's take care of America first.
  18. To my understanding the police can only dispaly the blue in the rear. Anyone please correct me if I am wrong. As to what may happen to volunteers and blue lights? Who knows. I will say this however...we have more important issues on the table than blue lights.
  19. I could not agree more. I will miss his articles. Very informative and inspiring. As far as my vote on magazines.... Fire Engineering Firehouse Firechief
  20. Another example on how things can go wrong in an instant. Heaven's ranks have swelled once again. May he rest in peace.
  21. On the contrary the Mets are showing signs of a champion team. On the other hand you can not ignore history and the 26 world champions. Yankee Fan...
  22. Bad practice and also violates NFPA standards
