I was involved in the planning process as a chief officer when Hope Depot was being planned and built. We made sure all supression and exhuast systems were going to be in place and also conform to town building codes and plenty if hydrants and easy access for the rigs. I have been on leave for quite some time from the FD ( returning 5/1/01) but I do know the dept did a couple of walk throughs, pre-planning, etc. When it was being built myself and another officer went there and took pictures of the interior so our members know exactly what the building is made of. Like any other box store it poses some dangers but I consider it a cream puff compared to some of the other buildings we have reponded to and have had fires in. And FYI, the jail and most of the reservation belongs to Valhalla. We cover Taylor Care and also the Pshyche Hospital. Good topic not just for Home Depot but for any other high hazard building. I was there last night also...must of just missed you....the store has become my new hangout

Let me just say I didnt have the hood on once ( and I mean just once) and paid a small price. Ceiling collapseed on me...no hood, collar not closed and snapped...why?? was in a rush to get in with my crew...burning embers down the back of my neck.... you figure the rest. Wear your PPE.

I am republican yet I can not seem to support Mr. Guliani at this point. And it has nothing to do with his personal life ( ex-wife) as most politicians do have something in thier closet. What matters is how will they work for us. If you remember during the Billary ( ALS got me laughing on this one) impeachment hearings during a break a senator said that people have to realize that politicians were never supposed to be angels and where was it ever written that they had to be. Our govt is not perfect but i agree with Capt we can agree to disagree an we have those who are shedding blood in Iraq and elsewhere to thank for that.

Years ago we responded to a basement fire in which a woman was killed. She fell asleep smoking in her chair and died not before alerting her landlord to get them out upstairs. Her death was actually caused by a fall trying to save her cat. She had seriuos trauma among her burns. It was also found the basement apartment was not legal...not permit was ever filed..no C/O issued. If one of our guys was hurt do you think this would be a legitimate suit? Something to ponder.

We put crews in the house untill the roads are clear. We keep in touch with the highway department and get updates on the roads.

We don't do enough...I am open for suggestions.

Brother I feel your frustration and understand totally what you are saying. The IAFF, NVFC, etc will support who they think will support thier interests. Most career ff's I know wouldnt vote for her even if she ran unnoposed but as far as the organizations it's all politics so my friend I suggest we all just get used to the rhetoric, smoke blowong, and down right lies that will encompass us until November 2008. Also, democrats usually are more labor friendly than republicans in her case she is also using Guliani' issues with the FDNY as ammuntion. She is very smart and witty. How else could someone from a state that had a larger unemployment average than the U.S. get elected in a state where she never paid a dime of taxes to. She sole a bill of goods and people bought it. What is sad is nither party has yet to produce any viable person as of yet. This election could be the beginning of the end. Watch the stock market in months to come.

I preach when I teach EVOC that even if you have a green light it is best if you slow down as you approach the intersection. Again, the "due regard" clause in the V+ T law carries alot of weight. Something to ponder...NYS V+T law states you can pass a red signal/stop sign after you have slowed down. NFPA says you should come to a complete stop. With the understanding NFPA carries no regulatory nature ( unless adopted by AHD) which do you thing will carry more weight in court?

Like anything else with volunteer depts in NY, it is a home rule issue. Whatever duties your AHD wants to write for that position is up to them as long as they are trained for the duties they are to perform. Dispatching, paperwork, record keeping, inventoryare some of the suggestion I have for that position. You can also have them assist with doing pre-planning. Let them go to various buildings in your response area and gatehr info on the building that would be useful in a preplan. Maybe going door to door asking homeowners if they are in need of smoke detectors. THere is plenty for them to do I feel and it also frees up the officers to tend to other duties like training. Hope this helps. It takes the burden away from the officers and frees them up for more fire related issues like training.

Coached baseball for many years, I like to go to the gym, watching football, boxing, watching my son in his sports, music, read, projects around my house and I love to travel which I intend to do more when I retire.

A recent post metioned Chris Hansen and the show that was done to catch these perps. Remember many of the occupations some of them had....homeland security cop, rabbi, navy petty officer, army sergeant, teacher to name a few. There were cases here in Westchester years back involving public serveants and young kids. What is frightening is over a period of 2 nights of the show in San Diego 55 "men" were arrested. Thats 55 in one city in 2 nights. Imagine nationwide what the stats are and these were those who were caught. I am a parent of a 14 year old and just want to say watch your kids and thier activity on the computer.

I have to agree with this statement and if I am not mistaken NFPA has standards that list the necessary lights and sirens needed and where they should be placed. Otherwise all you have is a very expensive buff-mobile.
-
Uh oh....doesn't smell too good.

Als...you know the deal...bands are expensive...parades come first you know

This is correct. In my dept you sign a waiver if you refuse the shot.

Lad41der, You answered your own question. We do need more background checks. Criminal, work history credit, etc. I am in total favor of that. It is great we check for arson convictions but arson is not the only crime in the NYS penal law. I have seen many degenerate, low life skells come in and as quiclky as they come they go but not before something happens. I am not familiar with the death you are talking about so I can't comment on it however I will say crashes are one of leading caused of death and injuries and it needs to be addressed As an EVOC instructor I can only say slow down, obey all traffic rules, the blue light ( on personal vehicle) is only a courtesy light, red lights and sirens do not expempt one from driving with due regard...you are responsible for yourself, your crew, and the public.

I joined my first dept in 1980 as a junior. I was led in by my neighbor. I was a typical young kid going nowhere with an attitude which was soon to be adjusted. I got into helping people and also the excitement and rush and learning new things was appealing. Never scored high enough on the written exams to go full time but I did land a nice part time gig as an instructor in which I dedicated alot of time taking classes to become one, many just to pick up techniques of other instructors.

With no disrespect to the dead....there have been several line of duty firefighter duty deaths this past week along with the never ending deaths of our troops in the war. I don't see any lenghty coverage over any of them and they died protecting others....
