  2. If it is betewwn 7-9 or 2-4 I am thinking about school buses and kids... My rate of speed... On coming intersections... Hydants... Other drivers who don't pay attention... Good topic...
  3. I think it is a bad idea. I am curious as to what both the police and fire unions think of this. I know in some communities there are public saftey officers who dual as firefighters and police officers.
  4. Everybody Loves Raymond All in the family The Honeymooners And cant leave out the Little Rascals...love the firetruck ride scene
  5. The answer is simple...you hire people if your volunteers can't do it. We contracted out for full time ems and it has been working out very well. Those hired are very good, decent people and have been welcomed as far as I can see. I believe people are willing to pay for service if it is needed.
  6. Gone but never forgotten
  7. I have taught numerous incident command classes....some when it was called Incident Command and now I-200 and in many cases some of the feedback I would get from some students is no matter how much of this is taught it will never work here in the Northeast which is a concept I disagree with. Anything will work if you put your mind to it and more improtantly practice. When was the last time any dept or depts did a simple incident command drill? Or when you do do you involve the police? EMS? DPW? Other agencies? If you paid attention in class you would remember at large scale incidents ( and in some cases small scale) there will be many other agencies involved. Comes down to training like anything else.
  8. Party, I dont think the noise has faded in fact courtesy of those depts new laws have been enacted to monitor and regulate how fire districts spend money. And newly elected commissioenrs have to take certain classes. Shameful it took some foolish spending that made us all look bad but I think in thier case it is the beginnng of the end when it comes to all those perks
  9. Got my overtime today.....good day to sleep in and relax tomorrow To all those who have to respond to anything be safe and watch the overhead wires, branches...etc
  10. I agree. He is worth 12 million a year...who's feeling sorry for who???
  11. May he rest in peace.
  12. This is what is the biggest problem I have in the volunteer fire service...it is 2007 and we still elect our leadership which in most cases are short lived. I ask you this....look back and see how many of those elected were truly capable of doing the job. I have seen myself those incapable yet elected due to either popularity, too easy, nice guy or gal, was owed, had to do it...etc. I feel there should be a testing process for volunteers at each level...model it off NFPA's standards for LT up to Chief, add to this experience, committment to training, and dedication to the department and not just to who makes the most parades, etc.
  13. VACGUY....I would be extremely careful on your accusations. You are making serious accusations against another organization. You seem to "claim" to know what is going on in Hawthorne and I see you are from Valhalla and are an officer in volunteer ems which you should know better not to make claims unless you have facts and are willing to stand by them. I was part of the past "regime" and I find it offensive that you bash my organization as you had in your last two posts. I am 99% sure of who you are and like another issue recently I will find out for sure. If you choose to be part of a small grouo of cowards who still are intent on bringing our house down don't do it in this forum....come to Hawthorne FD and tell us in person what you think of us.
  14. The very same reason I believe it didn't happen anywhere else..including Greenburgh....no one wants to give up thier house. Larchmont and the Town of Mamaroneck is now seeking to merge and add a paid chief.
  15. Oneeye, I can not nor will I speak for my board. If you want answers than I suggest you contact the fire district board and ask them directly. We all can go back and forth in this forum but I believe in taking questions to those who are responsible for making the decisions.
  16. Your friend is correct in fact the paid emt began yesterday at 06:00 and we will have one on duty from 6a 6p Mon to Fri. I am not sure how it will effect our budget being we can not bill but I imagine future tax increases like anywhere else. As far as us being on our way to fulltime ems only time will tell. Nothing has changed to my knowledge as we are still in the mutual aid plan we just have our rig staffed now with a paid emt. Now......and this is my opinion and mine only we have to give this a chance to see if this works. I see some postings about who was chosen to be contracted to....the board chose Empress, it was their decision and we hopefully addressed a problem. Wether the emt came from Empress or Disneyland we have someone...period. Let us worry about operation issues or who we go to if there is a problem.
  17. IMHO the Delmar book is a better tool.
  18. We respond to the firehouse. Only officers who do not are the chiefs and they are issued dept vehicles. I do not think an insurance company would like the idea of responding in your pov with lights and sirens.
  19. As a ladder driver and based on only what I see in this picture I would say too aggressive. I prefer to keep the truck on the pavement.
  20. Just attach a keg and....oh boy!!!
  21. To think my parents lived in Mulford Gardens cause it was a step up from where they lived in the Bronx. They moved out of there in 1963 right after I was born.
  22. One would think after what happened in upstate NY where a chief did time in jail for his role in the death of a probie in an acquired structure that every law and standard would be followed yet they are not. I believe it has to do with the belief that NFPA standards are not a factor in our business because they are not regulatory yet at times what is overlooked is NFPA is a leading standard that is referenced to in court and blatant violation of the standard will bite you in the end. I also feel complacency is a factor. So is pressure to make things realistic. All I can say is follow the law, follow the standards and if something goes wrong at least you covered your tracks. Baltimore probably is a well trained department. So is Pheonix Az and they had a live fire accident where the members were allowed to participate wearing only partial PPE.
  23. All citizens? I agree but it should also include people like me will retire in a few years...late 40's and willing to serve. How about lifting the maximum age ???
  24. I was taught if you are not 10 minutes early....you are late. This was from a highly respected member of my former fire department.
