  1. Don't label all cops for what was seen on here. This cop obviously had is priorities wrong and made a jerk of himself.
  2. I don't it is that they don't care. The average person will never need the FD so it is not a priority. Usually the topic of conservations at a barbecue or other gathering is college, taxes, work, sports, what the next project on the house is, etc and not the fire department.
  3. Stick with basics. VES, mask confidence, self rescue, hydrant hookups, etc at a minimum.
  4. I could not agree with this any more. In my years I have seen some commissioners who got so complacent that they felt the job was owed to them or they were untouchable. And what was worse some were so power hungry they thought they were chief's. But regardless how bad or good one is two five year terms is enough. Give someone else a chance to drive.
  5. I totally agree with getting rid of bad apples and there were a few in my day I wish I could of simply dumped but as a former chief who had similiar issue come across my desk I can tell from experience that it is not that simple today to get rid of someone especially if they have not been convicted. There are laws in place for conducting department hearings which must follow due process.
  6. This is so true. I also found profound disrespect for senior members as well as authority. I have seen those who are new talk the talk yet they can't crawl yet but those shiny FDNY stickers on thier helmets or the " I fight what you fear" shirts has made them instant experts. Those who haven't finished FF1 yet but are "expert" enough to criticize a decision a chief made ( behind his back of course). Once again and not to sound repetitive but new members have three purposes.. 1. Learn. You know nothing yet. 2. Keep your mouth shut. No one cares about your opinions. You know nothing yet. 3. Do as you are told. You know nothing yet. If this offends anyone...oh well.
  7. May he rest in peace.
  8. Why two stations? Wouldn't it be more effective to have the engine and truck in one house? Just asking.
  9. Rest in peace. My thoughts and prayers go to the family and the Mt. Vernon Police Dept.
  10. Like any other quarterback...he is only as good as his team mates.
  11. One would hope a baby or young kid would not be in a positon where they would end up in a pool like that but I think it is great that skills like that can be digested at such a young age.
  12. What is so "unique" about doing the robot to the pass alsrm?
  13. Hearing this really makes my blood boil. There always seems to be money for parades, parties, dinners, etc but to allow people to advance in thier skills and perhaps make a better department money seems to be an issue.
  14. Stupid can't be taught but this video shows how stupid is contageous.
  15. When an officer has to put on turnout gear how is the officer's weapon, stun gun, pepper spray and any other form of defense that is carried secured?
  16. Mansavers are not fool proof.
  17. It is not that easy today to remove someone. They have the right to due process like anyone else. He has not been found guilty of anything yet. As much as someone like this should be dumped he does have rights. My guess is he will have his day and will spend some time eating bolagna sandwiches and protecting his lower backside.
  18. I used to love Wide World of Sports on Saturday afternoon. How about Monday night football with Howard Cosell?? Making popcorn in the pot. Phil Risuto on channel 11 with the Yankees. I was either playing basketball, baseball, football, riding my bike or anything outdoors...play station and Myspace was unheard of. Sundays were sacred. Wouldn't dare go to a friends house. Dinner at 2pm. Football games on all day. Grandparents had to watch Lawerence Welk at night. Video cameras were attached to the VHS. The Frazier-Ali fight. How about Ed ( Too Tall) Jones debut as a boxer?? Should of stayed with the Cowboys. How about Raquel Welch, Angie Dickinson, the Lander twins and Farrah Fawcett??? Who remembers the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue of the Beauties of Brazil?? The fire service... Open cabs Back step riding.....lots of fun in the winter when it was 10 degrees outside. Long boots and coats 60-control dispatchers were volunteers Rubber gloves Those big Plectron boxes we were issued Essentials was taught in firehouses The fire training center had only the burn building, tower, oil pits and propane shed. No incident command, accountability, nomex hoods, pass alarms. Never wore a mask unless you really needed it. Most importantly...you respected your senior brothers, learned and kept your mouth shut. You proved yourself by your actions and not with the amount of FDNY sitckers on your helmet or the brightest blue light on your car. Those were the days...
  19. Very good point. When I was a chief I responded to the station first to see if the rigs needed to get out. There were plenty of times I ended up driving either the big rigs or the ambulance or also being the emt. There were arguments that I was supposed to go to the scene and play boss but what good is playing boss when there are no rigs there to get the job done? A white hat and portable will not put a fire out.
  20. Perhaps for one dept it would be expensive. But what if you merged several small depts? Would it be much of a tax burden than? I dont want my taxes to go up any more than they have but lets face it....by hook or crook the rigs have to get out with people who know what they are doing..bottom line. We have to provide a service. If you can't do it with your volunteers than the only logical answer would be to hire. If you don't want to hire than merge and pool whatever manpower you have or like stated in another post start dual responses.
  21. First you need to find out why no one cares. What has happened in the last few years to establish that attitude. Next, look at your leadership. Are they the problem? Do they demand too much? In order to recruit you need to market your organization. You may need to spend some money on ads or other means of getting the word out there. But you have to fix what ever it is wrong with your organization. Also, hiring some emt's to fill in the voids is not a bad idea and may help you. Become creative with ideas, regardless what others think. You need too stand for what you think is right even if you stand alone. Don't be initimitated by those who will try to knock any attempt to bring your place up. Good luck !!
