Does this surprise anyone???

I dont remember my first CPR call but the one that will haunt me forever was doing it on my own grandmother who on her 76th birthday just finished blowing out her candles when she slumped back on her chair and went out. Despite my efforts as well as the ems crew ( Abbey Richmond at the time) she passed away. Anyone else ever have to try and revive a relative?

In reading some of the blogs addressing his comments I can understand both points of view and you have to ask when is enough enough when it comes to safety? When I was a chief my #1 concern was that those I was sending in came out and went home to thier families. It can be difficult to make decisions that may affect other people's lives. While I certainly respect and admire Lt. McCormacks experience and opinion I feel leaders do owe it to those under thier command that they operate safely. As far as it being a priveledge to be a part of the fire service? Absolutely. I have been volunteering for almost 29 years and always felt priveledged to be able to serve my department and community. I also felt it was a priveledge to serve as an officer. It was a challenge that I accepted and glad I did as I served with some very good people, some still in leadership positions today.

Tragic. May they rest in peace.

Rather than assume why not pick up the phone and ask the chief?

Isn't there a nursing shortage? Do we want them answering phones or taking care of patients...

I believe NFPA 1001 spells out the tasks that have to be preformed.

In a fire department ( volunteer) where you have a fire company ( or companies) and you have a fire district is it considered a conflict of interest when a fire commissioner is also a fire company officer such as president or vice president? Just curious on what the thoughts are.
-
I don't see why this would be a conflict if the volunteer was just a firefighter or emt. I question in a situation where you have decision making authority such as a company president or vice president that it may be a conflict when you have to make decisions as a commissioner.

http://cms.firehouse.com/content/article/a...=63425§ionId=46 Interesting article. Seems like some quoted in this article want to cut training. Not the answer in my opinion.

Well said Chris.

I see several Westchester departments are being proactive on securing grants. Congratulations !!!

I couldn't agree with this more but in my experiences as a chief commisioners ( not all) have failed to support the chiefs when it came to discipline of members. They were afraid of being sued or concerned of popular opinion. I could remember a time when you joined and were told to keep your mouth shut and learn. There was more pride then.

I was an "I" for a few years. Couldn't do much other than sticks under supervision of a medic. Only tubes done were in the OR during rotations. When I worked per-diem ems I was paid as a basic.

I second that !!!!
